I think the answer was given relatively often in the books - the minds were more or less indifferent to other forms of life and yet so advanced that they had no interest in enslaving or destroying life forms without neccesity. I never understood it as pet holder/pet relationship. Rather I saw it as some kind of indifferent gods looking at heir creation, enjoying the element of chaos they bring into it, while understanding that the Culture life forms created them. IMB´s view on religion or how it should be and another example of his "onion skin" concept. But I may be wrong.

I've watched Star Wars since childhood and recently read Dune so I'm pretty familiar with both, I think if Star Wars only took place on Tatooine it could easily be considered a ripoff, but Star Wars largely takes place on a lot of different planets, so apart from The Force and maybe space travel, they are very different.
I always found the Guild to be one the most interesting concept of Dune, even more that the Bene Gesserit. Maybe because the navigators are (almost) an alien lifeform in a universe full of humans.
The Guild Steersman mutated over thousands of years while living on massive Heighliner spaceships. They have become more like fish because they "swim" in zero gravity. This is actually more realistic than having constant and ever-present artificial gravity like in Star Wars or Star Trek. Making constant artificial gravity would require a lot of effort. In the long run, spacefaring humans will just evolve into fish people, while the humans that colonized the myriad or planets with gravity remained similar to humans of our time.
Amazing video! This is how I understand Paul's threat to the Spacing Guild works: Paul is more prescient than the Spacing Guild in that he can see the far distant future and beyond. The Spacing Guild cannot nearly see that far ahead. There are some timelines that he ratifies his threat and destroys the spice. The Spacing Guild, therefore, senses these alternate timelines that Paul has destroyed the spice, they don't know where he is now and they see him as a very real threat since they see future realities that they aren't able to be prescient anymore. If this is what is meant, Frank Herbert is a pretty trippy guy
the answer why they can't see him is given in the later books i think it was mentioned in dune messiah first the people who have the sight cant see the other people with the sight they only recognize the void and the actions they did to change the timeline. the navigators use this to plan the trap without paul seeing what's coming in messiah

They did it because they spent most of their lives in zero g and their muscles couldn't support their weight. It's also interesting that most art depicts them as being naked when the ones described in the books usually wear a kind of one piece coverall.
Back when the Dune movie version was released, I went to see it with my father, who was also a scifi fan. Afterwards, I bought all six books and read like an addict. After seeing Arrival, I have a degree in linguistics, I can’t wait to see what Denis Villeneuve does with Dune. I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but you have a beautiful voice. I came here a month ago because I was re-watching Bridge4 game of thrones videos. You appear in one of the live chat sessions with him. At the time I was rereading my Dune book, well one of them. So I looked Dune saw your name. Hmmm well he was good with GoT let’s see what he has to say ........... well I think I’ve seen all your videos now. I have to say you’re analyzing of the all things Dune is spot on. You have an amazing delivery. It has truly been a joy to spend my quarantine relaxing with you. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
So, I watched the video and it got me thinking about the scene where Reverend Mother Mohiam meets with Scytale and Edric. They came away with the feeling that Edric was a bit of a fool compared to his co-conspirators, but I wonder now if that was entirely the case. The others acted like Edric didn't completely understand what was going on, but he was a Guild Navigator, and based on what we learn later in the series, one of the very best they had. Edric could see all the possible outcomes. Now, he was clearly no politician or master of subtle wordplay-we saw that. But surely he saw how that meeting would end. He could see all the paths right up until they got near Paul Atreides. He could also see the chaos that blocked his vision-the disturbance in precognition caused by a fellow precognitive like Paul. So, Edric must have seen that at a future point that was not far off most paths led to a future where Paul was no longer muddying the waters. It looked to him, and no doubt the rest of the Guild, like the plan was destined to succeed. So why probe carefully in that first encounter? Edric already knew they would go ahead with the plan. He already knew that his colleagues would try to cut him out, and he knew it didn't matter. Edric speaks rather bluntly and comes across as simple because he's been trained to give responses that lead to the most predictable results. He's not the least skilled at wordplay or reading subtle signs, but why would he develop those skills? Why would a Guild Navigator ever need them?

