    Thanks for making a video for the exact comparison I wanted lol! I have a PRS CE24 as well, in Whale Blue, and was wondering how close it was to a Telecaster specifically.

    The important thing to know is that when a humbucker is split to the single coil, it is lower output than a standard single coil. The reason is that if a pickup is going to be made to do double duty as both a single coil and a humbucker, a compromise must be made with the output. If you make a humbucker that has just as much output as a standard single coil when split, then it is going to have way more output than a standard humbucker when not split. Conversely, if you make it have regular humbucker output when not split, it is going to be a weak single coil when you split it. If you compromise right down the middle, you will have a humbucker that is not quite a regular humbucker output and not quite a regular single coil output. It’s always going to be a compromise.

    To be fair, I believe PRS voices the coil split in their humbuckers more towards a Strat single coil, rather than a Telecaster single coil. So that could account for some of the difference. No coil split sounds exactly like a true single coil in my opinion, but I have to admit, PRS has gotten closer than any other coil split I have ever heard with their newest TCI pickups. The coil split on my PRS Modern Eagle V is nearly indistinguishable to my Strat pickups, whereas the coil split on my Les Paul sounds very different.

    • @benjaminck6768
      @benjaminck6768 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have came to this conclusion on my modern eagle V as well! I thought it strat like and not tele like, though these nuances fade less with gain

    Oh man, busting out "Californication" at 0:26 haha! Sounded so good. I like both sounds. I think it would just depend on if you wanted a brighter tone or more mellow. The tele was brighter, but the PRS was warmer, almost acoustic like. Both are definitely usable tones, and the convenience of having both on one guitar is something to look at too. Especially if you're covering a variety of styles. I don't think you could go wrong with either!

    • @LonnyEagletonMusic
      @LonnyEagletonMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally! Keep in mind too that the Tele has a maple fretboard, whereas the PRS has a rosewood fretboard. So inherently it will have a darker sound because of that. A fair comparison would be both of them having the same type of wood.

    For the prs the humbucker sounds more bluesy and for the coil split gives me that tropical Jimmy Buffett kind of vibe. I absolutely love prs guitars and I think it is a very fluctuating guitar and can do well playing anything youd want to play. It has a more rich tone and melodic tone as well. I'm not that big of a telecaster fan due to my style of playing but prs sounds absolutely amazing! I enjoyed this so much!

    Thought you might be interested in an interesting tip to consider. A goldilocks option that I have finally found is the PRS Tremonti Baritone Hybrid setup and tuned to standard with a pickup swap and rewiring for coil tapping. 25.5" scale, maple neck, and wraparound stoptail bridge gives it as much snap as a tele but the mahogany body, set neck, and single cut keeps the body of a typical PRS or LP. I have found this to be the best of all worlds option, for me at least, and negates the want to grab different guitars at times. Medium output pickups are ideal for the partial could tapping (e.g. BKP True Grit, Holy Diver, Polymath).
    This was a great and helpful video and so was your 4 guitar comparison video.

    I use my 2018 American Original 60s Telecaster and 2019 CE24 Semi-hollowbody interchangeably. I find that the 85/15 TM pickups don't have a very big signal loss when split. Also, I feel like that pickups are pretty clean sounding.

    • @JakobMaier
      @JakobMaier 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      wood and body shape don't make any difference, it's probably really due to scale length. Shorter scale length means the strings need less tension to be tuned to the same pitch, and that's audible

    The PRS sounds great for a single coil split, but the Tele is the master. I guess I'm more of a purist, although I like what I hear.

    • @Ardano62
      @Ardano62 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean you prefer style and esthetics over sound? If you did a blind test, would you pick out all the telecasters?

    • @e.paradigm7415
      @e.paradigm7415 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ardano62Those are some pretty bold statements! Lol. I wouldn’t pick ALL Teles, at the end of the day it’s all subjective. I own a fender player tele and I preferred that over a pro 2 that I owned. However, in this particular video, I can hear a major differences between the two, the Tele just sounds much brighter than the PRS. I’ve also owned 2 different guitars with coil splits and I just don’t like the sound, for me they sound a little digital. If I want a twangy bright sound, I’ll go Tele all day, humbuckers I’ll go with some Seymour Duncans, if I want some single coils I’ll go with my fender strat. It just depends and that’s why I said I was a bit of a purist when it came down to it. Again, there is no right or wrongs, music comes from the player.

