  • In this video I show how I used AMT's C-series stake truck to re-create Corgi's iconic Holmes Wrecker in 1/25 scale. Lots of scratch building. Turning Ford's C-series into a H-series, just like Ford did it. (kinda!)

Wow, such an outstanding custom build ! I have several of these Corgi wreckers in my collection. Perhaps the most detailed working toy tow truck produced in die-cast.
    Great work 👍

Hello Dan, Back in the early 70's I drove one of those "TWO STORY FALCONS" and it had the Cummings 220 non turbo diesels with a 10 speed Road Ranger trans. What a dog it was, couldn't get out of its own way and the steering was really sloppy. It was a 2 axle tractor with a "Jo-Dog" it attached to the 5th wheel and had it's own 5th wheel and set of duels. this is so we could haul a 40 foot trailer instead of doubles.
I was coming out of Coalinga Calif one time and the air brakes failed. I managed to get it stopped just as it crested the freeway overpass. I set the parking brakes and walked back to the trailer to see if a hose was loose. Just as I stuck my head between the rear trailer bogies I heard a hiss then the brakes let loose and the darn truck started down the hill by itself! I ran like crazy and jumped up on the cab ladder and climbed into the cab where I was able to make a hard right into a field where it finally stopped.
My afterthought was I should have let it go down the hill to crash and burn but I didn't.
I drove it for a while after it was repaired then they got a new Freightliner cab over with a V-8 Detroit, that was a nice truck, even had A/C and a CB radio. It could fly down the freeway with ease.
You brought back memories with the "TWO STORY FALCON" and that's what we called them among other thins like a piece of, well you know what! It wasn't one of Fords better ideas for sure! Nice model, you sure know your trucks.
I''m building the same kit only the long bed as a flat bed tow truck with a stinger. I lengthened the bed in the rear and made the flat bed roll. I added a PTO and parts of the AMT Fire Truck along with the wheels as the Bud wheels look better. I will post it some day on my account so you can see it.
    Keep the shinny side up.
    Radioactive Larry

radioactivelarry Thanks for commenting! I'm glad you shared your 'Two Story Falcon' story with us! From what I've read drivers had love/hate relationships with them. (I'll bet more haters) By the early 70's that truck must have been worn out. I hope you enjoy your C-series build. I don't know what l will do with my second kit cause they were used for so many cool things!

Excellent, I got the corgi for Christmas 🎄 probably about 1970, still got it in reasonable condition, a real quality toy.

Awesome job Dan! I'm working on my own scratch built Holmes model, a 1/25th scale Holmes 750 mounted on the Peterbilt 359 chassis.

Beautiful result from all your hard work. You succeeded in getting a more realistic look on this one than on the Corgi model, although being a Corgi collector I also appreciate the Holmes wrecker they made. I do like the towing booms on your 1/25th model. Thanks for the video!

Enjoyed the video emensily, I hace "code 3" several corgi & Dinky models ie, a ANTAR with holmes gear in military colours, a MACK bogie drive with a holmes gear on, also a TK Bedford with holmes gear on it. I actually uesd a International Acco 6x6 with holmes 650 gear on it in real life in the Australian Army many moons ago, well done & very informative. Thank you. Ron

Nice job making that wrecker! I have a Uncle who used to drive a Chevy cabover wrecker with that same Holmes Boom and the wrecker itself had the Chevrolet gasoline engine ( truck engine) , it looked like a 327 engine but wasn’t i don’t remember the exact c.i. of engine but was like a 200 hp motor with 400 foot lbs of torque! I loved that old truck but I like yours too!

you did an awesome job on that Wrecker. i wonder if AMT would do a collab in the future to replicate the Holmes wrecker?

The H Series was indeed a C Series mounted high up ...... on a modified N Series that many miss. The N Series was styled along the same lines as the Ford Falcon .... hence the name "Two Storey Falcon".

The Corgi die cast toy would only be available on the second hand collector's market. Probably pretty expensive for a good example. The C-series Ford model is by AMT and is still (late 2018) fairly available, but then you still have to modify it. Good luck.
