I’m black and I love metal. Growing up listening to Terrence Hobbs was inspirational. Especially since most metal groups I liked didn’t have black guys in so when I heard terrence playing And absolutely destroying it gave me more confidence to just be myself and not give a fuck what people thought of me. I honestly can say that’s guys like Terrence Hobbs, bad brains, mike smith, and other guys gave me a pair of balls that I probably wouldn’t have had otherwise. Just great musicians regardless of their race.
I am black and I listened to heavy metal. I remember when my father hated me listening to Cannibal Corpse and wanted me to deleted the album off my phone, but I still listen to it. During that time, it was good and bad times for me. When it was the bad times, metal made me feel good and it got the energy out of me.
@@jamesedwards-tn6gp you got that right. Metal definitely helps you get the negative energy out and it also fun to listen to. Sometimes you have to look up lyrics for death metal because it’s like a language you need to decipher.
Jimi hendrix was one of the most important, guitarist for the creation of metal he inspired every one he inspired jimmy page, and he influenced tony iommi, and black sabbath invented metal, "black sabbath has allegedly written every riff that can be written the only thing you can do is play faster or slower, and tune down lower"[alex Webster cannibal corpse]
We need to promote OUR style of music that's why! WE have spent too much time trying to support a community that does not respect US. So let's just promote the Black(ADOS) Hard rock& Metal scene.
Because Funk was killed by the music industry, (still pisses me off) rock was was removed from our black brothers. Pop was what they were pushed into and rap was their breakout. Rap wasn't new. Hell, folk and country music did it for centuries, but kids on the streets took it, with new beat voice rhythms and broke out. I never liked rap music but I have killer respect for it. I really wished I could have went back in time to give those kids a bass guitar. I'd rater that on my streets than the over distorted fake bass that ruins.
Greg Fulton of Cyclone Temple pretty much wrote all the music. He started with Znowwhite, then Cyclone. Then he formed Rebels Without Applause(RWA) and put out two records: Low End Head Stomp and Rip Hop Soul Crush Core). Now he does party rock with Sweet Diesel Jenkins.
Yeah, his mom was an African-American woman who went to the UK for work and married a white British guy, but split up when Slash was young. Slash's mom later briefly dated David Bowie, too.
Stone vengeance. 80s speed metal thrash. All black dudes. They're still around (last time I checked). Phenomenal musicians. Best bass player I've ever heard.
Metal was very close to punk rock at the beginning. It was socially conscious, it could get political. I think the main thing that is going against metal is harsh vocals and what’s being said in the lyrics. Not every one can relate to Hammersmashed face, or Angel of Death. Hip Hop is more lyrical and touches on topics that everyone who grew up in that street environment can relate to. While it has developed at times into flexing wealth, that is something the culture still can appreciate, because the guy bragging came up from nothing and is now wearing Gucci and flying on private jets. While as a 16 year old who didn’t fit in, I found a release in metal. It’s kind of like it was made for me because I was an outcast. I was able to channel my rage through music. I grew up in a suburb and I didn’t like the same things as everyone else. I wanted to stand out in some way and metal was a catalyst.
As a black chick familiar with Afro-Punk, I'm loving "Nu Metal" so far, this Hip Hop/R&B Disciple is dipping my toes in slowly, just discovered a bunch of sub genres, i like a handful, I've listened to Glam Rock in the 80's LOL
It’s because black communities put pressure on their kids not to be in to rock and metal,I’ve heard one guy say “it was white boy music”. Nothings changed since Jimi Hendrix.
I know a few metalheads in my community. A few of them are Black. One thing I heard from a friend of mine is that it's not something that's encouraged in the community. Hip Hop is just there... sadly... even the shitty artists. Everywhere you go, people just rather listen to Hip Hop. In a way that's true since I know a lot of people in general just listen to whatever the radio puts on, Black or not.
I feel like this makes sense. I'm not black but half Indian, thus non-white. Back when I first started getting into metal and picking up guitar my family would constantly ask me why I'd listen to "white people music". To me it was never about it being black, brown or white, I just liked the music. It sucks that there's so many stigma's still present in music, you'd think that this wouldn't be a thing in today's age.
@@geodavid3129 so sad man, music has no color, I hate speeches saying ppl stole this, ppl stole that, bro just listen to whatever tf you like, you dont need acceptance or approval from anyone, its even sadder when we talk about americans, US society sucks because everything is political, and racial and I hate it, why is it bad to listen ´´white music´´ there is no suck thing as that as there is no suck thing as ´´black music´´ its just music god dammit XD, take it or leave it but dont make people feel sad and pulled apart. I see this most of the times in non-white communities, minorities hate everything related to the whites, they think its sort of opressive or whatever the fuck they think, as it being white is a synonim for being the devil, theres a little bit of hate and racism there too, americans will grow up as a society when they stop seing skin color as something important, because its not, no one gives a fuck if your grandparent was colombian or german, no one cares, you are you cause you are you, and finally yes, minorities in the US tend to form communities, and someone or something outside them is seing as bad, so sad man
I'm a black South African metalhead, this is the same question I've had before, especially considering that rock/metal has roots in black culture with blues
I met Terrance and SUFFOCATION in Manila airport. THEN I learned who they are. We shared a chat and the same flight. You couldn't meet a nicer group of guys. I've watched them ever since. Hard work, dedication and masters of their instruments. Pinoeers of the genre.
I mean the black dudes were the ones that created the pre cursor to rock and metal. I’m talking about little Richard, Hendrix, all the blues and jazz artists from the past…
My brother who is mixed is the person who got me into "heavy metal". Showed me Iron Maiden. But i had heard grand funk before that, which i consider first wave heavy metal
i think, in part because it's looked down upon by their parents and peers who think their not "black" enough by liking a predominantly Caucasian genre of music and it's sad.
Black bands go under the radar alot. Punk definitely has more of a black history to it than Metal, still love Metal, as a Gay black & Latino mixed man, the anger I feel from that experience can only be Quenched with Extreme music, and Metal provides me with that mental release often and has been so so so healing. Pain is a universal human experience, and even tho we don’t all go through it the same, humans share severe intensity for their own lived experiences, and even though white privilege is definitely real, individual issues like abuse, and feeling outcasted bare real human experience. Also my intro to Metal, namely Death Metal(found other subgenres on my own) came from exposure too my black girl cousin who moved back to Cali from the Florida scene. But Metal is in my heart & soul. Gay dudes are usually hella upset that (no hate or judgement) that pop divas don’t do that for me. So I’ve felt outcasted by even them. Just for liking Metal & Punk, but yea I’ma love metal forever, 31 and still go’n strong.
I'm black I was born in 1980 I'm from the hood SRG4L & I've loved metal my while life I rep that shit hard everyone who knows me knows that crazy ass Ricky gets down with the sickness !
