    Did you see that!!!!??? 8:37 He drags her across the stage while she is locked on point. I don't know the ballet term for her position but she holds it while sliding on the stage. With a perfect head turn. Amazing. Never seen that done before.

      It’s a first arabesque en pointe and as a former ballerina I agree that’s pretty amazing, I’ve never seen that before either. No rosin on those shoes that’s for sure!

      I’ve seen it done in other Nutcracker performances, and even saw a bts TikTok about it - it’s a piece of cardboard or something like it on the stage that the Sugarplum Fairy’s pointe shoe is placed on before the move. You can even see it on the floor during and afterwards if you know what to look for!

    I usually like Russian productions better (Mariinsky & the Bolshoi), but when it comes to The Nutcracker, Balanchine’s version is my favorite hands down. It seems more magical and childlike, and I like that Marie is played by an actual child.

Because I know that some of the "danseuses etoiles" of the Opera de Paris had their nomination as "danseuses étoiles" after this ballet and as Clara, so they were not children ahah

      It's weird cause I see it from 8:08 to 9:29. They included a big full minute of it, considering it lasts 6 minutes (just the pas). If you want to see the full pas just go to see it. Did you read the title? It's a short version, but you're free to do your "Nutcracker in 16 minutes" and include the Pas and watch it by your own.

    I appreciated the captions and explanations, but you kind of fumbled the ending. You described events that happened, sure, but at the end, what was the point? How did her dream end? Why did she dream it? Did her godfather use some kind of magic to make her dream that? Did he do it for good reasons or nefarious ones? Can the message be that dreams, while fanciful, don't reflect real life and that a war between mice and toys mirrors the visceral horror of real life war? Is there some message about togetherness on Christmas?
    What's the actual story here? Is there even one?
    Who cares about a bunch of people dancing if it isn't leading to some moral lesson or evolution of our understanding?
    I guess what I'm asking is the final question, and this may be too big to answer for a small channel on youtube, but is ballet actually pointless in all practical regards, or is it just this one; the highest earning ballet in the world? Are most human beings stupid and incapable of searching for a higher meaning? Is this the pokemon of the ballet world? (Pokemon is also the highest earning franchise of literally every other major franchise you can think of combined, and it's a stupid pointless kids game about enlaving animals to fight in combat.)

    • @lordobvious8458
      @lordobvious8458 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was probably the best schlock you could pay money to see in the 1800s. There were no standards of storytelling back then. "It's a dream!" You shout at me from the comments. So fucking what? I expect care and thought to be put into my entertainment, no matter what genre, or era. The people who wrote this didn't care to actually finish the story. If they did and I just didn't hear about it, and their original story was hijacked by greed and the hedonism of the masses, butchering the point through simplification, then my point about humanity sucking still stands.
      It just annoys me that we, as a culture, are still holding on to what was never really a great production. That the general population would never go for or understand a deeper dive into the exact same topics The Nutcracker only hints at. It's all taken for granted. Or maybe we can just enjoy some dumb, pointless, and unfinished entertainment.

      There’s a big outcry over the Tea aka Chinese Tea scene too! Here in the USA and at the RB in London. They say the negative stereotypes of the pointed straw hat, long mustache and pointed fingers are racist. It’s absolutely ridiculous. It’s all a fantasy! Maybe the marzipans should complain, along with the candy canes, that they’re not to be represented by female (the former) and male (the later) humans.

      @@kat4617 I can’t speak for Gone Fishing regarding the gratuitously unnecessary comment about how many minorities are lining up for ballet tickets. I for one think the remark is in terrible taste. But I will make two comments. Years ago you rarely saw POC “lining up” for ballet tickets or opera for that matter. That’s not the case as much any more cross-cultural exploration of certain forms of entertainment and art appeal to more diverse audiences. However, ballet is a French/Russian tradition and the greatest ballets were choreographed in the nineteenth century. Depictions of the Coffee by a variation with an Arab or harem theme and Tea by stereotypical Chinese representations should not be omitted. (We don’t throw out The Merchant of Venice because it’s a distasteful stereotype of Jews) . Ballet is an old art form, its choreography and the all important mime that goes along with it shouldn’t be changed because of revisionist sensibilities. Then Swan Lake should exist because an unsavory thought that a prince would fall in love with a bird. Or Sleeping Beauty because fathers shouldn’t be marrying off their sixteen year old daughters. Or the incomparable Giselle - which is about dead virgins haunting a forest where a dead young woman dances with a grieving prince. All these stories are outmoded. But there’s nothing wrong with any of it. Why not object to the Nutcracker coming to life and a little girl falling in love with a little boy. There’s always modern ballet and plotless ballets. I think Manon is overtly sexual and if it makes me uncomfortable I wouldn’t watch it.
