It also has regen braking, so no replacing brakes. Oh, and you can't forget about the EV rebates, which decreases the price of one of these by a considerable amount. It does have drive modes. I have the new XC60, and it also comes with launch control when in power mode. Power mode is good fun, and everything gets tightened up and way more responsive.
I have an S60 T8 Inscription plug-in 2020 model and it has drive modes and tons of features this one here in the video doesn’t seem to have. It’s my baby, love the car so much it’s made me a Volvo fanatic for life.
8:39 It always surprises me that PHEVs aren’t more popular. For me, it seems like the best of both worlds and a no-brainer; you get the benefits of an electric car for most daily driving, along with no range anxiety for longer trips. I would like to think that if I was in the market for a new car, a PHEV would be at the top of my list.
Btw that bump in the middle seat legroom is the direct consequence of Volvo's decision to house the battery for the electric powertrain beneath the middle console. By doing this Volvo doesn't sacrifice any cargo space by adding a chunky battery in the boot (as can be found in certain Mercedes hybrids). Thought it might be interesting to know:)
Volvo is a car specific to ones character. Its doesnt have RGB lights, oversized infotainment, crackling exhaust etc. I got mine (2019) full gas because i wanted an introductory luxury car, but i didnt want a car i would see 100 times while im driving. Its casual but nice. And its safe.
9:29 There’s a Polestar Performance option when that you turn on via the vehicle settings in the infotainment system. The new 2023 infotainment system is set up differently than the previous model years and all functions are turned on/off through the settings menu. There isn’t a scroll wheel any longer next to the start/stop switch. However, I noticed that engaging Polestar Performance was much more noticeable than the previous “dynamic” drive mode. It’s nice to see a Volvo that’s effectively a sleeper car again! I miss passing surprised people in my old inline six V60.
I'd much rather have a plugin hybrid. 30 miles of range is all I need to commute daily without using any gas and then I don't have to deal with the inconvenience of road tripping a full EV when I take trips. For me, a plugin hybrid is ideal and will likely be my next car purchase though that is a few years away. If I were buying right now I would be looking hard at the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe but I would give this a look as well. I really prefer the driving experience of a sedan or coupe to an SUV so I'm going to be cross shopping lots of different plugin hybrids when the time comes to buy.
I've heard someone say that they got over 2700 miles on a single tank of gas just because of the pure driving mode, yes there are drive modes, you just didn't find them. They mostly drove electric and only used the engine when necessary. The car also comes with regen braking so even more power to the battery and you never have to replace your brakes. Plus the EV rebates and this car actually has a LOT of bang for the buck. It's my personal fav at the moment. It's got everything I want.
These shifters are great they have a cool quirk where if you live in a hot climate the glue that holds it on comes undone after 3-5 years of summer sun hitting it and it comes off in your hand!
Actually Doug it does have a Sport mode. But Volvo got rid of the physical button for it (a mistake to me) and hide the digital ones for it. You have to swipe right on the main screen now, the different drive modes are randomly thrown on that screen now and take a few extra press to activate compared to the old physical button
Volvo hid the drive modes in the menu which is really dumb, but if Doug had found them I'm sure he would have given the car an extra couple points in fun factor (with the power mode). Also I think the practicality should be higher than all the electric cars, because it lets you have an electric car essentially while removing any range anxiety.
definitely, on a hybrid like this it doesnt really matter, if your battery dies, it will recharge with regenerative breaking and the car still gets decent mpg when just using the gas engine.
We have one (s90 but same concept)and I’m glad Doug understands it’s not trying to be sporty we use it for very long work related trips driving all across Europe and it’s very comfortable and if you need to overtake somebody you can, the tradition of sleeper Volvo sedans/wagons continues
The black version of this car almost looks like a muscle sedan. I like it. Too bad Doug did not see the drive modes -- he should've tested the Power Mode. It's really quick in a straight line - 4.3 seconds (!) - although this is not meant to be a cornering machine. It's simply a quick, comfortable cruiser that Volvo is known for.
I'm surprised that Volvo didn't send him the Polestar engineered S60/V60 recharge for this review. Its a huge bump up in price but completely overhauls the handling of the car.

