If my Old Man was still with us, and he saw what you two are doing, he'd shake your hand and buy you a cold one! This country needs a couple hundred million more dads like you.
All of this stirs up lotsa happy memories for me, thinking about all the stuff my pop taught me when I was coming up. If you keep going like this, JD`s gonna grow up to be a good man.
That's actually more important than the car, even though it's looking great and is probably gonna be something you can both be really proud of.
I can't say enough good things about all of this. You guys are setting examples for everybody.

Such a nice sentiment here in your comment about your father and also your seeing how JD is being instructed and parented by Dal'un.
My dad passed too young before his 61st year, sometimes I feel his cancer was a byproduct of the distillates he worked with for decades.
      p.s.
jpalberthoward, that's quite a compilation of names kind of reminds me of the moniker I use, which honors my pop.
Curljo Robbie; I choose 'Curly' as my nickname for any job where I have to adorn a name tag/badge, being I'm totally bald up top (and all around everywhere, TMI) The 'jo' and Robbie honors my dad as he was an auto body refinisher and his painter's coveralls had a name patch with his nick name, Robbie that references our sir name, Robbins. And my pop's middle name Joe is where the
-jo' comes from in 'Curlyjo' ....so there you may see what I'm suggesting or pointing out about your YT moniker. (?)

@@claztube when I saw "Full Metal Jacket" I was struck by Joker's peace sign on his lapel and "born to kill" on his helmet. When the colonel asked about it, he said "it has to do with the dualistic nature of man, the Jungian thing sir"
For me, Albert is the brilliant, as in Einstein, and Howard is the Moronic, as in Curly and Moe. The opposites in balance, sometimes complementary, sometimes cancelling each other. The dualistic nature of man, the Jungian thing. The inevitable contradiction in all of us. Curly and Moe had moments of brilliance, and Einstein Wore loafers because he couldn't remember how to tie his shoes, he couldn't drive a car, and he once fell in an open man hole.

You are doing a great job teaching JD! I was 12 when I helped my Dad do ‘glass rust repair and full paint on a ‘60 Valiant; it was the first time for both of us, and I’ll never forget it. I do love watching the TH-cam guys who can turn a flat piece of sheet metal into a quarter, but when cornered I’ll cut, ‘glass and fill my own vehicles (I tell myself that steel is old school, I’m using “composites” - less of a stigma). Looking forward to the color!

"Museum Quality" is for museum pieces... This is a car, and it´s meant to be driven! If someone has the time, money, skills, tools and inclination... sure, go ahead, rebuild it to showroom specs (the original cars weren´t!). This is a reasonable, achievable way to keep it alive and hopefully driven. Keep it coming!

So if JD or someone else down the road wants to fully restore this car you've got everything you've done documented which makes a difference. There's no surprises. The important thing is that it's not just rotting away. 10 20 years from now it'll still be there to be fully restored.

JD's learning a lot. Some of the best schooling a kid can get is learning how to do these things on their on and save tons of money. And agree with you totally on why do so many strive for perfection. Get it done and spend a lot less money and enjoy it. It'll still look good.

Kinda like their budget builds used 25k worth of free-to-them parts . Old timers used exactly these "wrong" methods because they got your car back on the road quickly and it didn't cost more than the car was worth. Thanks for showing folks a real budget build.

Doesn't matter if it's right , left or down the center. The fact that you let him do all that for himself & learn, is something he will never forget. Nor will I for that is the fun of watching this build. Yep you do alot to help it along, but you are teaching him better than most i've seen & aren't afraid of what mistakes may happen. Just for reference, the correct technical term for your 'eye gauge' is an Eyechrometer (pronounced: eye-crommetta) and is the most effective tool in a man's arsenal when he is working on a project. They never need calibrating and the best thing about them is the instinctual nature that all arbitrary measurements are fluid in length, height, depth, width or volume in order that they fit the concept or the need currently under scrutiny.
Also, body filler is a no-nonsense product that corrects holes, dents, cracks and blemishes that an eyechrometer may or may not have had any influence in creating.......
On the fibreglass version, when it came out in the late 80s, I put it on a rotting rocker panel as a test. Two years later, the metal on the rocker had gone completely (as there had been no prep and no effort made to stop water getting into it), but the fibreglass filler was still strong enough to withstand a good kick from a steel-cap. In the early 90s, I used it in the roof gutter, around the rear window and in the front valance of a car I was getting back on the road and sold soon after. Five years later when I saw the car again, that bodywork was still looking pristine with no sign of rust around the filled areas. It's magic stuff - very strong if laid on thick enough, sets like concrete and takes a fair bit to work it to the right shape, but I've never seen it bulge out, crack and fall off like the plastic stuff. I also just finished using the last of a gallon tin that I opened in 1998.....and it still set fine. A bit sticky on the top layer, but that's the first bit to be ground off, so who cares? It still worked....
My old man was cutting up a late 1940s Vauxhall with a gas axe back in the late 70s and was having a problem cutting through the rockers until he got his hammer and chisel out and chipped a piece of the rocker off. Someone had jammed a pile of chicken wire in this rotten rocker and then used concrete as the base filler.....and filled them rockers right up! That really shows that there's worse being used out in the wild than spray foam, eh? Ingenuity (or Redneckery if you prefer) is a world-wide phenomenon that literally has no bounds.....! All the best!

I'm putting off the body work for at least a couple of years. I'm good on mechanical stuff, but bodywork is too much like art class, and I didn't do well staying inside the lines. 😀

Aah yes brings me back to the days of folding pizza boxes and shoving them in the rocker panels and just slapping gallons of bondo to make a shape LOL. Jds rockers look simple enough tho to make a template of the radius and hand bend some sheet Metal in a vice but I love your approach. Keep on keeping on love it.

I love the "hack" fixes for the body work because at the end of the day if it looks good and you did it yourself on the cheap who cares how long it lasts

So nice to say your son working with you at that age. My dad was the opposite. Tear us down whenever you tried to do anything otherwise. Glad I never listen to him. I’m so handy in anything I’ve touched. Congratulations on the project

I appreciate your brutal honesty about the industry and the ridiculous obsession with "perfect" cars. I've had a 1972 olds 442 since I was 14 years old that has been in the process of a frame off restoration for 25 years. If anything, you have inspired me to worry more about getting it back on the road and less on perfection. Thanks Dalton and JD, you guys rock
