Sadly, there aren't any real consequences for crimes of nearly ANY kind--not even heinous ones. California law states that theft is “grand theft” when "the money, labor, or real or personal property taken is of a value exceeding $950". But grand theft is a bit interesting in Cali; a prosecutor COULD charge the offense as either a misdemeanor or a felony. But typically, they end up as misdemeanors. And the point is, as long as you rip off values less than $950, you're basically golden. Very little (if anything) will happen. Repeat offenses do not "stack", either. A person could commit an ENDLESS amount of crimes, and the possible punishments would remain weak, unchanged, and essentially NBD nothing-burgers. ;)
Therefore, until or unless CA laws (and NATIONWIDE LAWS) end up completely revamped into some kind of "three strikes and you get incinerated" kind of system... ummm... yeah. Good luck preventing crim-crimz from crimmin' it up! #LMAO!!! It pays to rip off ~$500-900 every few days. It adds up! And even if ya get caught after 20-30 scores... well, you're already fairly wealthy, so whadda YOU care?! LOLOL

Making a proposal like this is so pathetic. In countries in Europe I can go through self checkout with wine or beer no problem. But not in nanny state America! The real problem here is the weak laws, soft DAs, and the retailers themselves that refuse to hire security and/or prevent their loss prevention staff from doing anything and also low staffing at the checkouts to begin with. If people are walking out with stuff and no one’s noticing, how is that something that needs to be legislated??? Gov. Newsance should dictate how ALL businesses have to be run in California. Why just retail? I mean, with rampant software pirating, surely requiring a minimum number of programmers working at a company will stop it. What about fast food? With all the screw ups the $20/hr employees do, surely requiring franchisees to hire twice as many workers will cut down on screw ups? Insurance companies selling car policies should be required to double up on employees to cut down on insurance fraud. Worker safety of course is the reason...

Most thieves don’t bother pretending to ring items up. They grab a couple items and stuff them in their clothes/bags, or they fill up a cart and push it out the door. They need to stop allowing up to $990 of theft and stop prosecuting or firing employees for defending their store, and in general you should lose your claim to rights when in the act of committing crime. Why can you break into my house and then sue me for cutting your hand on the glass when you broke it and yet I have no rights.

Let's check the 80's and 90's and early 2000's when the idea of self-checkout wasn't even happening. Maybe there were less thefts, and .............the self-checkouts are really a barely new thing happening for the past 15 years or less.
I don't remember the lines being as horrible, in fact, they are kind of the same till now.

Here's a crazy idea. Prosecute all thefts to the full extent of the laws already on the books. No need for more useless laws that only drive up the costs for businesses and customers.

Why dont the have customer sign up with a store card and they have to scan it before self check out...they can charge the customer for the missing items because it will be under their name.
    Or
Borrow laws from other countries...caught stealing..cut off their hand 🤚🏼

HATE self checkout. The machines are always choking, so you've got to wait around for an employee anyway. Some of the grocery stores now think they need have only one REAL checkout line open. And I'm not paid to ring up groceries or bag them, so where's my discount for doing those jobs? Thank goodness for Trader Joe's, which never adopted this nonsense and has human cashiers working EVERY register.

Just encouraging more online shopping you're going to kill the in-store experience. I almost exclusively shop online now because they started implementing some of this stuff over in my state in the Midwest. I'm not having my time and money disrespected.
Retail theft is not the big deal that they are making it out to be. Regardless these companies can afford it. People who stand up for companies are tools to capitalism and they do not care about humanity. I will never be on the side of companies and I will always be on the side of the consumer. Those CEOs and board members don't need their fifth houses they don't need their third yachts.
