Two years ago you called me the luckiest man for winning back to back giveaways. I would have to say you're the luckiest . No way I would have had a valve spring break and not cause major engine damage.
Bonjour Monsieur C. Un superbe projet de restauration moteur. Vous allez récupérer un ATC magnifique, après l'avoir restauré ! Hâte de voir la suite ! Tommy Benezet
Any time you have a motor torn down to that level, Always Always Always replace the chain and any outer seals on the covers. Top end job and a cylinder refresh will be all benefit. Also new clutch plates beacuse that all comes apart to get the chain off so you might as well do it right.
Just pulled my 350X engine this summer. Have it sent out for repair still. I'm not an engine guy either. You are miles ahead of me on your engine skills. My problem is weird one, too. I'm hoping it isn't too expensive. Hoping for the best for you. Can't wait to see it fixed. Looking forward to your progress.
Very nice score! ❤ My low hour “mostly” original 1986 350x had one small crack in the rear fenders very similar to that and I was able to fix it good enough that you can’t even really notice it unless your right on top of the thing more or less. I could probably hide it even better but it’s good enough for me, looks better than before while holding the plastics together to prevent further cracking. Awesome video 👍🫶🏻
Great vid! Nothing like suspense building up to find the culprit. Looking forward for the next chapters very much. Today we got in a 1000cc twin side by side that the guy let the oil get low on the last 2 oil and filter changes and we told him. After it blew up we tore it down and found a mushroomed piston sideways stuck in the bore, the rod still attached but one rod bolt sheared off and the end cap dangling out of the bottom of the cylinder, and between 7 and 8 ounces of oil drained out. Yes, you did good with the 350x.
I agree on the timing chain, you're already in there anyway no harm in doing the inevitable now. If the piston isnt cracked Id run it too. Will be waiting for more videos on this 350x not a bike Im familiar with but it looks like overall for a machine pushing 40 its a nice bike.
What brand/source do you recommend with timing chains? I'm putting my 250sx motor back together now and figure i might as well while im in there too...
@@ChrisBrown-mo3qg mcr recommended d.i.d. but im working on my first rebuild right now i camt recommend a brand through experience. I bought a tusk one based of reviews to try for my first rebuild. Sorry i can't be of more help.
This is peak @mrcbuilds content!!!🤩....Love these "King of the hill" atc's. How did the rocker arms look? I imagine they'd be quite worn if the spring broke from fatigue. Can wait for more in this series.
Great video. I’d measure the cylinder out of round and taper and piston diameter just to make sure you’re still in spec. Might as well check all that while you’re in there. That trike is worth the extra love.
RFVC 4 Valve. Notorious for top end problems I have never liked those engines. 2 valve Honda 185S had less power but it was so much simpler and it did not have top end problems
my 350x had cam issue and after buying a used head and cam off ebay, I decided to keep a eye out for a 350D. Scored a 350d cheap and saved the top end for the next future 350x. with your collection of 350x migjt keep a eye out for one.
Nice looking 85 350X and it has the original back fenders and mud flap! I remember watching the other video of you overhauling the other 350x , I'm taking note's, because I have my 86 350x tore down to the bare frame and now I plan on doing a complete rebuild of the motor while i have it apart. I noticed my compression was on the low side of things even though it ran good before I disassembled it. I'm probably going to replace all the valve springs with all new ones plus a new DID timing chain. The numbers do start to add up when going through everything, but I think it's worth it to have a solid machine. I think like you said, the age on the machine starts to show itself and things are going to need to be updated. Looking forward to the Video on this machine👍
Hey CJ, be sure and print out the scematic in the service manual, its great to have with you when you start to put it back together. Thanks for watching
Yes , I have the service manual for it, and have looked at everything that needs attention when I get into it. I got some experience when I split the case on my 87 250 Big Red the wrong way when everything fell inside Lol! Do you think it would be worth putting a higher compression piston in my 350x or stay stock ?
Im going way back in my memory banks for this one. I was always told not to ride long wheelies on a 350X because you would starve it of oil due to the position if the oil pickup. Can anyone confirm if this is true or was just a rumor?
Hi david the oil pickup and screen is in the front lower part of the case, I could see that argument being made. it pumps oil to the top of the engine just like the 250es big red, 250sx, 250x, 300ex so if its bad for 1 it would be bad for all of these

Well may be we are related or something. Lol
Don't play the lottery because I play with Hondas lol best quote
Thanks.

Thank you Tommy, yes its going to be a nice little trike. Thanks for watching
Nice bro, still a score
Thanks man.

Agreed, chain is on order, i havent pulled the clutches to check them but it on the list. Thanks for watching.

Great engines. Just spend a little more time clearancing your guides.

Thank you, yes eventually I will work on that crack.
on the head, the decompression lever is different but the X lever fits
Awesome science class moment with the magnetized screwdriver and the keeper !
Mr. Wizard to the rescue. Funny the things you remember in life.
Dang, the only spring break i ever saw was on a beach lol
I think its was fatigue and high rpms that broke it.
Glad you made this video. 350x is one on my hit list. Some good points for me to look for. Excited to see what else you find and going back together.

Thanks for watching, happy to help

I think there are a few mods to help them live longer, but i agree the 200cc engines are bulletproof.

Thats a good idea. Thanks john.
I figured the 350d was based off the 350x motor.
Great video, really like the way you step through the problem solving... Like i would, just better!😂
Thank you Chris.

Put a big bore xr engine in it. I am putting a 1980 xr500 engine in my atc 185.
That sounds like fun
If your oil stinks that bad I bet the clutch is burnt or on its way
Webcams camshafts for the spring kit and keepers try Valvoline full synthetic
@@musiclovr2890 yep clutches were burned. Im replacing the whole vavle train. Kibblewhite and shindy
Well you got lucky. That could have been bad.
Yes I did, Parts are already on the way, looking forward seeing this one run again.

We need an “Eddie Van Halen” 350X !
That's a great Idea!
Hey there. Question. Can I run a 85 ATC 250R thumb throttle on my 84 atc 250r? If so, what cable should I run? Has oem Keihn on it.
The liquid Rs ran a specific throttle, i think you will run into cable lenght issues. All i can say it try and see.
@mrcbuilds Thank you sir
