How I think Gertrud became a witch: Gertrud loved planting flowers her favorite flowers are roses she couldn’t plant roses because there were no rose seeds because roses didn’t grow in the environment Gertrud lived in so Gertrud wished for rose seeds and her wish was granted she planted her rose seeds and roses bloomed Gertrud was over joyed she had the roses for a while and then a wild animal destroyed Gertrud’s roses Gertrud saw that her roses were destroyed and then Gertrud felt grief and then her grief seed hatched.

Sayaka wishes to heal someone, so she gets a healing factor. Madoka wishes to change reality, and ends up becoming God. Kyoko wished people would listen to her dad, and got illusion powers (Word of God is funny like that). How does "I wish to live" give you the ability to summon enough firepower to give Charlton Heston an erection?!
From what I remember, the guns that she uses are made from her bows which represent her ties to life as she wished to continue living, so mami's ability isn't her weaponry, it's the bows.

The irony is, she wished to not die alone, so she lived alone, then met Madoka and...you should know the rest, heheheh.

What I've read and seen - Mami's guns aren't actually GUNS. Her wish tied her to the living world, so her actual ability is her ribbons - what she ACTUALLY does is weave these together, condensing the fabric of her 'ties' to create working guns (she condenses them into metal wires in one of the mangas, as well). Mami has to intimately know and consciously recreate her guns on the spot. Which is still hilarious, but dayum girl.

She beats up a giant butterfly willowthing, removes 50 shot guns from her skirt, turns ribbon into a gun, falls a 100 feet, and stands there drinking tea like nothing happened. That is badass
I love how they use much more detailed and often photorealistic animation for the witches. It makes them look so uncanny and out of place with everything else.
Gertrude was probably a green haired Magical Girl, if you look at the Witch it looks like a silhouette of a girl leaning forwards with her hair over her face.
