This episode is aboat electricity and aboat power usage on our boat and aboat how you can measure power usage on your boat. That’s aboat it! Thanks DS3 crew, great stuff as ever!
You're the first channel I've seen that has done this in Watt hours. It makes more sense to me. Amp Hours were always confusing, especially when devices (toaster, solar panels, etc.) all seem to have Watt ratings. Thanks!
Great video, One thing I would like to comment on that will affect your over usage is the efficiency of your Inverter. Sometimes they can be quite low so if the usage is from an inverter an adjustment should be made when calculating you kWH. Keep up the good work Lewis
Hi both of you guys. It seems wind power is phasing out. I was looking at 12 ft diameter in an architectural project because the area was very windy; and facing south, i was surprised to hear from the very supplier that turbines are too much maintenance ... and with the solar prices falling ... also there is the noise factor, we hear those still around on boats. Some are less noisy. Water turbines will slow you down but the folding prop compensates. I have been using a bungy sort of auto pilot (0watt), i have been successful at it , anyway i dont like leaving the nav. , best way to get into trouble, the AP did a 360 once ... If i may suggest , you can add real estate for more solar. Use the underneath of the panel and add more cells . Fold or not. Reflective surface will help get more power from down under. We never had to use our genset, but used it anyway for longevity. Ice making and super good iceboxes are a good idea. This next summer i will try a tarp and noodle floating water collector, even if some lake or sea water gets in, it should be good to use for cooking, showers, etc. LEDs and soon better stuff is such a blessing. No "no-see-em" in the bahamas ? I love the docks, i love the parties, i love the beach, i love the bikinis, BUT ; I hate bugs, i really hate em ... they make me half insane...
Hi, thank you for sharing with the community, this is well appreciated. As I can see, you estimate 600 w/d for your Watermaker? This would be for how many litres/day? Usually isn’t about 5w/litre?
Please support us and make our living for us, but we don't bother answering questions that several people want to know...I'm another that would like this question answered.
Ok, so we have our daily use estimates. You mentioned in the first video, that you have 10,000 wh of battery storage. If those are SLA batteries, you shouldn't discharge those beyond 50%. So you essentially have 1 day (with 600 wh spare) in battery without generating any power. At anchor you have nearly 2 days of power. This would be different if your batteries chemistry is different. Does your BMS automatically cut off to prevent over-discharging of the batteries? Or do you just keep on it manually? What are your batteries?
Excellent. Looking forward to the next part. Will you guys be putting any new tv seasons on Vimeo? I have them all and would love to have season 11, etc. Peace & blessings
The keel lift motor draws 70Amps!? That's a scary amount of current. Or is it an AC motor and this current is measured on the DC (battery) side of the inverter?
Many boaters do calculate with Amp-hours but amps aren't really power. I prefer watts since it is a true power rating. Many boats now have 24V systems and then it just gets confusing in amp-hours.
Finally, a very well produced video done in WHrs vs counting Amps. Just fantastic, and really nice electrical layout work. Top level, professional.
Probably would help to differentiate amps, watts, amp-hours before starting this discussion for those unfamiliar. Thanks for all the work!

Nicely done Paul, you’ve inspired me to figure out the electrical on our boat.

Very well done
best I have seen yet!
Cheers
Very useful, thank you! It reinforces what I learnt on our fabulous DSIII Sail Away week last week. I hope the next leg goes smoothly for you all.

Another great video from you! Now you should tell about all the Canadian secrets for lowering your power usage... or not!
That's nice explanation supported by consumption table as summary in the end
Great video!
Thanks, very informative. Looking forward with anticipation to the next one and hopefully the wizardry of your engine driven generator!
This is fantastic! What kind of display / monitor are you using at 2:03 in order to monitor your battery system? That looks super cool and useful
Looking forward to seeing how you make 4kw at sea. Keep up the technical videos!
Very informative & very well presented.
Wow best thing i have seen on youtube
Oooh shoutout to the T and C islands! Love that place.
I like this series
Thanks Paul! With love, Ken
Great video, very helpful. Makes me want to change my 12v panel :)
The twin edit got my sub 👊🏼
Good special fx. Can't wait for battery tech to get better power to weight ratio.

When can we hope for Part 3? The first two were great.

Enjoy Turgut :-)
Can you talk about the solar power you have and how useful it is when adding to the power you generate. Thanks.
Excellent vid ya'll.
Is that 4.4 KWh per day at sea? Interested in how you generate that. Cheers.

Thanks for This. Is that a Jeanneau?
Take a look at 12v chargers for the laptops. They are fairly reasonably priced.
Very good...Thanks for sharing...
Glad you enjoyed it!

Biggest Power Draw:
My Home Theater with Bose surround sound & 10' screen, but we're usually only using it on Passage.
Wow a 10' screen! Thats some passages you take :-)
the digital monitor that you shows on your boat the amount of power you are using - what brand is it?
Well done.
I plugged a genset into my shore power and got an "ungrounded" alarm. Is this dangerous? Thanks
Great to have some figures to work to.
What video editing software do you use?
Thanks Eric we use Apples Final Cut Pro X plus Apple Motion for effects😅
The keel lift motor draws 70Amps!? That's a scary amount of current. Or is it an AC motor and this current is measured on the DC (battery) side of the inverter?
Yes that’s 70 amps at 12 volts about 800 watts
Can you do a Technical Tuesday on using a Sextant and celestial navigation please??
the totals at end of video, are they watt hours?
Yes they are.
Thanks interesting video 👍 up from me.
I thought most of us went by amp hours because that's what most batteries are rated in....
Many boaters do calculate with Amp-hours but amps aren't really power. I prefer watts since it is a true power rating. Many boats now have 24V systems and then it just gets confusing in amp-hours.
Nice formulation. Seems like a lot but your running a lot of stuff.
I agree we have some room to be more economical on power. Having a powerful system has been fun - now we need to see how little we can use!
