Dang, I came here to see the review and forgot all about that when I was entranced by this guys riding skills. I think ANY bike he was riding was going to look great with this guys expertise.
That's just the thing... a great driver can make a Walmart bike look good and make you wish you had one. The real trick is to learn which bike and components are correct for YOU and your type of driving.
I had to watch it twice to pay attention to what you were saying in your comprehensive review. I was fixated by your riding skills. Jeez Louise, you can ride. Thanks for posting!
Mark Ceconi thank you! My goal was to make it entertaining if you aren't interested in the fork, and informative if you are. Bonus for some people to be entertained and informed! 👍
A similar thing happened with me, Mark. This is the second time I watched the video and Pat: I not only heard your comments, but was also impressed with how specifically you related them to the particulars of each move you were making. I must have been so fixated at your skills the first time I watched it, I didn't even remember there was any commentary! LoL. I was still slack-jawed this time watching!
This was amazing! I'm looking at this fork and I won't be doing even a small fraction of what you were, so I think it will hold up to me rolling over some pebbles.
thanks for taking the time to put this review together. Inspiring to see your skills and bike handing. I'm just about to get my first fat tire bike for winter (and shoulder season riding). It will be replacing my dirt bikes. Happy trails. PS: you should make some videos on basic trial riding techniques for those of us who want to build our skills.
Fatbikes are a blast year round, but a good fork does go a long way. I’ll have to put bicycle how to’s on the list for future videos. I have done a bunch for MotoTrials but they are tough!
Good info. I've tried a couple fat forks and often found the flex and quality of travel wanting when ridden with gusto. Looks like the Mastodon may be the step up.
Looking for a Mastadon review as I am looking to push it in the summer and I have mangled my Bluto...it is not up to the task of jumping and hard riding. This looks like it'll be more than enough for me cause man this guy shreds!
Holy skills man! I use to ride/race dirtbike, 3&4 wheelers, and snowmobiles when I was young but now at 45 I have fear. I can hardly let both tires of my Trek Farley 9.6 get off the ground haha. I'll be upgrading to this fork I think. Love what I'm seeing from it! Thanks for the review~!
Do you have any caveats or negs to say about this fork? Prefs? Comparisons? Your skill is obvious and I enjoyed the video immensely - you're obviously an extremely talented rider. I couldn't help wondering if this was a Manitou-sponsored video, however. Don't get me wrong - I was sold on Manitou a long long time ago. I just found it interesting there was not a single neg in your review. Again, loved seeing how you handle the spontaneous natural features and I was incredibly impressed with the trials style tech's you performed on a fatbike - never seen that before. Thanks for the video. My comments are just honest curiosities - I'm now a fan and inspired after seeing this.
EricSwanDahly the video was focused on its strengths, but I have not noticed many negatives. I guess one thing I had to get used to was the width of the crown. I brushed my knee on the adjuster a couple times when getting way over the front end and not thinking about it. I also like to have a full lockout sometimes for certain trials lines, but I have been surprised how well it handles them without being fully rigid. I really think it's just a great fork that worked well right away. Made my Skookum even more fun to ride!
Thanks! Yes I have tried all of them that I know of and put a good amount of time on each (aluminum and carbon rigid too) besides the RST since it does not look up to par with the others.
Super helpful feedback on the fork Pat! I am likely going to this when I pick up my fat bike. Just getting a read on the fit of the Skookum, what size frame are you riding and how tall are you? Thanks!
You got skills I’m sure you seen or had other forks to compare ,trying to gather information on an upgrade for my Salsa Beargrease fatty ..........wondering if you had experience on the WREN inverted fork and if so what are your thoughts? I Do find the Mastodon a worthy comparison
I just now subscribe. I'm a long time viewer though. I hate you and you're my hero all at the same time. I've got two full suspension fat bikes, one hardtail and a ridged fat bike. I make all my fat bikes watch your videos hoping they can learn those tricks. Nothing yet. You must be "the fat bike whisperer". Sorry, I don't really hate you. We need to see more FB trials!
leakslikasieve haha thanks! While it's hard to know for sure how it would work for your size, I think the manitou is easier to set up. I could make the wren stiff, but it would suffer on smaller hits. I'm loving how progressive and smooth this is. I would think it would be the same for you with more air in it.
leakslikasieve that is quite the pricey upgrade, but would completely change the bike for the better. You might be better off selling that and buying a bike speced with a mastodon though. Just another idea. I know fatback will have an option for them soon! 👍
Pat Smage I priced it out a bit more today. It would run about $1250 with a new hub and wheel laced, plus a Thompson elite dropper post. Not too bad actually. You can find the mastodon online a lot cheaper than the Wren.
Hi, Pat. I've seen some posts by Wren owners that mentioned uneven compression/rebound on occasion -- the front tire would tip out of "vertical." This would seem to possibly lead to a bit of instability. I guess that this could just be a characteristic of the inverted design, with no crown to hold the stanchions together. Did you notice this at all when you tried the Wren fork? Thanks for the review of the Mastodon -- sounds like a winner!
I mix it up. 26x4 is pretty common in the summer. I have ran that with 26x4.8 rear also for more rear cushion at times and go to 4.8 front and rear in the winter and sometimes summer.
What ...this vid was about fk'n forks...?....lol. Dude....you got serious skills and balance. It's always a pleasure to see somebody do what they were put on this earth to do best. :-)

