    Yes i think we can all agree on that. These could be used for long term for a few ppl, but the purpose of these two are to protect the town from tornadoes and a storm will come amd pass very quickly, they will be in these shelters for 30 min or so im estimating.

    Finally someone has the sense to use a vertical door, and one which opens in instead of out. Very little that can happen to block exiting. Horizontal doors, especially the ones that open out can trap the occupants if something lands or falls on it.
    I like the perimeter shroud too. Are they fuel tanks?

    interesting bit of additional which i can not access because i am in europe is that the 20,000-pound cooling tanks for Google servers were surplus equipment at the company's Pryor.and donated to the town

    Who would have thought they could be this simple. This gives me really good ideas on how to do it for my farm. Could be a cheese cave, wine making cellar, or anything until a storm comes. Thank you for this video!

    Very nice investment for the town. Like you said, hopefully no tornadoes until someone unlocks it.

  • @Livereater

    I'm really skeptical if these bunkers would be unlocked and accessible at all hours... like 3 a.m.? Otherwise, there will be corpses stacked outside the doors.

      I think that the bunkers would be unlocked considering its only a town of 350... I doubt they'd have much a reason to lock them.

  • @tonygotts199
    @tonygotts199 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That is really a storm shelter. Looking inside out I can see daylight through ventilation. So that isn't too good. The turbo vent that does exhaust can be ripped off and create a problem for everybody inside. Also the air intake is not filtered . There's only one way in and no other way out. Basically is a storm shelter

    • @dougmcdougal3777
      @dougmcdougal3777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Those vents are a weak link. This is definitely NOT a bunker. Only a storm shelter. Even a bad tornado could cause problems for this shelter.

    They should line that with a Sound absorbing material and put some kind of benches in there. Connect them together. But it was a great idea and can many lives. I lived in Kansas for a while and have seen a few tornadoes. Scare the hell out of me.

    Yeah, not good for bombs or chemical attacks, but probably more than sufficient for tornadoes. It looks like the rain would come right in the top. I guess that is why the drain is there on the bottom? And for cleaning, too. i would put a water pipe in there for fresh water, or keep some water bottles/food in there just in case you get trapped in there for a while.

    God forbid someone gets thirsty or has to go to the restroom. What if they get stuck in there or debri crushes the ventilation heads? I'm not sure those would save anyone from a huge tornado. Remember that tornado that went through Moore? It tore concrete out of the ground. Those need to be UNDER the ground. Not on top and surrounded by destructible materials. js/

    This would probably be great in most cases but what about EF5s? I read the tornado with the fastest windspeed was 302 mph but there may have been some in the past that were stronger like 350 mph. Some people even believe that some day there will be EF6s.

    Tornados are nothing to not be prepared for. While I was in Texas in 1972-74 living at Lackland and Sheppard AFB saw numerous tornados. Back then they only told you to get to bathroom with mattress for debris fall out, as Ican remember now. Granted that was 45 years ago. The barracks back then where the old WW2 buildings. Thankfully nothing ever happened then. Nice to see the citizens and town used their taxes for this.

    Our town in Oklahoma (Tornado Alley) shut down all public storm shelters. The Emergency Management for our county says the new procedure is for everyone to shelter in place. Recently, a 99.5 MILLION school bond was approved by voters which included new FEMA approved storm shelters for 5 schools. The public has to pay for the storm shelters, but the public can not use them according to the Public School main office (I asked before I voted).
    We took matters in our own hands. We now have an above ground safe room equipped with some beds. By the way, when we registered our storm shelter, our County Emergency Management office told us NOT to rely on them to save us and that you need to arrange with family, friends, and neighbors for them to save you should a disaster occur.
    Dutch.... Good job on showing storm/bunker shelters. Give people ideal of how they can provide their family some protection. If our state still has the Storm Shelter Rebates & Grants for Tornado pron areas, maybe when you do a video mention that. Might include a disclaimer that each person needs to do their own research on what is right for them. You are good at spelling out the costs and breaking it down for people. Ask people... what is your life and the life of your family worth?

