Why Enel's lightning strike didn't affect Upper Yard? Simple, one of the effects of the ground is to absorb and redistribute electrical discharges throughout an area. That's why the people of Skypea are surprised by how little impact Enel's strike had on Upper Yard, as they were expecting a destruction similar to what happened on Angel Island
And in one if the "Cover Stories" of the manga, one of the ones that sadly never got adapted to anime it shows that Cricket eventually reached Skypea and met with Wiper, thus reuniting the two separated generations of friends once more.
The deaths in One Piece are treated more like a "symbolic death" rather than simple stakes in a battle, if someone physically dies, it has to have symbolic meaning, at least this much is consistent in One Piece way of storytelling.

"Risk" Oda doesnt like the idea of killing off characters for "risk" or "fear". Oda made it clear in the past that a main characters death should MEAN something, there should be something very deeply gained from such an awful event. Oda has also said many times that a person losing their dreams is a fate worse than death in the world of One Piece. After beating the crap out of villains and ruining their plans, we find many are completely destroyed mentally and often dont know what to do with themselves. On top of this if characters die they can no longer impact the story moving forward, and Oda loves having his massive world constantly moving and changing. It's really funny when no one dies here 🤣 But yeah, I agree at Ron. If you're actually young when you started this, you'll just find joy at those who survived. But now that we already matured and were exposed to a lot of different story-telling, your view also changes.
You are right, oda’s only small* criticism is that he does not kill his characters (for now), but in my opinion that is just a small detail as these deaths would not impact the story at all, but when he chose to kill a character the impact on the story is big.
Oda takes inspiration from everywhere. For this arc some of them from Borneo and Indonesia, that's why we have Orang Utan. Those big wooden shields used by the Shandian look exactly those used by indigenous people in Borneo. Laki means male/boy/man in Malay and Indonesian languages. Kinda fitting because she's the only woman amongst Shandian warriors.

yeap he goes to the moon, and it's canon, it's a manga cover story that is not animated, which is a shame because Enel's story explains so many things and expands the "world" so much

I was a bit annoyed by it too in the beginning as some of the "death" scenes would have been more impactful had the characters stayed dead. But eventually accepted the fact that it's based on a shonen manga where characters are typically depicted more durable than the average human being. Enel is going to the moon, the anime never showed us this, but in the manga there is a cover story that shows Enel on the Moon and there he discovers that there was a civilization on the Moon
Early One Piece is very much focused on continueing the story than killing this or that character. It's not violent like recent anime and is supposed to attract an audience of all ages. It's more about the adventure with friends, Less about killing people for the sake of them doing bad shit. There is a good reason Oda doesn't like to kill off characters, untill he stops pulling punches.
