This comment is for Craig. Firstly, I enjoy the videos you all do. And like you, I’m highly skeptical/perfectionist and have been struggling with weight since 1989. I’m 25 lbs from my goal and part is due to your videos, so thank you. In the video you mentioned that fecal fat output is the same: 8 gms of fat between a 4-week scientific test of 1 group eating between 62-152 gms of fat and another group eating between 120-320gms of fat. You mentioned that both groups excreted the same amount of fat output (grams). But I’m not sure if this is correct as the article states that they have confirmed with their study that "fecal fat output increases when dietary fat intake increases". The amount of output is significantly higher with a higher fat intake. This is on page 960 of the PDF. This explains why we have some people eating a very high-fat diet and maintaining a lean body which is probably more due to genetics (that skinny friend). Or my wife’s Mom who was born with an extraordinarily fast metabolism and maintains an 80lb body weight while eating a diet high in wheat and fat. I like your content but to say all that extra fat is stored seems a bit far-fetched don’t you think? Body types play a huge role in all this, and since both you and Maria seem like endomorphs (based on lower body structure) you are destined to easily hold more weight and naturally have an exceptionally high appetite with a low resting metabolic rate. My body is the same. As for the body gaining fat-weight, I think this is due to our overconsumption of calorie-dense foods. As you know a fat gram is 9 calories versus a protein gram is only 4. And because fat is much easier and faster to consume in higher amounts, exceeding the body's ability to utilize those calories is very easy. Even a very active endomorph will need to fight to the death to see the scale drop (if it ever does). For example 400 calories of Keto Bombs compared to 10 loaves of egg white bread. Protein is much harder to consume in larger amounts and satiety is reached much sooner because of this. So in the end, I think we are eating in a deficit followed by a diet with stable blood sugar and utilizing some ketones for fuel. I’m now finding out why it’s very detrimental to “cheat” and introduce sugar which then confuses the body as to which energy source to burn. So my conclusion is to eat a diet high in protein to be full and satisfied and once in a while use “fat” as a treat instead of a “carb” as a treat. In the end, you are in a deficit with the highest probability to maintain muscle mass at the same time. It may be one of the only choices we have.
And to the point about people eating very high fat and staying lean, that isn't due to this effect. That is because they are lean and thus need a lot of fat in the diet to fuel them. When in maintenance you need more fat in the diet. :)
Yes, Sorry, it has been a while since I read this study. Actually, it is even less fat in the stool than I stated. On page 956 it states that the low fat diet saw an average of 1.1g fat in the stool and the high fat saw 3.1g in the stool. The average increase from adding an extra 90g fat to the diet was 1.96 extra grams of fat in the stool. :) Page 956: Fecal fatty acid excretion also increased on the high fat diet. Total excretion on the low fat diet was 1.14 ±0.35 g/day rising to 3.1±0.71 g/day (t = 11.4; P < 0.001) on the high fat diet. The average increase in fatty acid output was 1.96±0.42 g/day of which C16:0 and C18:0 accounted for 76.0%±10.32
Lol every time they say “you don’t need a stick of butter on top of your steak” so hilarious 😂 Also when Maria said “you didn’t continue your fast (w bulletproof coffee) You just drank 500 calories.” 😂🤷🏽♀️
Thank you for posting this! So many influencers (both personalities and medical professionals) have promoted eating more butter and good fats -- but it just ruins it for people that are mostly trying to reduce body fat. Thanks for your insightful short video. 🎉🎉🎉
Thx so much for this video. I’m carnivore and have been eating more fat due to much TH-cam advice. I feel best with one fatty meal (fatty meat nothing added) and a leaner meal high protein for dinner. Going back to that starting today! 15 lbs to go!!
I've been maintaining my weight on ketovore but I'd like to gain muscle and lose more fat. Since discovering your channel I've gained so much knowledge and realized I'm addicted to dairy. It's been so hard for me to drop and that's why I'm not losing fat. 😅
I understand what you're saying.. But I have to lose 20 pounds. I lost 40+ pounds 2 years ago going keto or low carb.. but I got lazy and in last 6 months noticed I was gaining and going low carb wasn't helping lose the extra 20 pounds I'd regained. SO.. MY POINT IS.. I'm trying to go carnivore.. I am doing a lot of butter.. in morning coffee.. and in evening warm drink.. and it's really helping with cravings and hunger.. I'm rarely feeling either, eating the butter (not sure if it's a stick a day, but it's more than I was eating), but I hear you saying it's not going to help me lose weight.. So I don't know what to do. I'm 66 grandma, I should be more active, but I don't see that happening at this stage of my life.