    • @susieq9186
      @susieq9186 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mr. Thomas.... I like the way you think. People in public office are all about using our money. $14.5 Million of the $99.5 Million is what is allocated for the safe rooms at five of the schools (way over priced??). (I enclosed the article below to document what I am saying.) The bond just got approved in Sept. 2017 so I don't know when they will be built in the future. My understanding is that they will be built on school property for the school children and school personnel.
      Let me clarify....I have no knowledge of FEMA using the shelters. When I said FEMA approved storm shelter, that met that when they build the shelter they have to meet the guidelines established by FEMA (aka... the construction requirements). The local city is responsible for inspecting the storm shelters and certifying that they meet the FEMA guidelines for building a storm shelter.
      Years ago when they closed the shelters, they said it was because the new administration (under Obama) came out with new requirements on storm shelters, some having to do with being handy-cap accessible and for that reason, the shelters were all closed. I was told to go back to what we did in the old days. Shelter in place. How stupid is that when you live in Tornado Alley. (Although our city "loud" alarms are still working, I was also told that they don't have to sound those anymore, but local official are still having that done.) I think someone is trying to kill some of us off.
      Now that new shelters are scheduled to be built and they should comply with the new regulations, they still won't open them up to the public. I wish I was rich enough to sue them, but instead, I put my money into building our own storm shelter which is better for me and my family. That way... when I get to my shelter, I know there is enough room for me, my family & pets.
      Fyi.... I have been in a public storm shelter. People in this video made several comments. You are all standing up and packed into the shelter. It gets hot and there is no air flow. You can't bring your pets. Most public shelters don't stock water to drink. If you brought water and drink it, then you have no bathroom.
      Mr. Thomas.... It was a pleasure. Stay safe.

      lastniceguy1.... Agreed. The "Shelter in Place" came into effect in the Obama administration. I figured Obama was trying to kill some of us off. $20,000.00 dollars later, I have my own above ground safe room to "Shelter in Place" with beds, a little air conditioning, TV, water, composting toilet and OREO's. (Could of done it for less $, but I sure like what I have and when I go in it, I'm not worried about it blowing away.) Stay Safe!

      Yes and tornado shelters are always used fore tornado sheltering. A long tube with no living arrangements is not a bunker. That shelter cand hold persons fore may be 2 or 3 hours very at most. They will be packed ined as sardines and all standing up to hold all ofed those persons. It ised not even a fallout shelter! It is a very short term tornado SHELTER. But you keept ond dreaming all you do wish, it still will not make it more then it is.

    If they think that would hold or service 150 people a piece they're smoking crack. Anyone who grew up in England during WWII during the Blitz will tell you how uncomfortable even fitting 20-30 people in there long term would be. Maybe for an hour, maybe for a short storm, but if you put 150 people in each of those for a week you'd have shit piled up to the roof, bodies rotting, and people murdering each other for bread crumbs due to the complete lack of facilities available and the hugely restricted space. Fitting 350 in both you'd have to be stacking bodies like bloody firewood.

Since those are for storms...kiss all those cars good bye that people drove in to get there. You are better off having your own storm shelter on your own property. Plus, those, people can get into a lot faster.

    Excuse me but.... Exactly how much people *live* there? 20? Maybe 30? Technically what you're saying that the *entire* town can fit in *both* of those bunkers? The old *WW2* bunkers on Maui in Wailuku are bigger and they come *nowhere* near the holding *capacity* of either Kahului or Wailuku population! Those two bunkers can maybe hold an *entire* average bus load of *tourist* but not an entire town.

    Storm shelter not a bunker, and if they would have used corrugated pipe for the walls inside, their would be no echo. lol

    Mmm...NO! My fear of closed spaces shot up once you said 150 people should fit in there.

    150 people in each one????? I don't think so. Not a chance.

    Great bunker! Yep, I think I would be finding the guy with the keys and asking him why the 'emergency' bunker is LOCKED?!

    I thought from the outside that was just the entrance area and it would open up under ground however then you open up 150+ per tube no thank you would feel safer outside esp with one way in one way out what stopping some nut job blocking you in while he rides around town looting all your stuff.

      Me too. I could do it if there were just a few people in there, but if it got like sardines, I'm out. Take my chances outside.