We're out here. We've been out here the whole time. I come from an entire family of Black metalheads/Blues heads. I was given a guitar by my Blues-playing uncle when I was 10 and the only place to go was heavy. I think modern capitalism sells Hip Hop to everyone as the one genuinely Black cultural signifier on planet Earth and a lot of us got brainwashed through that and environmental programming. There are big Metal scenes and bands in Botswana, South Africa, Morocco, Kenya and pretty much all over Africa. We are just as complex and diverse as anyone else and we do many things. Metal Music is certainly one of those things. The record industry never granted us chairs at the table like they did everyone else, so we are seldom talked about as fans and musicians but I do see that changing as of late now that the record industry is dead as hell. In the end the fans get what they want, and I don't think most of them care what our melanin content is.
I'm glad to see more diversity at shows. I work in a black majority community and I've had conversations about music with friends at work about music and in particular why more black folks aren't into metal. I think the biggest problem is people pushing this belief that this music belongs to these people and that music belongs to those people. The same divisive shit we always hear. I think more black folks would appreciate rock and metal if it weren't for that. After all, rock music, at its core, is protest music. It's music made by people who look at the world we live in and say "yo, this fucked up." I also think that rock and metal can be a way for black folks to talk about social issues to a large, predominately white audience.
we love metal, punk and hardcore. I've been entire this music for over 35 years. We are shamed for loving it in our own community. Their are many bands that are black or at least have one or two black members. There are more and more African American metal musicians coming out these days than ever, old school white metal heads just aren't paying attention
I'm mexican and my black friend Dawgs on me cause I love metal. I told him their are plenty of black people who listen and even play Metal 🤘 Then he stated that those people weren't REAL black people.......
I was turned on to Kiss in the early 80's, then VH. I'm a casual Metallica, Pantera fan. As a beginner bass player, I appreciate all types of metal. It used to sound like it was just fast, but "Insane Death Machne" makes me want to quit and practice at the same time
Everything is racially targeted by major corporation and industry that's forces people to be placed in a certain genre or category. And with black people I think they want to stick to there culture and try and hog it to themselves at the same time not branch out to others due to the judgement and backlash they might get from there family and friends and community. And can't lie white people want the same with there culture and music making it were on both sides sadly there are people that turn it into a hate thing forcing others out of the scene. Like I used to like Pantera before I found out he was basically a Nazi and then came to figure out that a shit ton of bands I liked had groups of people in them that let's say If I would have went to a concert probably wouldn't make it out alive. Same goes white people would they want to go to east Oakland to see a E40 concert and not get jumped or jacked. So sadly tell each side makes the scene more acceptable for others to come in we will be the same but I do see changes coming through and I'm starting to see more of every race in every form of music scenes. Maybe Metal just needs more head singers that are black that might help make things a bit different I know that shouldn't matter but you like what you like no matter what color and fuck the haters 😎
I think Dime Bag was a good friend of Dug Pinnik? King’s X were and are so ahead of their time, and yet are what the spirit of the 60s and 70s were. When they came on stage in 1988 or 89, there was a beautiful peaceful feeling in the room all of a sudden. It was the Gretchen Goes To Nebraska Tour, and I saw them in Nottingham not far from my home city.
I don’t want to live a life of hating. How can love hate and still be called Love? Our beliefs inform our behaviours. What a person believes informs their behaviours. I don’t think we’re any different to ancient tribes trying to make sense of a world, we don’t understand fully. We’re all still children, really.
Things are changing. Black kids (and kids in general) are a lot less political now. They are united by memes ironically. We've sort of coming to a generation where kids have stopped caring about shit and just want to enjoy life however they can now. That includes music and movies. Some 17 year old kid is a fan of Rings of Saturn? He's going to listen to them regardless of what his cousins or parents say. That's just the kind of environment we're coming to now. It has it's pros and cons, but that's normally how it works anyways.
Black people have been in heavy metal since the beginning mire than you even realize and even before the beginning . I write about them all the time plus I'm one
Not all bands but some bands have a toxic gate keeping fanbase. It's gatekeepers,Cultural Differences, and maybe not having friends who are into Heavy Metal that keeps the Black Heavy MetalHead fanbase low. I've met tons of Black Metal Heads in ,Nu-Metal,a few Death Metal, Grunge and some in Punk but Glamour Rock and Old Heavy Metal you would have to be introduced through mainstream or An Old Heavy Metalhead since it was predominantly white and springs from European/White American 70s, 80s culture. I only got introduce to Glamour and Old Heavy Metal from having a white parent who grow up in the 80s. If not I probably would have just in interest in my generations metal and mainstream ones like Megadeth, Metallica,Black Sabbath.
I have an even BETTER question? How. Do. We. KNOW. whether Black people like metal or not? Given there are at least several hundred million plus Black people on this planet, it's kind of silly to think that there wouldn't be Black people into metal or some other form of alt-rock. Let's face it, we aren't exactly the image people automatically think of as metalheads, lol. No one can tell what I'm listening to when they see me, but I'm sure most would assume it's rap/hip hop. I used to joke with my ex that the cops would bust me if they saw one of my phone playlists with Kamelot, Helloween, Maiden and Symphony X on it because they'd think I stole the phone. Even Black folks who call metal "white boy music" are probably listening to Motley Crue on the down low, lol. The internet has made it easier for us to find and connect with other Black metalheads and bands with Black musicians, but as a 57 year old Black metal chick, trust we've ALWAYS been here. If anything, it's the INDUSTRY that's done everything to shut us out and erase our presence. They're the problem.
their are more of US than you this realize ... especially as musician's or artist , it's weird to me that anyone "WHO" CONSIDERS themself as musician "COULD ' NOT appreciate beautiful form's of music from all over the this world only because of race, it's silly to me ,and mostly rap listener's do this! and they miss out to all the great craft's/ talents out there
The biggest problem in my opinion is that a lot of Black people don’t know their history. They don’t know our relationship to rock and roll, which hard rock and metal are branches off of that tree. Also, by the time Jimi Hendrix came along around ‘67, a black person making rock music was an anomaly. That was only a little over a decade removed from Chuck Berry! So to a lot of us rock and its offshoots are considered white folks music. I don’t feel like that, I know what’s up. But to a lot of Black people we’re not supposed to listen to or play rock/metal.
Muh racism. Get real, if it's such a "white space" then is rap a black space? I've seen plenty of black people complain about white rappers. Get over yourself
I think the music industry used Elvis priestly to highjack 50s rock and roll and make white people lisen 2 it, after that in 70s funk and disco was the black music of the time, and hip hop was starting to rear it's head,
Black people don’t like metal because black culture worldwide is driven by drums, bass, rhythm & soft melodies. Distorted guitars & heavy treble sounds are a turn off. When I used to let my bruthas & sistas listen to Metallica & Slayer back in 1990 they’d grimace & ask me, “Where da bass at?”😂😂My Mom would also tell me that Creedence Clearwater Revival was good white folk music but the rest lacked soul. Black people like to dance so are more likely to get into the Chili Peppers & Rage Against the Machine over bands like Brain Drill & Gorguts. Blacks are also weary of going outside the culture in fear of being called a sell out.