The problem is you might lose weight, but how much of what you are losing is lean mass? Likely a lot. You MUST prioritize lean protein, especially as a female at your age. Sticks of butter and bullet proof coffees is not the answer for long term results and longevity 🙏
I totally remember the Wow chips. Olestra if I'm not mistaken. I remember telling my coworker about the disclaimer "may cause a__l leakage" as she was scarfing down a mega bag. She didn't believe me. I dared her to read the label. She'd eaten about half the bag at that point. Let's just say it wasn't long before she had to make her exit.😂😂😂
I definitely dont eat straight up butter. I eat lean chicken breast or fish 5 days a week and fatty pork chop or beef/ribeye 2 days with over twice the calories. I tried to increase the fat to not be so rigid and include variety, but Im gaining weight. How would you go about trying to reverse out of the only chicken and egg whites?
I think if you used their free macro calculator, you would be able to balance out your intake and see some amazing results. Worked for me! Another thing is making sure you're getting good sleep and that there isn't anything off with your hormones. Sometimes we can do everything right, in terms of food intake and macros, but still see weight gain or stall. Could be hormones at play, that need some balancing out. You came to the right place though! Maria and Craig can help. Have you checked out their supplement plans, or considered a personal health assessment? Oh! And I forgot to mention that Maria has excellent recipes and cookbooks that really help. Check them out!
Make sure you are getting enough quality sleep, cut out all dairy, grains, nuts, gluten, and coffee, and make sure your macros are right: mariamindbodyhealth.com/calculator/
What if I wanted to GAIN weight? I have been through medical hell the past year and lost about 10 pounds and a LOT of muscle mass. I am 5'6" and only 118 pounds! That scares me (my ideal weight is 125-130), but I seem to have no appetite (probably because I took opioids for so long after my surgery and subsequent complications). But I took myself off the opioids about 6 months ago (talk about withdrawal symptoms!!!) and still my appetite is not what it should be. I am 74 years old and have always been very active, so not happy about all this. I live on a small farm by myself, with a large organic garden and chickens, and have a small business and a part-time job, so this has set me back a lot. I've just ordered 4 of your books, and until I receive them, I've been easing into keto on my own. Before this I've been mostly a veg person, but have been eating more and more meat (but I admit not enough fat). Anyway, what do you recommend for people who actually want to GAIN weight and muscle mass? Because of complications with hip and knee replacements (I think nerve and/or bone damage) as well as a severe case of spondylolisthesis in my low back, I am not able to exercise (yet). Thanks so much for all that you do - I am so happy I found you :)
I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. You can adjust your macros for maintenance or even weight gain. Just select the appropriate goals on the macro calculator: mariamindbodyhealth.com/calculator/
@@MariaEmmerich haha, I missed the setting on the calculator that said "Build Muscle and Gain Weight". Duh!!! Thank you so much :) Unfortunately the only fat I see is around my belly (which I know is bad) lol
This makes so much sense. But what about those gurus that say that to lose weight and not jack up your kidneys and thyroid and to get fat adapted you need to eat 200 grams of fat per day? So many calories and then add to it protein etc it comes about a lot.
I see your point but I asked Neisha Berry this very question and she stated that the excess fats get breathed out. Assuming in the same way that we lose weight (fat) through our breath?
No, it does not get breathed out. The only part of fat you breathe out is acetone which comes from FFA made into ketones, then enters Krebs cycle with acetone as a byproduct of burning the ketones. Breath ketones. You only dump significant amounts into the breath when you are first adapting to keto. That is why some people get keto breath. It's the increased acetone in the breath. Once you are fat adapted, your body is primarily burning free fatty acids (FFA) not ketones and thus you use less ketones and excrete less acetone in the breath. If you dumped any significant amount of fat into the breath as acetone, you would have the worst breath on the planet. :)
I have a question on poop, floating poop or poop that sinks to the bottom. My way of thinking is floating poop contains fat and sinking poop not enough fat. I’ve heard when poop never sinks your not producing enough bile. I trust you both more than anyone else and would like your thoughts on this. Thanks for all you both do!