Hey Doug, you missed out on the Drive modes, done through the gear icon in the screen. If you had selected Power Mode, you would have been totally blown away by the performance. These recharge cars transform completely in Power Mode into total monsters.
I am having a 2021 model V60 T8 with the 11 KwH battery. In winter maybe 20 miles, in summer about 30 miles if i drive energy consious. Consumption varies, on average 45 miles per gallon (1 ltr per 20 km), but i manage also 67 miles per gallon (1 ltr per 30 km). Towing a caravan of 1800 kg was only 16 miles per gallon (1 ltr for 7 km) though.
I want one so bad. I had a P3 S60 with the T5, and loved it. This absolutely keeps together the mantle of that car, and I like the styling, interior, and plug-in. If I had a standard commute, I’d pick one up in a heartbeat. Plus it beats out the German competition in terms of fancy cruise control and price.

The "Most powerful Volvo ever made" it is not, unless the rare 500hp S60 Polestar from the early 2010s doesn't count. Speaking of that particular Polestar, it would make for a super cool review to watch!
the lack of a link to the full review of the S60 (1:40) is very unfortunate. There are never any links to the videos Doug mentions during his reviews, which is always very frustrating
Yes, a 240, 740 or 940 Those are my favorite cars from Volvo. I don't care about the new ones. You can't beat the boxy beauty of a 740 wagon with 4 sealed beam headlights.
Actually looks good. I like Volvos...in and out, however their infotainmemt system needs a major update. It is very out dated, good that they finally put Google Maps on it though.
As someone that has a Clarity PHEV in a very wintery state, I’d love to have AWD. But the RAV4 Prime is damn near impossible to find, I’m not sure if I trust a Outlander PHEV because jatco transmissions, and I drive enough every day that a model 3/y wouldn’t cut it. I also love sedans so this car seems like the perfect fit for me. Toyota really fricked themselves by not making the new Prius Prime AWD even when the non-prime Prius can be had as AWD 😤😤😤
It’s funny that I see you driving through the same highway I take every morning to go to work. Going through La Jolla / UTC on the 5 from Sorrento Valley. Passing the WeWork building and Elsa’s castle.
I think Doug often forgets about the european and chinese market, where indeed many sedans are sold and therefore very popular. Just because americans are often tending to buy SUVs instead, it just makes sense for car manufactures to produce sedans as well because of these other big markets!
This sells very well in Europe and here plug-in hybrids are hotter than EVs. They fit the regulatory environment and allow the manufacturer to build more electrified models. This is important for keeping the average fleet CO2 down.
Love this gen of S60, i remember when it came out, my mate was a car journalist and i got to drive it for some time. Huge fan of the looks and the feel of this car.
Doug PLEASE don't describe premium brands car models as "luxury" cars. If this Volvo is a "luxury", what is Rolls-Royce, Bentley, MB Maybach, etc ? Luxury is another level.
5:57 I feel like that would annoy me. If I wanted to put something there I could just stick a little piece of tape there but if I didn't then there wouldn't be that little thing which seems annoying. I wonder if it would be harder to tint the windsheild with that there too
I like it, a long range, efficient , comfortable, decently fast sedan that isn’t $100k with some nice tech. Volvo was one of the original “large infotainment” brands but has been eclipsed by others with full dash screens. Can’t wait to pickup one of these cheap off a lease!
One thing to be mindful of is the quality of Volvo cars isn’t what it used to be. I recently recommended a Volvo to a friend and within 5 months the car has been 3 times to the dealer for repairs. :/
That's been Volvo for a long time now. The same thing is true of some of the P2 cars, those are from 1999 to 2007. Volvo reliability is hit or miss for decades. But if you get a good one, they're no different than other Volvos, just better looking, safer and more refined.
@@melissasmess2773merger with GM? Ford owned Volvo through the early 2000’s and then sold them to Geely, which is still the majority stake holder to this day.
The S60 T8 used to have the electric, turbo AND a supercharger. I am surprised the deletion of the supercharger didn't get a mention. As for PHEVs, I have one and I like sedans, so I have been seriously considering the S60/S90. However, having heard how one has to dig into the system to find/use various settings is disappointing. Especially considering how a lot of that can be avoided by including physical buttons/switches for commonly used things.
If I was in the market for a new car this would definitely be a contender. In northern Canada there isn't a lot of charges on the highway so you still need gas but for a small town the 40(65 km) mile range is more then enough for a day or 2 of in town driving.
Does foam engine cover thing only protect a pedestrian if you hit them with your hood up? I guess that's cool, since driving with the hood up probably ups the odds of hitting someone.
The reason why other car makers have massive front grills is to create an air gap between the hood and the engine for better impact absorption for pedestrians. Having a foam engine cover does the same thing but allows the hood to sit closer to the engine so the grill doesn’t have to be so large. This is a great idea.
@@vladdutz20 I mean, yes his reviews are entertaining and quite quirky (I watch nearly every single one of them). But it’s nowhere near a good researched review…
This is my dream daily driver. The fact that is is a plug in hybrid is a big plus. The battery is smaller and this more eco friendly and cheaper to replace.
PHEV in ontario (canada) is the way to go imho. the charge network's rubbish and the cold saps EV range in the winter anyways. I just wish more PHEVs were closer to 80km electric range, like the volts of old, and charged faster than 3.7kw. the volvos top out at 3.3kw IIRC.
7-11KW would be nice, so the battery is charged in less than a hour if you want to. And 80km is a bit overkill, maybe. But I see your point, ensure range in the winter for 50km, and open up more possibilities, as well as so the battery isn't cycled as deep..
Many plug-in hybrids in Europe have range of over 100km. It has become the new standard. Seems like they’re not really sending those models to NA. They’re built for the EU regulatory environment
@@AlldaylongRock In Europe we have MB C300e, C300de, GLC400e, GLE350de, BMW X5 45e, 745e, Range Rover and RR Sport P400e. Those are some examples of many models.
trivia: i own the #14 OG polestar. when volvo was just testing the waters for a more performance based brand, they released only 50 S60s in australia with the 'polestar pack' to test the waters. needless to say, it caught on :)
This Volvo looks more like a Polestar than it does a traditional Volvo. I like it but if they ever release an alternate Polestar model of this then it might get confusing.
The little clip behind front windshield is very useful in Europe where in cities you need to pay a yearly parking subscription. You stick a subscription card there and you don't need to worry about it.
Really fan of Volvo but their prices lately are a problem. I wanted a fully equiped XC90 or V90 but for 100K $ I prefered a 2018 Tela Model X P100D with Supercharger for free.
@@ItReallyIsiPOD I have to agree. Tesla's quality, solidity, refinement isn't on the same level as Volvo. Their tech is much better but for me a car has to get the fundamentals right and that's build, quality, decent NVH levels.
Pedestrian safety requirements dictate a certain level of impact absorption between the hood and engine. Foam is a great alternative to the air gap that most manufacturers use.
Twenty years ago it was cool to have a start button instead of twisting a key. Now it's cool to have a start button that you twist instead of pressing. In another twenty years we'll come full circle and it will be cool to have a key you stick in the ignition and twist!!
The most annoying thing about this car is that in the United States only the base trim will qualify for the Federal EV tax credit. If you want any kind of self-driving with the mid-level trim, you're literally $45 above the $55k limit for the tax credit and SOL. This is before any additional options. Personally, I wouldn't go PHEV unless I had some sort of driving assist, so Volvo seriously needs to lower prices on the mid-level trim if they want to be competitive in this segment.
I think Doug forgets that there is the S60 Polestar. That's the one for the extreme cornering and more performance and handling. It has the Brembo brakes and manually adjustable Ohlins shocks as well. That's the sporting one. The S60 he is driving is a fast cruiser.
Like the other person said, there's the v60 although they are pretty rare and you most likely have to custom order it from a Volvo dealer, you could also upgrade the a v90 for one that is a bit larger

