I love your new adventure of doing your version of abstract landscapes. I’m still trying to figure out my style. I don’t seem to think while I’m painting. I just do it. We will see how that works out after 6 months then after a year. Hearing your voice while I’m painting is very calming.
This video was inspiring. You have a nice voice for video. I often dislike the accompanying commentary in many videos, but I enjoyed listening to yours.
I hear you when you talk about the flowing. I was not able in my earlier life to binge create like you were describing, but I can NOW at 72! YAY! Love your channel.
I realize that this video is a year old…but I’ve just discovered you and your abstract art…and i would love to know which of these grid journal abstract landscapes are your faves a year later? I am loving your process…a lot like my own…and am fascinated to hear your transparent assessments as you go. Thanks for being so down to earth and gut-level honest about the struggles. They are real! Love your work, btw. Any more zoom workshops coming up?😘
That’s a great question. I like them all for different reasons. There are a few I like less than the rest (😅), but I don’t have just one favorite. The beauty of grid journaling is that there are so many opportunities for a “win” when you make 9 or 18 of something 🤗❤️ And, as for workshops, YES! New zoom workshops will be coming up in January - registration will open soon. I’ll send the info out via email once enrollment begins. If you’re not on my email list, you can sign up here: www.jackieschomburg.com/signup ☺️
Oh my!! I really loved this. It popped up this mmorning on my feed so have now subscribed. Ive worked on four at a time in my sketch books, but this really concentrates the mind, but has a freeing up feeling as well. Oow the orange was a super addition, in fact all colours that l love. I use my photographs as a guide for my landscapes, but also make notes in a book about what drew my eye to the subject. I dont copy what l see more an expression of what l see. Thank you for sharing your spontaneous journey.....Alioban
Jackie, these grid layouts are PERFECT..., at least to my eyes!! Blow up any one of them and I would proudly hang it in my home!! Thank you so much for sharing this with us!!!! ❤🎉😊🎉❤
Fantastic! I enjoyed the whole thing! I plan to go to my studio and do this exercise! Thank you! You have a calming voice and you did not rush through, I felt like I was in the room doing my. own art with you!
i LOVE your color combo! i've always been drawn to landscapes. i've followed fabric landscape book yrs ago, but they felt stilted. you can do much nore w.paint. i might have to try your technique.
They are great in the closeups. In the actual size they look a bit crowded. The orange really brightened them up and they were great. The blue was a nice addition to the colour palette but I felt it was too much on those tiny pieces.
I love these colors. Yes I like just creating landscape on your own instead of from someone else. These are wonderful. Really enjoy watching your process. Can’t wait to get my color shapers.s instruction
brilliant. love the squares idea. 4 me you can do all the courses and books but u still have to find yr own way. ideas like limiting colour, using certain materials and toolz, limits on time, cutting up painted sheets and finding u have ipso facto created a composition , these r great tricks that move u along satisfyingly fast. value was the best thing i got from being taught and admittedly that is the biggy.
Love this exercise and that pop of blue is fantastic! I might have to try this soon. I have split a page with tape into 4 before but not 9. Thanks for the inspiration. 😍
This has been very helpful and inspiring. I’ve had a landscape in mind and have not been able to decide how to approach it. I forgot all about doing multiple trials as an option to point me in the right direction. Thank you for sharing this! I’m going now to start my own. 👩🏻🎨😊
Wonderful process! The introduction of the orange started to bring it together for me. I have watched a few of these small square compositions and am getting tempted!
I really love this. I'm the same, I'd rather try things first and find my way to do it, maybe then look at others' work/books etc. Do you spend about the same amount of time making these miniature spreads or does it vary? How long do they take for you. I'm very much into doing the art the way I like. All rules go out of the window. I've recently been doing UK A2 size art which I love. It's the largest my desk can accommodate. I'm going to take this idea of the squares but change it up. Using my UK A2 card, draw varying size squares all over the page and fill in in a similar way to you with my own twist. 😊
