Nice work & information. Haven't done one of these yet. Maybe I'll try it with one of my deer (haven't mounted anything for myself in ages😂) Some ladies that don't like shoulder mounts in their house, don't mind one mounted with background scenery. It makes the deer look nicer & prettier,I guess. Little things like that can make a difference
Do you have a video on how you prepared the cape and the head? As someone who has never done taxidermy, I want to try to do one of these myself. I just looked at your about me section and see your in north Alabama, I might reach out to you to get a price on one of these! If it’s cheaper than a shoulder mount then this might be the better alternative to shoulder mounts.
It is tanned and the head mounted exactly like a shoulder mount on a foam replacement head then the cape is rolled up. It is a hundred bucks cheaper than a shoulder mount.
So, for my first stab at this, I think I may try a pack mount. Do you use a change out head for this? If so, could you recommend a brand/style. Also, there are so many eyes to choose from I could use some advice there as well.
I like a Mears change out head ordered directly from Ben Mears in Mississippi. They are my favorite. If you want some great cheap eyes, get Payer unbanded dark and if you want something fancy, get Joe Meder liquid lens whitetail eyes in medium. You'll just have to make sure to get 30 or 32mm depending on what size head you order. (Most common will be 32mm)
Fake deer head now that is messed up lol thanks for the vid I want to make my own mount and I'm posable thinking about the pack mount I figure I have no clue what I'm doing and worst case it will just look more dead 😂 might just throw a shed antler or 2 on thaire with the deer , I know the thought blew my mind as well lol thanks for the vid I had honestly never herd of a pack mount befor today
Yes you can buy just the head. It is called a replacement head. Some taxidermists will use their favorite brand head on a different brand form to get the look they want.
I'm doing my first pack mount right now. Customer wants the mount to have the hide rolled up with the tail hanging out, so I have the whole thing here tanned, in house with pro 1 products. How would you roll it up so that the tail hangs out without detaching the head section from the cape? Looks like here that you have it all as one cape. Secondly, is it necessary to use the whole cape? My plans are to let it start drying after mounting the head and leave it spread out for a day or two before rolling up. Any advice here?
really just debating on hacking off the cape as if it were a shoulder mount and roll it up. without cutting the head from the rest Im not sure how you'd do it. and then what do you do with the open neck?
I do cut the head off and leave about a foot of cape or so to tuck behind the roll. Also, I like to use the whole cape because it makes a nice large roll but make sure as it dries to stretch and break it so it can be rolled once it is dry
@@thecedarridgechronicles ok awesome. so you literally cut the head off like a foot below where the form stops? do you roll it into the hide or just tuck it behind the rolled cape?
This is a great idea and yes does look awesome but i just had to say ... That is alot of rope i dont know what it is but i just cant get past that fact maybe if you use smaller diameter rope it wouldn't stand out as much i just feel you rope just draws the eye
Tongue hangin' out / blood on the face sometimes just feels tasteless to me. Like even when I take pictures of myself with deer in the field, tuck the tongue back in. Take your photo and keep as much blood out of it as you can. Same with taxidermy. Your pack mount looks amazing @TheCedarRidgeChronicles!
That’s why I can’t find a size 44 belt at Walmart. All the taxidermists are buying them to make pack mounts😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@thecedarridgechronicles very nice work 👍🏻
Outstanding
Thank you
After you complete the head, what is the best way to dry the cape before rolling up to place on the frame?
I hang mine and run a dehumidifier
Is it possible for a start to finish video of a pack mount?
Yes I have one tanning I’m going to video!

@@thecedarridgechronicles do you have a website or some way to be contacted? Are you a taxidermy shop or just like doing it for friends and family?
Yeah I am a full time taxidermist. My Facebook business page is Cedar Ridge Whitetails Taxidermy.

Very nice
Do you tann your hide or can you just flesh out and use dry preservatives to dry out
You can do either. I tan mine
Awesome!

Is there a form for just heads or do you cut a neck mount?
Yes you can buy just the head. It is called a replacement head. Some taxidermists will use their favorite brand head on a different brand form to get the look they want.

and do you sew up the neck hole then or not?
@dereksunday3883 I card it so it stiffens up flat then I put the cape roll on top of it and tie it all together
Where do you get your cape hangers from?
McKenzie taxidermy supply
Them guys need new wives lmao
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is it possible to convert a shoulder mount into a pack mount?
You can saw the head off and use it, you’ll just have to get a tanned hide to roll up underneath
This is a great idea and yes does look awesome but i just had to say ... That is alot of rope i dont know what it is but i just cant get past that fact maybe if you use smaller diameter rope it wouldn't stand out as much i just feel you rope just draws the eye
I use the larger because everyone else uses the small. Gives me a different look so I create my own brand that some folks prefer 👍

Your telling me you don’t tan the hide
😂 that head is already tanned and mounted. Please don’t make a raw one 🤣
@@thecedarridgechronicles but your letting the juices leak out was just curious. Would never make a raw one
