      Jimmy takes his hat off when he asks if John is working again. That shows he's not asking as an officer, but for himself. Obviously he's aware of what John has done for a living, but also knows John isn't a danger to anyone outside the underworld of crime. He has no intention to arrest John (which he realizes would be futile), but merely wants to be aware to stay out of any lines of fire and let John be. And John respects Jimmy, knowing he's just doing his job, and since he understands Jimmy is not going to impede him, bids him a good night.
      That scene is a masterpiece of mutual understanding and respect.

    There's a fun fact about this movie that people who actually speak Russian find hillarious. You see, Baba Yaga is not really a Boogieman. The part "baba" actually means "old lady". And Baba Yaga is a character from Slavic folklore. It's an ancient witch that lives deep into the forrest in a hut on chicken legs. However, there's another character in Russian and Slavic folklore who is called "Babayka". And Babayka is like this spirit, or some sort of spiritual entity. He comes for kids who misbehave and snatches them. The word comes from "babay" wich means "old man" in the Tatar language. The fact that this spirit has no description plays on the imagination of kids making him even more terrifying. That being said, I believe the creators of John WIck probably meant to make John a Babayka rather than Baba Yaga. But.. oh, well. We got what we got.
    By the way, the actors are not even trying to sound Russian. I mean if I had no subtitles I would barely get what they're saying. In addition they keep messing up the grammar. :D However it's quite typical for American movies. The only project where they speak Russian believably is the Daredevil tv series. (Another one could be "Nobody" but the actors who speak Russian are actually russians and the director of this movie is Russian himself).

    I'm glad you noticed how the gun lights gave away the assassins in John's house, most miss that
    Jimmy took his hat off and covered his bodycam with it after seeing the body in John's house (took me several viewings to notice that)
    All the gunshots on the dance floor were on beat with the song
    Viggo's death was slow and painful. John stabbed him behind the collarbone, most likely severing the right subclavian artery. That's a major trunk off the Aortic arch, bleeding from there will cause blood to pool in your chest so every time you exhale your lungs collapse a little more and can't refill with air, very painfully suffocating someone over the next few minutes

    Chad Stahelski, the director of _John Wick_ (and its sequels) was Keanu Reeves' stunt double in _The Matrix,_ as well as being one of those films stunt coordinators, so it's no surprise that the fight scenes take such a prominent focus of the film. It's also why - at least IMHO - there are so many fine details in the film which pay off for the observant viewer (like Vigo's death, which occurs because, given the angle and length of the blade of the knife, John severed his spinal column - the result of which is inevitably death)

    • @DoremiFasolatido1979
      @DoremiFasolatido1979 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For good reason. No matter how good you are, or how many precautions are taken, that shit is dangerous, and the wrong kind of injury could be a disaster. I'm all for letting actors do what they can, and I'm nothing but impressed by Keanu's abilities in that regard, but I probably would've limited him quite a bit too.
      I'd rather fudge some scenes a little...than risk his well-being for it. If I were a stuntman, and Keanu (probably inevitably) said he wanted to do the stunts himself because he's uncomfortable risking someone else's safety to preserve his own, my response would be, "Don't worry about it, Mr. Reeves. It's my job to protect you, just as it would be for any bodyguard. I do it because it's what I want to do, what I choose to do, and thankfully I'm good at it. It's alright. I got this."

  • @DoremiFasolatido1979
    @DoremiFasolatido1979 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Even if Marcus had been planning to kill John, he couldn't have taken that shot at the hotel. The Continental is essentially "neutral ground" and everyone on the property is protected. What matters is if the target is on the property, not whether the attacker is. So even though Marcus wasn't in the hotel, he still would've been breaking the rule.
    Ironically, that means the safest, cleanest, most comfortable hotels on the planet...are run by the criminal underworld. And because they're meant to operate as a legitimate front, they also allow normal people to stay there. So someone could actually take their wife and kids on a vacation, and unknowingly stay in a really great hotel filled with assassins and possibly worse...and be safer there than literally anywhere else on the entire planet.
    That whole notion is just awesome, and hilarious. And yet, when you really think about it, it makes so much sense. They'd NEED rules like that, or their whole web of organizations would just fall apart. It's really genius, honestly.

    During the last fight with Viggo, you commented about strategy and John getting stabbed.... Obviously it's dramatized, but the principle is controlling the weapon. John accepted the stab into his abdomen, but controlled it with both arms to ensure it wasn't fatal. His return attack to Viggo was to break his arm followed by a stab that more than likely severed the sub-Clavian artery/vein. It was the equivalent of taking a body shot to deliver the knockout punch.

    From what i understand the gold coins are a symbol of services earned. So the way you make it in that world is to help others enough to get the coins so you can live the way you want. There are also bigger coins signed with a bloody fingerprint. It is a debt not yet paid for (i.o.u.). Refusing to make good on that debt and a hit is placed on you.
    Lastly a prequel is something i would like too. Although when you know who is alive later on it takes the suspense out of it. Keanu could play his younger self cause we all know he is an immortal.

    For the shootout in the club scene, keep in mind that what we see on screen is quite different from what people inside such a club would see. It's considerably brighter to us because of cinematography constraints, and our perspective reduces what our brains have to process with all the flashing lights and music, and crowds of people. Actually being there in it, would be such chaos that almost everything would actually be consciously tuned out. That's part of why it's popular...it's a way of overloading the brain so it basically just ignores everything, and they get to be mindless for a while.
    On top of that...in such a club, nearly everyone on that floor would be on some kind of drugs, and or drunk.
    Now, they're not using suppressors on their guns, so firing one would still be loud as fuck, but it wouldn't really start a panic simply because nobody would understand WHY the loud cracks were happening. And anyone who saw Iosef running in the towel would probably just think someone was on one too many drugs down in the bathhouse. They probably didn't even see the black gun in his hand in such a dark room. But, after enough guys get dropped after a bunch of those loud cracks, people finally noticed and got the fuck out. Hence, the empty dance floor when John got tossed off the balcony/mezzanine.
    And then in the lounge area outside the dance floor, all that changes, and everyone reacts accordingly, right away.

    The car you referred to as a Camaro is actually a Chevelle.

    Incredible movie making and storytelling. But the one big flaw I see in this movie is if everybody knows who John Wick is, don't you think the son of the crime boss would certainly know who he is as well?

    As I start viewing your reaction, my prediction is that -- like most of us -- you'll be so caught up in the story that the violence not only will not bother you, you'll actually be cheering it on. But we'll see how well I know your tastes. ;).
    36:15 I think that's the first time I've ever heard you "snort-laugh" -- adorable. ;)

    Love your reactions as always.

    If you want two funny action movies, try Kung Fu Hustle or Shaolin Soccer with subtitles. Hustle is violent as it involves a gang trying to take over a poor community. Unbeknownst to them, the community has some martial arts masters trying to live a normal life. Soccer is about monks living away from the monastery who needs to raise money to save it. They decide to join a soccer tournament. There's a lot of wire work and CGI that's still entertaining.

    Wow! You nailed the plot in it's entirety in your intro. I wish there were more complexity for you, and i'm afraid the whole franchise is pretty much.. rinse and repeat.
    This is sad as Keanu Reeves is such a sympathetic character on-screen.
    I really liked him in
    POINT BREAK (1991)
    Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and
    THE REPLACEMENTS (2000)
    Keanu Reeves, Gene Hackman
    This was fun till it became redundant.