Powerful Plug-in hybrids have been a thing in Europe for a while. Only way we actually get powerful cars besides electric. BMW 545e got 394hp. Stage 1 tune will increase it to nearly 600hp

AND THE 4.5 second 0-60!!
I also just really love the look of everything. The interior and exteriors are both beautiful.
This is probably my dream car now lol
It's perfect in every way. I can't believe how underrated these are. They're pretty reliable, too. I still see old Volvos on the road which is a good sign.
It does have drive modes. I have the new XC60, and it also comes with launch control when in power mode. Power mode is good fun, and everything gets tightened up and way more responsive.
I have the same model in this video does that have the launch control you are speaking of?
I have an S60 T8 Inscription plug-in 2020 model and it has drive modes and tons of features this one here in the video doesn’t seem to have. It’s my baby, love the car so much it’s made me a Volvo fanatic for life.
8:39 It always surprises me that PHEVs aren’t more popular. For me, it seems like the best of both worlds and a no-brainer; you get the benefits of an electric car for most daily driving, along with no range anxiety for longer trips. I would like to think that if I was in the market for a new car, a PHEV would be at the top of my list.
EV zealots hate on them. That, alone, greatly increases the stature of the average PHEV, in my eyes.
PHEV is very popular in my country, Finland 🤔
He has been teasing that Mitsubishi Galant for almost a month now....I'm still eagerly waiting for that review.