Thomas Brooklyn awesome to hear, I appreciate it! I did my best to show and describe what I liked about the fork. 👍
Never seen riding like it … outstanding! was just looking for fat bike fork reviews.
Thanks! I highly recommend the manitou over the rest 👍
He made a fat bike ride like a BMX. SKILLS!
Lughnerson thanks! I used to race bmx, then to MotoTrials, now a bit of everything. It's all fun.
Great video! You should do more product reviews, Pat.
It's always a joy watching you ride :)
Pretty mad trials skills there Pat! That double hop up at 2:40 was mental!
This was amazing! I'm looking at this fork and I won't be doing even a small fraction of what you were, so I think it will hold up to me rolling over some pebbles.
Thanks! It is definitely beefy enough for some pretty harsh abuse! And has great feel over pebbles. Enjoy!

im speechless, i dont even care about the fork at this point lmao
Good info. I've tried a couple fat forks and often found the flex and quality of travel wanting when ridden with gusto. Looks like the Mastodon may be the step up.
JD Walker I was in the same boat, happy with the Manitou so far though!
Got me a new Farley 7 with these forks. To bad this bike will never see this kind of riding. Wish I could ride like this guy. It would be so much fun.
Looking for a Mastadon review as I am looking to push it in the summer and I have mangled my Bluto...it is not up to the task of jumping and hard riding. This looks like it'll be more than enough for me cause man this guy shreds!
Thanks! I am still running a Mastodon and loving it. I had some similar issues with the bluto and the Mastodon was the answer for me.
Holy skills man!

Man this dude has skills. Hope to look half as good on a bike as he does one day 😂
Wow! Your skills are very impressive! Ripping on a fat bike is not easy by any means.
Gotta say; cheers for this video & review. Relieved my wallet of some money - fully stoked with the Mastodon :)
I'm very impressed with your skills bro
Thanks!
Unbelievable riding skills. Impressive.
Thanks!
nice riding you have it dialed
I'm trying a 100 Pro out on a 2018 Ithaqua . . . but nothing is going to make ride anything like you do. Good stuff!!
Fatbike Republic thanks! It can only help haha.
Adrenalin ride . I want this fork . I'm 59. BMX championship 74-75 AZ . old as dirt
DAMN YOUR GOOD MAN!... Nothing short of championship excellence and quality of bad ass...