A prevailing theory is that once humans establish themselves on planets other than earth, that evolutionary divergence will give rise to new species of human. I think Herbert did a wonderful job in fleshing this theory out in his Dune series. Navigators, Tleilaxu, Ixians, Bene Gesserit, Honored Matres...even the Fremen...all of them following their own evolutionary path. Brilliant writing.
Like a helmsman you steer away from the prequel/sequels. I found that they provided excellent insight in to filling the backstory of what set up the conditions for the Corrino empire.
I love how every depiction of the guild navigators is different. Some look fishlike or more wormlike like the god emperor, or some look like David Lynch's abomination, but it's fucking great. I like that Frank Herbert didn't need to explain the complex details of their features because our imagination already did and look at all the artwork that came from it.

the known universe is huge and yet there are only humans. Ever heard of the anthropic principle? sounds simple but it’s not, one explanation is that we are alone in the universe, I wonder if Herbert knew this and that’s the reason there are no aliens in the Dune universe. Keep up the great videos. Can't wait to see the new vision of this classic tale when it finally comes out. So far, I think they have made some very nice casting decisions. It will be interesting to see what happens though. I am sure you and I will appreciate it, but I have heard a lot of people say "Dune is an awesome book which will never make a good movie." Well, I sort of see their point but really liked both Lynch's version and the Sci-Fi Channel reboot Actually, if it weren't for the cheap looking stillsuits, I think the SciFi version was superior. So did my dad, who was a huge Dune fan right from the beginning. I really hope the new Dune coming out will make us take a standing ovation.
That isn't what most are concerned with these days. Most of the naysayers are jumping on the anti-sjw bandwagon because Liet is now female. I mean it is kinda a weird chioice for the role, but some are already convinced to boycott it based solely on that reason alone. They see Rey the Mary sue and Ghostbusters 2016 in everything with the slightest hint of wokeness.
The Navigators are the faction I'm the most fascinated with. They're held in reverence, have prescient abilities, and even the Bene Gesserit grudgingly respect them for this ability. The SyFy series really did that scene well where one emerges from his spice gas pod totally unearthly looking (and seemingly baked out of his gourd). I've asked myself how exactly do they steer the ship but if they're folding space they're simply making sure no stars or obstacles are in the way. Seems like a decent way of making a living for someone introverted and not minding the mutation-if you've reached that point self-image and esteem are probably concepts that are null and void with the mind expanding powers of total spice immersion with the caveat of forever being addicted.

I never realized how many references there are to Dune. Spore the game has space mining as it's primary trade. South Park recently had it's episode about fecal transplants and Tom Brady's "spice malange"
I believe the Navigator's chamber had null gravity to simulate the conditions on his ship, and the webbed hands and feet helped them swim through air in zero gravity.
If we look at the new Heighliner we can see the interior to be merely a tube or tunnel for transport ships to pass, and a blue planet on the other side the incoming ship departed from as it entered the Heighliner passing through to be in orbit above Caladan. This was when Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam came and tested the box on Paul. So here are some quantum mechanics principles I have abused to serve as a plot device to put some science in the fiction: The Guild Navigators are using massive quantities of spice to expand the hyper-quantum prescient properties melange such as prophetic visions, genetic memory recollection, and mentat cognitive capabilities from metaphysical to physical applications such as conscious integration with the quantum substructure of the Heighliners themselves, allowing the Navigators mental control of the probable location of waveforms in a controlled quantum superposition between two planets possibly hundreds or thousands of light years apart. They maintain a conscious entanglement with each waveform and particle, allowing the Heighliner to exist simultaneously at both starting and ending planets as both the superposition of a waveform in an indeterminate quantum state, yet "preobserved" by the conscious entanglement of the Guild Navigators to allow local decoherence and partial collapse of the waveform of the Heighliner into a reality in which transport ships can pass. The space through the interior of the Heighliner a transport ship passes exists as a non-temporal, non-spacious wormhole generated by the Holtzman engines created the fold in the spacetime continuum, another benefit of the famous scientist Ibrahim Vaughn Holtzman discoveries, along with Shield Technology, Anti-Gravity Suspensors and Glowglobes. But the positioning and course of the fold must be mentally directed by a Guild Navigator using spice gas to avoid gravitational forces like planets and stars, and see into the future with hyper-prescient precision to make corrections ahead of time.