Yeah, that guitar intro for "You Can't Bring Me Down" is pretty sweet. Rocky George is a great player.
It's millions of us
I’m black and I love metal.
I fcking love metal. Would love to see more black people into metal music
I am black and I listened to heavy metal. I remember when my father hated me listening to Cannibal Corpse and wanted me to deleted the album off my phone, but I still listen to it. During that time, it was good and bad times for me. When it was the bad times, metal made me feel good and it got the energy out of me.
Same. I became a metal drummer and eventually started playing shows around Texas. I love metal, it's like a big family and way of life
@@jamesedwards-tn6gp you got that right. Metal definitely helps you get the negative energy out and it also fun to listen to. Sometimes you have to look up lyrics for death metal because it’s like a language you need to decipher.
Rock music is truly black music ,
Chuck berry , Little Richard, jimi Hendrix
Don’t forget SLASH from Guns N Roses. He was half black although a lot of people including me didn’t know. Lol
"Was" half black? So he's went through a little phase there
@@Ishbu101 little phase? what does that even mean

I’m an African American male who likes Punk, Metal, Goth, Classical, Dark Classical etc., and proud of it. Arigatou.
Terrance !!!!
I’m a huge fan of slipknot. Idgaf. Rap metal and rock are 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm a biracial woman and I love metal!
Look at the bands in Africa like Wrust, Crackdust, Last Year Tragedy, and Overthrust
That Botswanan metal scene is awesome!
Mixed here, metal forever 🤘🏾
Yeah im Indian American. Believe me, every other Indian kid I know is a rapper or DJ of some sort
In the Chicago area there was a metal band called Znow white and that band had Black guys in it.
It's changing now. A lot of black folk doing metal reactions and loving it.
I met Terrance and SUFFOCATION in Manila airport. THEN I learned who they are. We shared a chat and the same flight. You couldn't meet a nicer group of guys. I've watched them ever since. Hard work, dedication and masters of their instruments. Pinoeers of the genre.
Derrick Green is another one who is the lead singer of the rock band from Brazil, Sepultura.
I mean the black dudes were the ones that created the pre cursor to rock and metal. I’m talking about little Richard, Hendrix, all the blues and jazz artists from the past…
It's slowly changing
There are many. Not in USA though.
This is interesting to, because I will watch black guys, doing song reaction videos to metal. And almost always they seem to like the metal songs.
I’m mixed black I love rock and metal music I just wish there were more of us.
Caller of the Storms in Blasphemy... Terrance Hobbs is a god of guitar
My top favorite black instrument players are Terrence Hobbs, Mike Smith and Jimi Hendrix. I said Jimi Hendrix just because I love death metal so much.
Terrance is legend in death metal
Black dude here lite skin lol .been a metal head for years never had a problem. I m a drummer Played many shows with different bands.
I search up African metal bands from time to time and a lot of them are really good!
We out here! Once the show’s over, we disappear back into the world
I'm mexican and my black friend Dawgs on me cause I love metal.
It used to sound like it was just fast, but "Insane Death Machne" makes me want to quit and practice at the same time
I'm a black dude from France, and I've always loved rock and metal despite the mockery!
Im asian and i love metal!