Regardless of how much dietary fat you consume roughly the same amount of fat is passed through the stool. If you are concerned about the consistency, shape, texture, etc of your bowl movements please consult with your physician 🙏
I’m not concerned about my stool I was just wondering why some poop float and some sink🤔 is on better than the other? I’ve always heard your poop should sink not float
I understand and appreciate what you’re saying. But can you explain to me why sleep is sooooooo much better when I eat more fat? I’m curious. The good sleep alone is almost worth adding all the extra fat but it’s so much harder to lose when adding more fat.
There are too many factors at play for me to say for sure without knowing more. But I’ve been helping clients lose weight, improve their sleep and reverse disease processes with this WOE for over 20 years 🙏❤️
I need help. I had my gallbladder out so fat is out. I have IBS so fiber is out. I have many digestive issues. Veggies cause diarrhea, fruit causes diarrhea. I also have high sugar. Lean meat see. ms ok. Carbs no good. Nuts cause diarrhea. What in the world can I eat ?
This WOE is actually great for your situation because we do not teach high fat. You prioritize lean animal protein, moderate fat, and limit total carbs to 20g or less per day.
I eat 2 meals a day 30 to 35 g of protein, and 30 to 35g fat in each meal plus 20g of carbs per day . I personally find when I eat less than this amount of fat per meal, I get very hungry in less than 4 hours I am eating just under 1000 calories per day and I am losing weight I don't think I can do a PSMF. I cam never go back to 30g of fat per day
Please make sure you are getting adequate protein. 1000 calories a day every day is not a lot of fuel and if you are only averaging 60-70g of protein per day that is not nearly enough. The bare minimum protein requirement for a 5 ft tall woman is 80g per day. You also want to be careful not to cause metabolic adaptation, so adding an overfeeding day every few weeks is ideal. You can get correct macros here: mariamindbodyhealth.com/calculator/
Thank you for responding. Blessings. I am finding it very difficult to go over that amount of protein. I have gout . All meat with purines cause me tremendous pain .Red meat pork bacon chicken even sardines tuna mackerel. I can't eat Greek yoghurt or use casein protein powder without pain as well. When I eat 90 g of protein, my knees explode with excruciating pain . The only protein I can eat without giving me pain are eggs . I just can't wrap my head to eat more than 5 eggs are day . I usually mix eggs with another protein source to minimize the pain . My meals are about 8 hours apart . I measure everything to the gram. I know I should eat more protein, but I can't deal with the pain.
When I went low fat my weight dropped from over 200 to about 172. I then stalled and then my weight started rising. Now I am back above 200 pounds. I continued high fat.
@@MariaEmmerich I am 5' 7" tall. I am 67 years old. I have been keeping my proteins about 70 grams and was keeping my fat about 150 with carbs about 20. Now protein is 128. Fat 80 to 90 grams and fat from 5 to 20 grams.

Were you increasing your salt? Usually that helps a lot with constipation when doing keto. I am without a gallbladder as well. After a few months of cutting dairy and nuts down to little or none and doing PMSF a few days a week + one overfeeding day, my bowel movements leveled out and became perfect (haha, there is such a thing). I also noticed that adding a small plain salad of lettuce, tomatoes and onions helped, but not entirely sure if it was the veggies, or just meeting my protein macros. In any case, I'd look at your salt intake and possibly electrolytes. I take a gallbladder formula with my vitamins at my first meal and it seems to help. But even without it, I was doing okay. Just takes time to find the sweet spot for your body my friend. I hope you find yours and resolve your digestive issues. Maria and Craig have excellent supplement plans that are worth the $25/plan. You should have a look. There is a Constipation plan and a Digestive one.
I like your macro calculator but never have managed to eat that much protein ... it is as if I had to eat about 1 pound . I know protein is a goal but I'm afraid that if not reaching it then there will be muscle loss. What are your thoughts? Perhaps you have an article / video about it?