@brianeugenelee I bet you also all car manufacturers to shut down, so no new cars in 2024 model year.
Aside from the car and it being a Volvo, I love how they still have the map/ parking pass holder like they have in my 96 Volvo!😊
I think this type of car is still really practical at a time when charging infrastructure is just not there yet.
definitely, on a hybrid like this it doesnt really matter, if your battery dies, it will recharge with regenerative breaking and the car still gets decent mpg when just using the gas engine.
We have one (s90 but same concept)and I’m glad Doug understands it’s not trying to be sporty we use it for very long work related trips driving all across Europe and it’s very comfortable and if you need to overtake somebody you can, the tradition of sleeper Volvo sedans/wagons continues
I remember our Volvo 200 station wagon had that little clip on the windshield. Cool to see they’ve kept it all of this time.
My 850 had it too. Forgot all about it and always wondered what it was for till I saw this video
My 2001 V70XC had it as well, I thought it was something that the previous owner stuck on there so I broke it off 😂
I had a Malibu with that clip. It's like a 5¢ part and it's so useful. Should be standard on all cars.
Reminds me of a Dodge Charger😍
@@cabbie4788 He literally said in the video that he already reviewed an S60 Polestar and in his 2nd More Doug DeMuro channel there's V60 Polestar review too.

who is left that wants this sedan, Hey We are retired and have owned Volvos for years like 40 or more, 244, 760 Turbo, S40 and S60s. we Love our 2018 S60 Polestar and are eyeballing this one for our next Volvo. Its perfect for us as we want to be emission conscience but we can not risk being without power on the highway. And I know Volvo safety Engineering has saved my life long ago. You need to think about the market and include old people, we have money we like safety and power too. The volvo is my wife's car I drive a 2014 Corvette and I want the E Ray!!! We may be old but we are not dead yet! D&M
I ordered one of these last July and expect to take possession next week. Could not be more excited!
My 2005 Saab has the plastic windshield ticket holder too! I always assumed it was because the arm of the rear view mirror is too thick for conventional hanging parking tags.
My 99 Saab 95 also has it
Every Skoda has that.
I doubt many people buying this are looking for a super sporty driving experience, with a very firm ride, and whipping it around corners. Buyers might be few but I bet they’ll love it.
Those black trim pieces makes it look the entry model and more cheaper.
I disagree looks sporty and mean
The distressed driftwood and wool interior looks much better.
Yep, blacked out poverty spec.
Plus it beats out the German competition in terms of fancy cruise control and price.
that sticker was really funny. i know doug’s dry sense of humour doesn’t always come across well but he seems to be a genuinely happy-go-lucky kind of guy
The "Most powerful Volvo ever made" it is not, unless the rare 500hp S60 Polestar from the early 2010s doesn't count. Speaking of that particular Polestar, it would make for a super cool review to watch!

He had the Polestar Volvo s60 at the top of the Doug score list.
Polestar with 500 hp was never for sale
Would be nice for Doug to review a Volvo from era (P2 platform S/V60...) ... that 500hp S60 would be an ultra rare quirky one for sure!
I just picked up my 2023 S60 Recharge Polestar edition. I love it!
These new Volvos are some of the best looking sedans on the road!
the lack of a link to the full review of the S60 (1:40) is very unfortunate. There are never any links to the videos Doug mentions during his reviews, which is always very frustrating
Doug can you do reviews on older volvos
Yes, a 240, 740 or 940
Those are my favorite cars from Volvo. I don't care about the new ones.
You can't beat the boxy beauty of a 740 wagon with 4 sealed beam headlights.
He should try to find a 262c 😊 oh so quirky...
@Brian Lee its pronounced di-sell
I'm shocked Doug didn't find the drive modes. He finds all the quirks and features and didn't find that.
Hi Doug, I would like you talk about wind noise specifically for each review while you do a test drive. Thank you
Still has one of the most attractive Stoplights in the car industry.
The whole car is one of the most attractive out right now, at least in my opinion (as well as the V60 and S/V90, especially those wagon variants)
I like it. It serves a purpose and it looks better than it’s rivals imo.
Foam engine cover so pedestrians wont get injured as much if you hit them? How about not driving around with your hood up?
Actually looks good. I like Volvos...in and out, however their infotainmemt system needs a major update. It is very out dated, good that they finally put Google Maps on it though.
Yes, it's nice that (foreign) tech giant can monitor every move you make.
Agree, the infotainment and decade old interior is holding it back for sure. That screen quality and UI is just not acceptable at this time or price.
The EX90 is the update. It's already been updated but I guess Volvo will try to get some of the glitches out (and introduce more glitches).
I think Doug has a secret hatred of Volvos . This is a nice car.