Hi! I LOVE that you're making this exercise your own! The time I spend on the grids varies wildly! Some I can do in an hour or less. Some take 4-5 hours. I feel like I average about 2 hours for each grid session, but I just stop whenever I feel like stopping. Often I keep working on it because I just don't want to stop ❤️
i love what you've done in this video! the colors are gorgeous! i've dabbled with fabric landscapes; now i need to try it with paper, in an abstract way. cynthia
These turned out great and the colors are beautiful together. I painted a few abstract landscapes after watching a few videos. Impossible for me to copy anything so I chose some colors and ran with it. I have no formal art training but the videos helped give me ideas.
More like this please! Will try it this afternoon. Looks like Kelley’s free offering isn’t available today😢that color combination is dramatic and original👍❤️ thank you for sharing with us.
This looked like so much fun, so I will try this idea this afternoon. The palette of colors was really striking and I think I will try the same one. I never would have thought to put these colors together and it looks vivid and engrossing. Thanks for sharing this.
Love this series, it came out beautifully. They feel very different from the paintings you usually do, yet, very much you. Glad that you're feeling better and your voice is back. Till next time.
Thanks Treezy! I agree - very different but still made by me. Nice to know you see it too. And thanks for the well wishes - feeling SO much better. Have a wonderful week and hope to see you live on Wednesday! ❤️
@@jackieschomburgart Happy week to you too. I'm going overseas. departing today, to visit my family after three years of chaos in the world. I won't be on TH-cam as often but I'm looking forward to your next inspiring videos. 😍❤
Love them Jackie, inspiring as always ❤Only those who have made abstract art know that kind of absolute bliss (though looking at it is pretty cool too :) Some of the pieces looked very Rothko-esque before you added a few more elements -- this is definitely something I will experiment with as well (a problem for me, though, is that if I try to do something again it never works -- it seems to be about the process not the result). I confess that I'm a bit dubious about the idea of making an 'abstract' anything, I don't really want to have any kind of a pattern in my head -- but I can see how it could actually help you uncover ways of working that you haven't yet incorporated -- new neural pathways 🏵🌺🌼
❤️❤️❤️ It’s a fun way to experiment with many things quickly! Tell me more about what you mean when you say “if I try to do something again it never works”.
@@jackieschomburgart Hi Jackie -- just that I can never do the same thing twice, when I try to (sort of) replicate something it's never the same (and it's not as much fun) so I don't think I could do the small scale multiples and make any particularly interesting ones again larger -- I may try it though and just see what happens :)
Ahh, okay - thanks for clarifying. I definitely relate. ❤️ Whenever I have tried to replicate something it becomes beyond boring and/or it turns out awful! I don’t know that they would necessarily scale up well. I’m more so using the small grid to try on color combinations and get practice in (in this case, trying out landscapes). If I use them in larger paintings, I’m anticipating using the general shape of a composition here or there. I’m embarking on a new series of ten 12”x12” canvases tomorrow, so stay tuned - we’ll see how it goes! ☺️
Love your process. Is it really an abstract landscape if you're not starting from a landscape? btw. Hansa Yellow is also arylide yellow or monoazo yellow, so this is di-arylide, and di-azotized (i.e. di as in two, not dia as in day).
Thanks so much! As an artist, I think it's an abstract landscape if I decide it's an abstract landscape 😂 There is a continuum of abstraction from completely realistic on one side and completely abstracted on the other. Landscapes can be on one side or the other.... or anyplace in between. I like to think of my abstract landscapes as being much farther on the abstracted side. THANK YOU for the background on the yellows! That's super helpful 🤗

Figuring it out is part of the fun! 🎉 Can’t wait to see your growth! 🖌️❤️
Loved it all. Plan on doing the exercise today . You’re always so encouraging . You have terrific ideas . Thank you for always being real.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching! ❤️❤️❤️
Love it!🎨

THAT WAS MADLY FUN, BUT HOW I WISH I COULD HAVE SEEN A FULL SCREEN SHOT OF EACH FAVULOUS DESIGN. I WANT TO TRY THAT!
Thanks Connie - it really is fun! Try it! ❤️

You’re so right, Robert! And yes, value is HUGE. I feel like I’m still learning more and more about value every time I paint ❤️

It’s funny, you said that the original color pallet was dreary and I liked it. I think my asthmatics is a duller pallet.
It’s great that we each have our own individual color preferences, isn’t it 🤗 Art is wonderfully subjective ❤️
