Woodturning Black Walnut Dish With Curved Tanoak Accents

  • I made this small 6" diameter dish out of Black Walnut & Tanoak for the accent lines. The main piece of Black Walnut is the cut-off from the last bowl I made that had the Black Walnut accent lines with the Silver Maple. The Tanoak veneers were only 1/16" thick, so I was able to use my shop iron with the steam on full to be able to bend it for the parabola shape. The absolute hardest part is getting the accent lines to line back up when gluing the next veneer in. I still have some learning to do to perfect this method, but I think that the biggest part is that the veneer thickness has to match the kerf cut of the bandsaw blade to make it all line back up together. I plan to do more work like this in the future, and I thank everyone of you for watching.

Thank you so much Mike! I plan on making a full set of dinner plates out of this same design in the near future.

Thank you Rick! I found it to be an essential part of finishing off the bottom in a more controlled way than using chisels and such to take off the tenon, or the bottom with a mortise. I made a complete video on how I made those Cole Jaws, you can see it here: th-cam.com/video/k1ScXVhvDIQ/w-d-xo.html

Great bowl mate. Glad to see that you remembered not to round it off until after gluing 🤣 I like that one had two slices in it and how the pattern was laid out too.
    Keep on turning.
    Cheers, Bluey 👍

Thank you very much my friend! Definitely remembered to leave it square this time for the glue up. It takes a little more planning this way, but a lot easier on the glue ups. I worked on the pattern in my head for a while before I drew it up in AutoCAD (which is what you see in the video). There are a lot of these kinds of designs floating around in my head that I will be making in the near future. Designing it in my head is one thing, but figuring out out to make it is a different story. Keep turning my friend! :)
