Who here knows every word and are singing along.... most.
on our family's first Beatles album... Long Tall Sally... a uniquely Canadian release, with same cover photos as the US Second Album... both versions of this song are fantastic in their own way
It's been too long for me and my memories are fading, but I'm getting many words and humming the rest.
A blast from my childhood. Back then if you wanted to communicate with anyone out of town the phone was way too expensive so you had to write a letter.
I enjoy the music reations you post. I'm a 78 yr old white dude from Detroit who attended high school with the Marvelettes in Inkster, Michigan in 1960-1964. It was great to watch them achieve their dream and be signed by Motown to produce their hit songs.
AWESOME... TOO COOL. I thought this is a great comparison of this classic song. Both groups killed it. John was on FIRE. Thanks. 499
~ The Marvelettes recording was the first USA chart topping single for Motown ~
Here's the amazing story about the Marvelettes and "Please Mr. Postman." Lead singer Gladys Horton put the group together with Katherine Anderson, Juanita Cowart and Georgianna Dobbins to participate in their high school talent contest. The prize was an audition for Tamala Records (later to become Motown) for the first 3 places. The girls came in 4th place but the teacher who put on the show thought enough of their talent to pull strings and included them. Of the four acts, they were the only act chosen. After being told that having original material would be key to them getting a record deal, Georgianna wrote "Please Mr. Postman" overnight. Days later, they were in the studio, having never performed professionally before, with their new name, the Marvelettes. Everyone in the studio, from drummer Marvin Gaye on up knew it was going to be a smash and it hit #1 by November, 1961. The rest, as they say, is history!
I have always loved this song and both versions are absolutely great. Personally, I give the edge to the Beatles. But that's me.
Beatlemaniac here! ❤
Loved you doing a comparison, great idea! Great song, great reaction 😊
Glad you liked it.
@ how about Badfinger’s Without You and Harry Nilsson’s version ☺️
Dont forget the Vietnam war was raging at this time. Many girls were waiting on letters form their boy friends who were over there hoping they were still safe & alive.
People really used to look with excitement when the postal carrier delivered the mail. Also, when answering machines came out, we really looked forward to vm. Now, we groan in checking out our inbox,
Yes that’s Ringo’s sweeping high-hat playing. That’s a signature of his
The Beatles had a way of covering a song and making it their own ( the original is awesome)
That Marvellete version features Marvin Gaye -- yes, THAT Marvin Gaye! -- on drums. 😮
Love the Motown groups, early Beatles are my favorite. More comparisons!
Glad you like it, I'll request more.
My mother "Dotty" assembled four guitars for the Beatles in 1964 doing the "Special Orders" at Electro-Strings Rickenbacker Guitars. John's 325-6 string and his 325-12 string. George's 360-12 string and Paul's Left hand 4001 Bass. In 1973 I assembled two Fender Rhodes Electric Pianos for Apple Records and John Lennon sent to the Dakoda. Mom and I are the only Mother - Son who both assembled musical instruments for The Beatles. We are very proud of that.
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
I see the Marvelettes' version as R&B/Motown and the Beatles' version as Motown/Rock...
The DOORS - Live with strings and Horns...... Touch Me.
❤🎶❤️
The Carpenters also did a version of this too.
3rd comparison, that also holds up pretty well......Karen Carpenter, like butter.
Love the Marvelettes. Do their Don't Mess with Bill.
Delphonics - Didn't I blow your mind
I'm with the Marvelettes on this.
Marvelettes al the way
Doing this comparison is a cool idea. But don't forget about the Carpenters, they did it too!
Ringo does his classic Two Beats, then One Beat. He was too good. Just like Marvin Gaye did for the Marvelettes. A Classic beat we all love
Please react to U2 where the streets have no name
Super Bowl 36
Halftime show, a few months after 9-11
Love the Beatles version also. Bill Fisher
John Winston Lennon. My Favorite Male Vocalist.
JM I hope you’ll react to the song Fragile by Sting. It’s a beautiful song.
John Lennon - Most Important Individual In Modern Music. The Beatles - Greatest Musical Group In History. Nobody else comes close.
While The Marvelettes and The Beatles came before, I always liked The Carpenters version better.
An even better version was done by the Carpenters, the video was filmed a Disney land, very entertaining and upbeat.
Add another Classic Group name to your awesome Playlist.
try the version by the carpenters its fabulous
The Marvelettes win this one. It's interesting that in the early days the Beatles' song writing couldn't keep up with the push to pump out albums so they always filled with covers from American R&B or Soul groups. Twist and Shout, Baby It's You, You Really Got a Hold on Me, and so on. Good but not as pleasing as the originals.