Im brown and definitely had issues with nazi punks... like calling me up, leaving threats and stuff
Yeah Terrance mentioned Oceano! I love when these guys talk about their babies (Early Deathcore/ BDM / Slam. lmao
If you are bothered by politicization then why ask why there aren't more black guys?
Because becoming a real musician takes actual work...

I'm a white guy, but in my local metal scene, most of my friends are black! I didn't really expect it, but it's pretty cool.
Growing up, they thought metal was a phase I’d grow out of. I’m nearly 61. Nobody thinks that any more LOL
Black people have been in heavy metal since the beginning mire than you even realize and even before the beginning . I write about them all the time plus I'm one

One of the best to ever do it. Terence is a legend. Guy invented tech death, slam and brutal death

They're the problem.
their are more of US than you this realize ...
especially as musician's or artist ,
it's weird to me that anyone "WHO" CONSIDERS themself as musician "COULD ' NOT appreciate beautiful form's of music from all over the this world only because of race,
it's silly to me ,and mostly rap listener's do this!
and they miss out to all the great craft's/ talents out there
The biggest problem in my opinion is that a lot of Black people don’t know their history.

These days the only resistance you’ll see from black people in metal comes from other black people..
Y’all are great at playing the victim
I think the music industry used Elvis priestly to highjack 50s rock and roll and make white people lisen 2 it, after that in 70s funk and disco was the black music of the time, and hip hop was starting to rear it's head,
There is black guy's in black metal?
Never in my life have I seen a heavy metal band made up of blacks..
You haven’t seen lots of stuff in your life.
You probably don’t know any black person personally.
search African black metal bands... you'll be surprised!
