Pantera is just this extremely strange oddity because they were absolutely musical virtuosos, masters of riff and groove and composition and most people never paid attention to them because Pantera was also a thrashy, punk-y garage metal act. But they groove and harmonize and shred in ways no other band could. And both the drummer (Vinnie Paul Abbot) and his brother the guitarist (Dimebag Darrel Abbot) were absolute perfection musically. Dimebag is regarded as one of the greatest metal and rock guitarists of all time despite his short life, and I don't think anyone in the metal or rock world would really even be interested in trying to argue that he wasn't. Eddie Van Halen even regarded him as one of the best.
Nobody paid attention to them? The album this song is from debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. Not the Billboard rock or metal charts, the Billboard chart that covers all music. It is by far the heaviest album to debut at number 1 on that chart.
Pantera are by far the masters of groove metal. They pretty much started the genre. Dimebag is god on guitar. I'd say these guys are responsible for a LOT of what modern metal is. The grooves, the breakdowns, the slam riffs, all of it comes from Pantera.
Phil Anselmo was one of the most versatile metal vocalists of all time. He had multiple primes in multiple vocal styles. Listen to shattered by pantera to hear how different he could sound
Awesome reaction to this! If you really want to hear how versatile Phil Anselmo's vocals are, you need to give "Cemetery Gates" a listen. You will be amazed how he goes from clean to harsh vocals, and back again. It's my all time favorite song by Pantera! I guarantee you will love the lyrics, and be blown away at the end of the song! RIP to brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Peace! 🤘✌
Also as someone who's as much into Metal as I am Hip Hop but learnt it the other way round, grew up with Metal, learnt to adore Hip Hop as an adult, I love seeing other people checking out the other side of the aisle.
You are so right on the Iommi/Sabbath influence and sound, Pantera are also a one guitar band, so when Dimebag is soloing, that gives Rex on the bass scope to fill in the rhythm where normally you'd hear another guitar, just like Tony & Geezer !
My bro!! Great reaction video, I'm hoping you react to Cemetery Gates (studio version). I promise it's going to blow your mind and it won't be what you expect it to be.
You are ready for “Cemetery Gates”! I cannot emphasize enough the importance that you listen to the album version (Long Version). The video version cuts out the intro, which is so important to the atmosphere of the song! The intro sets up everything, including the mind blowing outro!! Keep rocking! So glad you found Pantera, enjoy the jams ✌️
They have a literal bottomless pit of grooving metal tracks like this: Cowboys from Hell, i’m Broken (official video recommended), Mouth For War, Regular People, Piss, Drag the Waters, Revolution is my Name, Walk, Primal Concrete Sledge, This Love… All straight fire and plenty to get you started
We need more Pantera reactions on the channel, great reaction btw! "Shedding Skin" is also a great song lyrically and musically by them that you should check out next.
If you want to hear Phil's range in his vocals, check out "Cemetery Gates". He is literally singing his ass off. His vocals against Dime's licks are insane. "WALK" is another great Pantera song. RIP Abbott Brothers. 💔 🕊You made us Texans SO proud ! 👏
Phil brings out his operatic side a lot more on the previous album. Glad you didn't start with Walk, everyone seems only to react to that one. It's awesome, but they have like a dozen amazing tracks.
I was a fan of Pantera in the 80’s when Phil joined the band .. Power Metal was their first album with him and i loved it … Phil pretty much pioneered that growling style of vocals and as a long time metal guy I am unaware of anyone singing like this … Metallica maybe … but Phil took it some place else … and the Abbot brothers were just simply amazing and exceptional musicians.. RIP Dime .. formerly known as Diamond Darrell Lance
Pantera covered some Black Sabbath songs, actually. Two by tequest and one at the end of this same album. The guys in Black Sabbath loved Pantera. They were indeed heavily influenced by Black Sabbath as kids, then got to tour with them.
Phil Anselmo, vocalist for Pantera, has discussed the incident that led to the lyrics he wrote for this song, multiple times during interviews. The best part about the story, is when this fan’s father, who was speaking to Pantera’s manager, said he he didn’t care about the lawsuit, and just wanted “5 minutes alone with that Phil Anselmo”, to which their manager responded, “no you don’t.”
Super cool seeing a young hip hop guy into my all time favorite band. Since you seem to like groove and you already said he has a demon voice....I suggest their track "By Demons Be Driven". Somewhat of a deep cut you don't see many react to.
Yeah, Pantera is about as heavy as it gets before it just becomes noise IMO 😉 this is tasty and smooth, groovy and heavy the way it’s supposed to be. Keep up the Pantera reactions and I’ll keep coming through. CAME FOR THE BEATLES/Stayed for Pantera 🙌
I’m with you. In my opinion any more and it just becomes chugga chugga with Cookie Monster scream mumbling through a song. I need my metal to have a hint of blues/classic rock. Take Pantera for example I’m Broken has some zeppelin flavor, 5 minutes alone is angry ZZ Top.
I think with a lot of metal screams or growls, it’s done monotone, not really hitting any notes. Phil is singing and screaming at the same time. So there’s melody to it.
Soo, the fans are gonna tell you to listen to all the radio friendly tracks and they should because you should listen to them, but….. can we get som amazing B sides? Message in Blood, By Demons Be driven, Hells Wrath “living through me”, or It makes them disappear/I’ll cast a shadow which in my opinion is two songs that need to be heard together 🤷♂️
I like calling it Cookie Monster vocals. My favorite Cookie Monster and probably the start of it was Cannibal Corpse. Now that would be fun to watch you react to a song like I Cum Blood.
I just can’t get beyond the constant growling. I love it occasionallyas an accent, but the whole song done that way….with no dynamics…..just full on from start to finish…..I cannot get beyond it to the instrumentation, the groove…the words…..anything.
I'm generally a person that can't get into growling voices but Pantera was a special band where the groove hooked me. Cemetery gates was an earlier track that has more singing and for a metal vocalist he has great range.

