  • here is a video from my dyno rhodes - it is a mark 1 stage rhodes 73 from 1977 with build in stereo chorus and of course the pro piano preamp with equalizer controls from dyno my piano. first you can hear the normal setting, then with stereo chorus, after that the dyno setting with the overtones and at last the normal setting again so you can compare the tone directly. I just improvised a little bit and the playing isn´t always perfect, but I want you to show how a dyno rhodes sounds, since I didn´t find one on you tube yet ....

    The Dyno My Rhodes actually started with Earth, Wind & Fire's Larry Dunn who was the piano player and musical director of the band. He said in an interview( Down The Rhodes : Larry Dunn ) the night before they recorded "Brazilian Rhyme"( on the All n' All album, 1977 ), he had the 88 Rhodes, and didnt like what it was giving out, so what he did the night before( quoting "which was idiotic but it worked" ), he went in and took off all the tips so the wood would hit the tines. So it gave him that sound he wanted but he knew he couldn't keep it that long cause it would eventually destroy the instrument so eventually he had to put it back lol. You can hear the Rhodes like this also on Runnin'...even on the 1980s album FACES.

      So, what specifically does the Dyno retrofit add to make up for it?

      Not what the DynoMyrhodes company said, at all.

    Brent Mydland from the Grateful Dead used a dyno-ed Rhodes piano during shows from '79 - '81. He set it up so that the Rhodes tone sounded almost like a vibraphone! I don't know what it is, but I love the Rhodes sound. Great playing pachlar.

    That chorus makes an insane amount of difference, great sound and great playing.
    Thanks for sharing

    @NewShimmer Second part. The pickups are moved in so as to be closer to the tines and provide a more dynamic touch. Dyno-My-Piano also developed their own chorus and tri stereo tremelo units that were also mounted in the piano. The whole thing was run by a power supply that was installed into the bass cheekblock of the keyboard. They also modified the lid of the Rhodes so that the part over the keyboard came off but the rest stayed and was used a support for other keyboards.

      hey do you have any info on the tri chorus? it looks like 3 ce-2 but with 3 companders(570)

    @NewShimmer Part Four. Now here the kicker...in the early 80's the Samson company that made wireless microphones, built an active electronics, battery powered, preamp that replaced the controls in a Rhodes. It did pretty much the same thing as the DMP preamp. In the late 70's and early 80's I worked on Rhodes pianos and installed several of these. I have one in my Rhodes that still sounds fantastic to this day. The cost of the ubnit was $119 and it sounded just a good.

  • @Keyboardman88
    @Keyboardman88 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @NewShimmer First, there is a special active electronics preamp with Treble/Bass cut and boost as well as volume that replaces the stocl passive volume and tone controls. The the escapement adjustment and overtones are adjusted so that the tines are set at the optimal point ( 1/2 pure to 1/2 overtones) so that the preamp can control the overall range of sounds. There is also a pronounced treble boost and clarity.

    Thank you for the video. It illustrates the effect well and your playing is very inspirational and evocative. I recently bought a Rhodes because the sound makes me happy like nothing else I've ever encountered and I don't even know how to play it yet. My goal is to be able to play the way you do.

  • @Keyboardman88

    @NewShimmer Third. There were other options available such as knee lever under the piano that would be used to shift the position of the harp so there was an alternate striking line of the hammers on the tines. Back in the early 80's the cost of the basic DMP modification - preamp and setup - was around $600-$800..plus you had to pay shipping to and from California for the piano. Very expensive. ( continue to part four of my post to you.

    Back in the day players were doing anything imaginable to cultivate a different sound out of an already great instrument. Using a phaser for effect was very popular as was setting the keyboard to chorus. I have several tines presets on my Casio WK-200 that I enjoy playing around with. 😎🎼🎵🎶🎹

    simply amazing!!!!!!! i love "dyno my piano"
    this is what i have done with my roland jazz chorus and setting the pickups distance by the tines of my rhodes mk2... similar but not really "dyno" :-)

    I had a dyno my piano installed on my 88 in 1980 by "the" guy in San Francisco. The place was in South of Market.. Sold it a few years later.

    The Chorus is actually a Boss ce -2 mounted to the inside of the name rail.

    • @theunionbeats1
      @theunionbeats1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats not a ce-2 boss... ce-1 would be my guess

      Don't they all have a common genealogy to the JC120 chorus?

    • @omarcusihuaman4261
      @omarcusihuaman4261 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes it is actually a ce-2 board mounted on the rhodes, ask the guy to take pictures of the inside and you will see

    If you want an even better pre amp sound go with a "rhodesman" pre amp. It has four stacked knobs that replace the original volume and bass boost knobs and sounds fantastic.

    You can purchase a state of the art, rack mount Tri Stereo Chorus from Fulltone.com It is being sold as a guitar effect..., but it's still the real deal. Probably one of the best effects for keyboard and guitar on the planet. They are not cheap, but then what is cheap when it comes to tone?

    So all that goes into the Dyno-Rhodes sound is the preamp? I thought that it was something to do with the hammers, kinda like people dope the hammers on an acoustic piano to get a brighter sound out of it.

    Nice man!! What chorus have you built in your rhodes??