Protein is a daily requirement that you always want to meet or exceed to avoid muscle loss. It isn't that hard to reach your protein goal. For example, 8oz of chicken breast contains about 70g of protein. mariamindbodyhealth.com/how-to-increase-protein-without-adding-fat/
I am mostly carnivore and exercise daily.my protein intake is usually around 200 gr and my fat intake around 150gr and less .how these numbers seem to you?
You should use their macro calculator. It really helps. Sounds like you're in maintenance eating that much protein and fat, so you can select the maintenance option after you plug in your measurements, etc. Hope this helps!
I would need to know a lot more information about you. Check out my free macro calculator (and be sure to read the notes at the top before you fill it out): mariamindbodyhealth.com/calculator/
This is what vegan doctor McDougall always used to say - "the fat you eat is the fat you wear". Healthy animal fat is absolutely neccessary to be healthy, but we don't need to add exogenous sources of it. Meat heals! 😍🥩
First of all I'm on carnivore. The more protein I eat and the more fat I drop the hungrier I get. Adding more fat satisfied me. Sometimes it's not about just losing weight it's also about fixing hormones and digestive issues. On carnivore it's different than keto because you get rabbit starvation without enough fat. Also all those egg whites on PSMF gave me constipation almost took me to the emergency room. Just saying.
Thats because fat is 9 calories per gram and protein only 4 (and effectively protein isn't used much as a fuel). So just add more protein to help with satiety. :)
Rabbit Starvation is a myth. Adding protein will help with satiety. I agree that it's not always about losing weight, and hormone and GI health are important things to consider. But you do not need to eat excessive amounts of fat. Also, if eggs caused you serious issues it means you are sensitive to them and you should avoid them. But that is not the case for everyone :)
The only time rabbit starvation becomes an issue is if you are eating very little carbs or fat, AND your are very lean. If you have weight to lose, your body will just use the stored body fat for fuel. :)
I'm so confused. Dr. Ben Bikman is an expert in BIoenenergentics and metabolism. He has discussed that fat cannot be stored without the presence of insulin, no exceptions.
While Ben is right about the presence of insulin, he is wrong about the context. Yes, if you have no insulin (so are a type 1 diabetic who isn't taking insulin shots) then you can't store fat. But none of us are going around with no insulin in our body. We all have insulin present all the time. jIn fact, if you are overweight or obese you likely have very high insulin levels all the time. Most people when they start working with us have fasting insulin of 10, 20 or even 30! So the lowest their insulin ever goes is 30. So we all have insulin all the time and if overweight have high insulin all the time.
I tend to agree with you but.....what about that Steak and butter gal who is so skinny and slender but she eats so much fat !!!! All I can say is that she's maintaining and she's never had any metabolic disorder at all ......ND I'd like to see some pictures of you Marua when you were at your heaviest
First, she is in maintenance, not trying to lose weight. When you are in maintenance you up the fat to maintain. Very different situation than someone obese trying to lose weight. Also, she is quite tall and never had a weight problem. Nothing against her, she is great. But context is key.
I am just not satisfy when eating high fat. My body always asks for more protein. I have terrible IBS and leading more towards what some call ketovore has been helpful for me (tiny bity veggies and berries).
Carbs are not the answer. You need to get your macros right for your goals 🙏 To kick start weight loss and healing the first and most important thing is to get your macros right.
Page 956:
Fecal fatty acid excretion also increased on the high fat diet. Total excretion on the low fat diet was 1.14 ±0.35 g/day rising to 3.1±0.71 g/day (t = 11.4; P < 0.001) on the high fat diet. The average increase in fatty acid output was 1.96±0.42 g/day of which C16:0 and C18:0 accounted for 76.0%±10.32
Thank you for this😊
You're welcome 😊

Lol every time they say “you don’t need a stick of butter on top of your steak” so hilarious 😂
Also when Maria said “you didn’t continue your fast (w bulletproof coffee) You just drank 500 calories.” 😂🤷🏽♀️
😁
Yet another super informative video. Thank you both!
Thank you for posting this! So many influencers (both personalities and medical professionals) have promoted eating more butter and good fats -- but it just ruins it for people that are mostly trying to reduce body fat. Thanks for your insightful short video. 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for watching!