Great riding, I need to practice more than looking for new bike to get better.
It is all about practice and lots of repitition!
You are so right about repartition. But i am only not so fit 50+ guy. Still not giving up on riding and learning new things. Greetings from Finland
First, insane skills. Really impressed how that fatbike gets chucked around.
Second, what other forks did you try? Ever ride a Wren? Thx
Thanks! Yes I have tried all of them that I know of and put a good amount of time on each (aluminum and carbon rigid too) besides the RST since it does not look up to par with the others.
nice review... fun to watch... Thanks!
Super helpful feedback on the fork Pat! I am likely going to this when I pick up my fat bike. Just getting a read on the fit of the Skookum, what size frame are you riding and how tall are you? Thanks!
No problem. In 6’ and riding an 18”. The 20 works too but I like the lower seat tube on the 18.
This guy is a wizard on this bike!! Amazing!! So much funner then my little curb jumps 😂 however I did order this fork in the 2021 version. 😁
Thanks! Good choice!👍
Dude, you got mad skills! Great video!
Thank you!
Great Stunt, made it look so easy(of course he is a Pro). How i wish i ride like that...keep makin vids
Hey Pat, that is amazing footage. Was that fork an after market install?
Rob Bastien thanks! It was but now it is available with the bike when you buy the Fatback Skookum. 👍
Awesome riding and great review.
Thanks!
Where are those trails you were riding at 1:25?
Alpine Valley in Elkhorn, WI
You got skills I’m sure you seen or had other forks to compare ,trying to gather information on an upgrade for my Salsa Beargrease fatty ..........wondering if you had experience on the WREN inverted fork and if so what are your thoughts? I Do find the Mastodon a worthy comparison
I do. That was the fork I ran before switching to the Mastodon. I prefer the Mastodon as it suits my style better.
Pat Smage why the change ? Explain please
Great review with awesome skills to boot! Ride On Man :-)
Jens Jacobs thanks you too! 👍
Fat bike are awesome, I have a specialized fatboy, is it worth swapping the carbon rigid for a suspension fork?
Agreed. Yes suspension is a huge upgrade, especially the mastodon! Unless you always ride smooth trails and don’t need any that is.
@@PatSmage mastodon over the bluto?
@@Wheelsanstuff yes. Mastodon is far stiffer and more adjustable.
@@PatSmage awesome, I really appreciate it. Your riding is amazing.
Finally got mine after a long back order! Thank you!
Wow insane riding on the fatbike 🤟💯
Amazing skills! Wow
Great review and riding man!

Thank you! And funny way to put that. Sounds like you have a nice fleet of bikes! Keep practicing and have fun!
This guy is an amazing rider. wow
Thanks!
I want to go this way: Fatbike with a Mastodon though I wish I have your skills which is not the case right now😢 Men, you’re a Wizard 😮
What version of the mastodon are you using in your video (travel ? extended/normal ?).
Thanks for your answer.
Hubert Arnaud 120mm Ext Pro
Sick biking skills 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Which one is better Wren or this Manitou or something else?
The manitou is the best I have tried. 👍
Ok thx. Maybe i order one, all though winter is coming but that Manitou should work on cold climate as well.
You're a beast. I've been trying to decide between this and a wren. Thoughts? Mind you, I'm 245lbs.
leakslikasieve haha thanks! While it's hard to know for sure how it would work for your size, I think the manitou is easier to set up. I could make the wren stiff, but it would suffer on smaller hits. I'm loving how progressive and smooth this is. I would think it would be the same for you with more air in it.
Now I just need to decide if spending $1600 total (fork, hub/wheel build, dropper post) on my 2015 fatboy is worth it.
leakslikasieve that is quite the pricey upgrade, but would completely change the bike for the better. You might be better off selling that and buying a bike speced with a mastodon though. Just another idea. I know fatback will have an option for them soon! 👍

How much psi you run in this video?

Holy crap that was amazing
what is the weight this fatbike?
Silent322 I’m not sure, probably around 30.
Very good pilot!!!! 🤘🏻 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Pat how the hell do you ride so confident
Lots of practice! Learn it small and slow and try to take it bigger and faster.
Pat Smage well I added the MM to my Carbon Beargrease/ not that I expect to ride tree limbs like you but it is spectacular.
Marty Bee good to hear, enjoy the ride! 👍
Sweet moves Dude!