40K's Navigator Houses are a clear nod to the huge influence Dune has had on the Warhammer 40,000 setting, as is the whole notion of the Emperor on Terra.
You can draw a parallel between the Guild and its reliance on the spice and commercial airlines and their reliance on petroleum based jet fuels. Commercial flight has allowed humans to travel in relative comfort and speed to almost anywhere on this planet, just as the Guild connects all the planets of the Imperium. You can even make a comparison between The Scattering and the last fifty years of our history in some ways. Humans travelling to the farthest reaches of this planet, relocation becoming much more feasible, intermingling of genetics and cultures, even the rise of digital nomads.
I love the art featuring the Spacing Guild, but I am afraid I have been able to shake the design from Lynch's Dune, which I saw before I really fell in love with reading.
Why would the navigators give up their humanity, what's in it for the individual navigator? It hit me that they are like heroin addicts. They only want spice, spice, spice. That's also why they sat on the power they had for thousands of years and did not get a direct control over Arrakis. Drug addicts suffer from shortsightedness, they only want more now. It never ceases to amaze me how alien Dune feels without any aliens whatsoever, while being so familiar.
Perhaps long life and the ability to safely travel to any place in the known universe at a moments notice. This coupled the fact that for 10,000 years they were the most powerful organization in the known universe as the Landsraad and even the Emperor would do their bidding. Also before Paul took the water of life they were the only prescient beings alive would be enough for anyone with a love of pure mathematics to allow the mutation.
Man...I didn't read Dune. I didn't watch the movies. I SHOULD have. I don't have a good excuse as to why I didn't. But seeing Quinn's enthusiasm and love of the Dune saga makes me regret it even more. So now I've purchased the book and need to make the time.
I was under the impression that navigator's tanks had a suspensor field to simulate a micro gravity environment as the Navigators were implied to be creatures of space.
@@louis8487 Yes in an unused passage in Dune Messiah published in The Road to Dune (2005), Edric is described as surviving without spice gas once a hole is opened in his tank. Yet it he would not survive for too long.

the known universe is huge and yet there are only humans. Ever heard of the anthropic principle? sounds simple but it’s not, one explanation is that we are alone in the universe, I wonder if Herbert knew this and that’s the reason there are no aliens in the Dune universe. Food for thought. I like your channel keep it up!

Keep up the great videos. Can't wait to see the new vision of this classic tale when it finally comes out. So far, I think they have made some very nice casting decisions. It will be interesting to see what happens though. I am sure you and I will appreciate it, but I have heard a lot of people say "Dune is an awesome book which will never make a good movie." Well, I sort of see their point but really liked both Lynch's version and the Sci-Fi Channel reboot Actually, if it weren't for the cheap looking stillsuits, I think the SciFi version was superior. So did my dad, who was a huge Dune fan right from the beginning.
I really hope the new Dune coming out will make us take a standing ovation.
That isn't what most are concerned with these days. Most of the naysayers are jumping on the anti-sjw bandwagon because Liet is now female. I mean it is kinda a weird chioice for the role, but some are already convinced to boycott it based solely on that reason alone. They see Rey the Mary sue and Ghostbusters 2016 in everything with the slightest hint of wokeness.
The Navigators are the faction I'm the most fascinated with. They're held in reverence, have prescient abilities, and even the Bene Gesserit grudgingly respect them for this ability. The SyFy series really did that scene well where one emerges from his spice gas pod totally unearthly looking (and seemingly baked out of his gourd). I've asked myself how exactly do they steer the ship but if they're folding space they're simply making sure no stars or obstacles are in the way. Seems like a decent way of making a living for someone introverted and not minding the mutation-if you've reached that point self-image and esteem are probably concepts that are null and void with the mind expanding powers of total spice immersion with the caveat of forever being addicted.