Thx so much for this video. I’m carnivore and have been eating more fat due to much TH-cam advice. I feel best with one fatty meal (fatty meat nothing added) and a leaner meal high protein for dinner. Going back to that starting today! 15 lbs to go!!
You've got this! 🎉
Thank you so much for clarifying
I've been maintaining my weight on ketovore but I'd like to gain muscle and lose more fat. Since discovering your channel I've gained so much knowledge and realized I'm addicted to dairy. It's been so hard for me to drop and that's why I'm not losing fat. 😅
Quitting dairy is a game changer!
Thank you, it helped me get a better understanding.
So using fatty cuts of meats will be enough fat?? I'm trying to lose body fat.
No reason to eat fatty cuts, leaner cuts are great too when weight loss is the goal. :)
Oh no 😂😂😂😂
@@MariaEmmerich Oh yes! 🤣
I get severely constipated with high fat
Make sure you are getting enough sodium and avoid dairy to get rid of constipation 🙏❤️
Thanks guys!
No truth to it. Check out just a few of our client testimonies about kidney health here:

@@MariaEmmerich thanks! 💕
Those “gurus” are wrong.
If the excess fats get breathed out, then how do carnivores sometimes gain weight, and I don’t mean muscle weight? It’s obviously not too much carbs.
But I’ve been helping clients lose weight, improve their sleep and reverse disease processes with this WOE for over 20 years 🙏❤️
Thank you!!
And try adding a digestive enzyme: mariamindbodyhealth.com/spectrazyme-pan-9x/
I eat 2 meals a day 30 to 35 g of protein, and 30 to 35g fat in each meal plus 20g of carbs per day . I personally find when I eat less than this amount of fat per meal, I get very hungry in less than 4 hours
I am eating just under 1000 calories per day and I am losing weight
I don't think I can do a PSMF.
Really? Dang. I would be honored if you would do a Personal Health Assessment with me. I think I can help 🙏keto-adapted.com/product/assessment-form/
When I went low fat my weight dropped from over 200 to about 172. I then stalled and then my weight started rising. Now I am back above 200 pounds. I continued high fat.
What is your height, age and macros?
@@MariaEmmerich I am 5' 7" tall. I am 67 years old. I have been keeping my proteins about 70 grams and was keeping my fat about 150 with carbs about 20. Now protein is 128. Fat 80 to 90 grams and fat from 5 to 20 grams.
You protein is way too low and your fat is too high for weight loss.

My problem was constipation 🥴 no gall bladder tho can't take ox bile it gives me heartburn 😑
Sounds like an electrolyte problem: mariamindbodyhealth.com/how-to-balance-electrolytes/
Happened to me. Added butter and I started gaining fat. Since then I've been studying the science.
Way to meet your goals!

What do you think about taking amino acids
I think it is fine, especially for building lean mass :) mariamindbodyhealth.com/amino-acids-for-muscle-growth/
I eat ketovore, and it’s opposite with me. Fat makes me hungrier while protein fills me up.
Thats because fat is 9 calories per gram and protein only 4 (and effectively protein isn't used much as a fuel). So just add more protein to help with satiety. :)
@@craigemmerich exactly
Rabbit Starvation is a myth. Adding protein will help with satiety. I agree that it's not always about losing weight, and hormone and GI health are important things to consider. But you do not need to eat excessive amounts of fat. Also, if eggs caused you serious issues it means you are sensitive to them and you should avoid them. But that is not the case for everyone :)
The only time rabbit starvation becomes an issue is if you are eating very little carbs or fat, AND your are very lean. If you have weight to lose, your body will just use the stored body fat for fuel. :)
I have the APOE4 genotype. Isn’t fat necessary?
No, I don't think so. Prioritize protein and adjust fat based on your goals. :)
Fat is necessary, but only 30-40g a day minimum. With APOE4 you want to prioritize getting omega 3's in from fish.
What about the lymphatic system? I thought fat was good for that??
I am not losing weight. I also started to eat more fat because I thought it was good.
Hopefully this video helps 🙏
Maria you crack me up laughing on here 😃I love you.
😂🙏❤️
I have some photos here of my before. I am almost half my size. :)