  • @sptoyman
    @sptoyman 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great video and great playing. Both sound very good. I think the Tele has slightly more twang, but the PRS comes close. Even though there is a slight difference, in a live band setting you probably wouldn't notice the difference. Love the versatility of the PRS. Finally, Fender's Player Plus Tele and their Ultra Tele now have a coil tap that combines both PU's into series giving it a more Humbucker sound. So increasing their versatility. Tough decision. You can't go wrong with either.

    Do you think it would pull off that nasally SRV/Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child type neck pickup sound? That’s generally what I go for. I love the PRS and I want to try one but if I need a Strat then I just need a Strat.

    • @LonnyEagletonMusic
      @LonnyEagletonMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it could get 90% of that tone. Throw a good overdrive or fuzz pedal in front of it and you’ll certainly be in the ball park.
      You have to remember that they ARE split pickups, so it’s not going to be 100% of a true single coil, but it’s damn close.
      In a mix I don’t think you’d hear the difference. So to answer your question, it depends if you’re okay with some wiggle room on the tone. If you’re flexible with that 90% closeness then this could likely work for you.

    I think they both sound amazing but I do like the CE24 a bit more for some reason. Also I’m loving Crimson Skies. I can’t wait for the next single or the album! (Also I may be getting the VIP meet and greet for a concert near to my town for my birthday idk though my parents are super sneaky. And we also need a babysitter for my brothers lol)

      Plus the Stairway To Heaven solo was recorded on a Telecaster, so you can’t argue with that haha. That being said, I do think PRS does an amazing job with their coil split wiring. Each is useful in its own way! 👌🏻

    Like the PRS generally- but the Knopfler licks are better on the Telecaster.
    On the PRS everybody in earshot would recognize the progression - but it lacks the bite and grittiness needed.
    Just MHO- I’m usually more disposed to PRS sounds but not on this.

    had a bass that had a passive mode and a split coil. there was a song i used to play that i either did one or the other or both for the intro then switched to everything on for the rest of the song. worked very well. now i use two or three basses that are soapbars or humbuckers with a darkglass pedal to add to tone. works great. three of my four basses have three band eq's with soapbars on two then a pj configuration on another but the other has the humbucker with a tone knob. i use jackson and dean right now. the dean really kills it on kiss, bvb, the big 4's am i evil, and more. also sorry if this comment was confusing at points. im hella tired at the time of writing this lol. you rock Lonny. hope to see you in september with bvb. if not, maybe on a future tour. 🤘

    I bought a PRS as my first guitar exactly because it is so versatile and sounds great! Of course the single coils on stratocaster and telecaster cannot be 100% copied with split humbuckers, but I ain't complaining on the slightly thicker sound though! I definitely want an SSS strat later sometime, but for now I'm over the moon with my current guitar ^^ BTW I love these videos, please keep them coming :)

    Great video and to the point! Unless it was the tone knob on the guitars making a difference in the sound, the PRS was slightly a bit less chimey and more warmer. Listening with Head Phones here, I’d give the PRS a 9.8 The versatility with the PRS is a big plus. You can’t lose with PRS!

    The PRS was still a bit more mid-rangey. But it's surprising how similar the two sounded considering they are completely different instruments. The PRS didn't sound like a humbucker, just a slightly warmer single coil.

    If only there was a CE22 08 w/ piezo. I have a HBII w/ a maple neck and blending in a little of the piezo has been giving me enough tele vibes to get by for years (piezo volume on ~3 brings in some of the snap and zing of a tele), but I finally broke down and have a tele on the way because I really need that spank. That said I really do believe a CE22 08 piezo would be the best jack of all trades option if it actually existed, that is unless they also threw in the LP style 4 pots like on the 594 as that would make it a perfect desert island guitar.

    to my ear i can hear the difference. The true fender single coil is bit chimmer to the split coil. Split coil sounded more like the squire series single coil pickup which sounds a bit fat and rounded than the fender single coil. Split coil makes this guitar versatile and single coil sound is also very good in my opinion.