I believe the Navigator's chamber had null gravity to simulate the conditions on his ship, and the webbed hands and feet helped them swim through air in zero gravity.

If we look at the new Heighliner we can see the interior to be merely a tube or tunnel for transport ships to pass, and a blue planet on the other side the incoming ship departed from as it entered the Heighliner passing through to be in orbit above Caladan. This was when Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam came and tested the box on Paul.
So here are some quantum mechanics principles I have abused to serve as a plot device to put some science in the fiction:
The Guild Navigators are using massive quantities of spice to expand the hyper-quantum prescient properties melange such as prophetic visions, genetic memory recollection, and mentat cognitive capabilities from metaphysical to physical applications such as conscious integration with the quantum substructure of the Heighliners themselves, allowing the Navigators mental control of the probable location of waveforms in a controlled quantum superposition between two planets possibly hundreds or thousands of light years apart. They maintain a conscious entanglement with each waveform and particle, allowing the Heighliner to exist simultaneously at both starting and ending planets as both the superposition of a waveform in an indeterminate quantum state, yet "preobserved" by the conscious entanglement of the Guild Navigators to allow local decoherence and partial collapse of the waveform of the Heighliner into a reality in which transport ships can pass.
The space through the interior of the Heighliner a transport ship passes exists as a non-temporal, non-spacious wormhole generated by the Holtzman engines created the fold in the spacetime continuum, another benefit of the famous scientist Ibrahim Vaughn Holtzman discoveries, along with Shield Technology, Anti-Gravity Suspensors and Glowglobes. But the positioning and course of the fold must be mentally directed by a Guild Navigator using spice gas to avoid gravitational forces like planets and stars, and see into the future with hyper-prescient precision to make corrections ahead of time.

40K's Navigator Houses are a clear nod to the huge influence Dune has had on the Warhammer 40,000 setting, as is the whole notion of the Emperor on Terra.
You can draw a parallel between the Guild and its reliance on the spice and commercial airlines and their reliance on petroleum based jet fuels. Commercial flight has allowed humans to travel in relative comfort and speed to almost anywhere on this planet, just as the Guild connects all the planets of the Imperium. You can even make a comparison between The Scattering and the last fifty years of our history in some ways. Humans travelling to the farthest reaches of this planet, relocation becoming much more feasible, intermingling of genetics and cultures, even the rise of digital nomads.

Quinn, I am surprised that you have not much material about Dune Swordmasters, and their training.
Why would the navigators give up their humanity, what's in it for the individual navigator? It hit me that they are like heroin addicts. They only want spice, spice, spice. That's also why they sat on the power they had for thousands of years and did not get a direct control over Arrakis. Drug addicts suffer from shortsightedness, they only want more now. It never ceases to amaze me how alien Dune feels without any aliens whatsoever, while being so familiar.
Perhaps long life and the ability to safely travel to any place in the known universe at a moments notice. This coupled the fact that for 10,000 years they were the most powerful organization in the known universe as the Landsraad and even the Emperor would do their bidding. Also before Paul took the water of life they were the only prescient beings alive would be enough for anyone with a love of pure mathematics to allow the mutation.

Man...I didn't read Dune. I didn't watch the movies. I SHOULD have. I don't have a good excuse as to why I didn't. But seeing Quinn's enthusiasm and love of the Dune saga makes me regret it even more. So now I've purchased the book and need to make the time.
I was under the impression that navigator's tanks had a suspensor field to simulate a micro gravity environment as the Navigators were implied to be creatures of space.
that's what makes sense to me, mutated to the point where normal atmosphere and gravity are dangerous/deadly
They can survive in normal human conditions however they lose their prescience and are pretty much useless.
@@louis8487 Yes in an unused passage in Dune Messiah published in The Road to Dune (2005), Edric is described as surviving without spice gas once a hole is opened in his tank. Yet it he would not survive for too long.