This is the confirmation to get an s60, was looking at this exact model to upgrade from my 2007
As someone that has a Clarity PHEV in a very wintery state, I’d love to have AWD.
Plus, contrary to popular belief, not EVERYONE wants an SUV or crossover.
In reality, the NA market is quite small. Still producing cars for the billions of people outside of NA isn’t a bad idea.
This sells very well in Europe and here plug-in hybrids are hotter than EVs. They fit the regulatory environment and allow the manufacturer to build more electrified models. This is important for keeping the average fleet CO2 down.
how would foam on the engine be for "pedestrian safety"?? are you supposed to drive around with the hood open??
The car has driving mode in the menu, how could you have missed it? Before, there was a knob at the gear lever, now it is moved to the menu.
How often do you need to do an oil change on these plug in hybrids? Barely using the engine if you’re just doing daily city commute
Love this gen of S60, i remember when it came out, my mate was a car journalist and i got to drive it for some time. Huge fan of the looks and the feel of this car.
i love it when you see dougs car in the background he came to film the review with like in the Van-Video.
@Main-Doug_DeMuro your welcome
Doug PLEASE don't describe premium brands car models as "luxury" cars. If this Volvo is a "luxury", what is Rolls-Royce, Bentley, MB Maybach, etc ? Luxury is another level.
Exactly, Toyota has luxury trim levels like this this is a luxury brand too.
5:57 I feel like that would annoy me. If I wanted to put something there I could just stick a little piece of tape there but if I didn't then there wouldn't be that little thing which seems annoying. I wonder if it would be harder to tint the windsheild with that there too
Tinted windshield is illegal and that holder is very common in Europe. Not just in Volvos
Here in Sweden kombis and sedans are still very popular. SUVs are as well but not even close to as popular as in the US
People still drive sedans in the USA. Doug is exaggerating saying that they don't have some appeal here.
The merger with GM can't possibly have helped Volvo quality💩

@@mikojarvinen6273 100km? In not aware of such models. The typical seems something around 60-70km maximum.

Oh good lord. Tesla has Dacia level build quality. It's an insult to Volvo to even talk about them in the same comment section.
@@ItReallyIsiPOD I have to agree. Tesla's quality, solidity, refinement isn't on the same level as Volvo. Their tech is much better but for me a car has to get the fundamentals right and that's build, quality, decent NVH levels.

Foam engine cover for pedestrian safety? What, if you're driving with the hood removed?
Pedestrian safety requirements dictate a certain level of impact absorption between the hood and engine. Foam is a great alternative to the air gap that most manufacturers use.
Doug is the type of guy to review Volvo's Black edition in a white one
Twenty years ago it was cool to have a start button instead of twisting a key. Now it's cool to have a start button that you twist instead of pressing. In another twenty years we'll come full circle and it will be cool to have a key you stick in the ignition and twist!!
The most annoying thing about this car is that in the United States only the base trim will qualify for the Federal EV tax credit. If you want any kind of self-driving with the mid-level trim, you're literally $45 above the $55k limit for the tax credit and SOL. This is before any additional options. Personally, I wouldn't go PHEV unless I had some sort of driving assist, so Volvo seriously needs to lower prices on the mid-level trim if they want to be competitive in this segment.
v informative, thanks!
That’s utterly stupid. Cmon Volvo. Just lower the price by $46 and we’d be all good.
I bet the dealers have the discretion to sell you the cars at a $46 discount if it comes to that