Thanks for the reaction and analysis, Pantera pretty much cemented me as a life long metalhead and as guitar player aficionado, And at first i found it peculiar that most metal songs you react to you found some Iommi influence in them, but then I remembered that the guy pretty much invented the whole movement, so yeah you'll most likely find his DNA on every metal song there is one way or another, Silly me for overthinking it. 😏
I can appreciate the lyrics, the screaming vocals not my style. No offense to those out there that love this style. There is so much music out there, that there is something for all of us. Great analysis as usual 😊
@@esoterica412 I hear frustration, anger, annoyance at critics who don't 'get it'. All artists have faced critics and sometimes that criticism is brutal and unfair. All art is subjective, so what a critic is saying is purely opinion. I can understand why an artist would like "five minutes out back" to 'discuss' the finer points". of the art (music in this case). So I think I understand where the singer is coming from, he is fed up constantly answering inane questions and dealing with haters. Eminem is famous for voicing his frustration with critics, Dee Snider testified before congress that heavy metal was not demonic and leading kids into devil worship. So what I appreciate in the lyrics is that the message is one I've heard before and agree with. Critics often get it wrong and know nothing about the music. I think the musicality is complex and can hear some parts I like, it's only the style of the lyric delivery that I find hard to relate to. Same reason I prefer Beethoven over Wagner.

One of Dimebag's biggest influences was Eddie Van Halen. Once you know that you can hear the influence in his solo's.
I would say Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes and Tonni Iommi

I feel like fighting somebody now thanks a lot
Pantera’s version of Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan” is mostly overlooked and deserves a listen.
Phil's vocals are what opened me up to harsh vocals many years ago.
Pantera: Kings of Grooove

Great reaction! You must react to Cemetery Gates. You'll love it. 🤘
Actually, the brothers are from a suburb sandwiched between Fort Worth and Arlington called Pantego Texas. Hence the name Pantera.
Top notch analysis
I believe they have called themselves Groove Metal. So you were right on point 👉
Can`t go wrong. Far Beyond is a pretty dark album imo. Good Friends and a Bottle Of P!lls is a really dark song. love it!

Definitely do Cemetery Gates next
That entire album is absolute fire. 🔥

You HAVE to do DOMINATION LIVE ‘91!
Talking about "hip-hop" metal groups, you should definetly do Rage Aginst the Machine - killing in the name
I'd start RATM with Wake Up or Down Rodeo. Real eye openers.
Check out Domination Live in Moscow 1991 by Pantara 🤘🤘🤘
