VATSIM is such a great place to start - scary at first but very rewarding. The DA40 is great while you're concentrating on Comm protocol. - Enjoy!
Nice to see you flew close to my home island of Puerto Rico! That's an interesting and beautiful looking visual approach for that runway, I'll definitely try that in the sim. That approach was a little hot but that departure was brutal lol, too many heading and altitude changes in a short time.
Thanks so much for watch and flying along. It's getting a little easier but everything me is a bit of a roll of the dice for me. I'm working on editing another one this afternoon.
Really enjoy the flight. The departure from FL Executive was hectic and the approach and landing into Beef Island is unique. Also the controller at SJU Center is remarkable. A true profesional. I am a little bias as as I am a local here in PR. As a side note Beef Island is still challenging but before the runway expansion it was a real challenge doing a smooth flair.
Great comments. FL departure was crazy hectic - I edited out about 40 mins of ground time which was non-stop and you caught some of the active deconfliction until I was clear of most of the training traffic. They San Juan Center controller was so smooth. We left Tortola and flew into Turks & Caicos which was amazing. I'll definitely go back there.
Thanks for sharing! Got engaged at Long Bay! What a dream to fly one’s HJ to the BVI! American just announced TJSJ to TUPJ. That would be better than TIST, van to Red Hook, ferry to West End and Customs twice! Very cool! Time to try this in the sim!
Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. Sailing in the BVIs is amazing and yes, it' really is a dream to be able to fly in there ourselves. Keep me posted on how the sim training is going
Perfect approach... :). My dad told a story where his friend used to have horrible landings until he learned to pull up whenever his instructor started to brace for impact... Every pilot has squirrely landings; it's fun to share them!
I thought the landing was ok...just barely. The approach however, was really bad. The speed brake helped me to recover but turning final High (4 White on the VASI), Wide (overshot the turn to final) and Fast (I was at vRef +20) isn't good.
Happy to be aboard with you on this flight, im a new subscriber and I've visited Tortola BVI many times. I flew in the first time on Amazon Eagle connecting through San Juan and on other visits took the ferry ⛴ out of Saint Thomas. Thanks again and I will be looking forward to your next video.
Oh PLEASE tell me we're allowed typos! I've been intent on replying to every comment - usually from my phone while I'm working. Some of my typos are more cringe-worthy than that last landing!
Thanks so much for watching and for subscribing - still figuring out the TH-cam algorithms but data is trending positively. Beef Island makes it so much easier and it was such a quick flight from Fort Lauderdale.
Don't beat yourself up. We've all then there and done that. Thanks for the fun video and for leaving in the approach. There must have been a crosswind from the right. 😁
Right?! Ignore that windsock I the video. Clearly that was a photo shopped in to make me look even LESS capable. Thanks so much for the virtual pat on the back.
Nothing wrong with that approach. Ok, a little wide and a touch fast, but that's what makes flying fun, right? The scenery was fantastic! And glad to see you have almost mastered the framerate issue. Great video. Keep them coming!
Thanks. Over a week on a sailboat I must have said to my wife 10 times "Wow, I wish I could fly that approach again". So I had to leave it in. Thanks for the comments. Wait to you see the next one. The flight into Turks & Caicos was amazing.
On the 2 GoPro 10s imovedup to 4K and set all of the cameras at 60FPM. It helped. I can still see that the GoPro 9s (not 4K capable) aren't as good. I need to get more memory cards and swap them out inflight. Thanks for noticing. I've been chasing that issue
Awesome video. Challenging approach! Thanks for sharing. Full respect for keeping it real, and including the approach in this video. Greatly appreciated. So many lessons to be learned! :)
Thanks, I'm still learning them. The hard part of watching the unedited tape is that I get to 're-learn' it over and over again. I know what I did - task saturation. But that doesn't keep me from wanting a redo. I'm working on editing another video today with some flying planned this month.
Great video. I just found your channel and subscribed. There is no bad landing when you and your plane are in one piece back on the earth. We all made mediocre landings some times. I love the Honda Jet. Keep up good content with that plane.
Boy would I love to fly in that jet. Looks way cool. The coolest thing I've ever flown was a Navajo. Since I only have one eye my dreams have been squashed.
Absolutely! Great advice. I'd briefed the 'Missed' which has a pretty aggressive turn for terrain avoidance, so with a dry runway, I opted to continue. My next mental check was at 200' agl. If I wasn't stable by then, I was executing the go-around Thanks for watching.
Did that approach from Puerto Rico on a small twin engine prop many years ago. lol pilot didn't look old enough to drive. On that final approach plane was bouncing all over the place. I white knuckled the handle next to me and closed my eyes. Pilot did a fantastic job landed perfectly.
Good day. It was great seeing this. I live in the USVI, on the island of St. Thomas. I am also a private pilot and have flown into Beef Island several times. Of course, our most common way of getting to the BVI is using the ferry.
Sometimes these approaches aren’t perfect because the scenery is so distracting! Beautiful! Thanks for sharing the survival gear, I’m looking into that for a trip to Aruba.
Thanks Pete. I've wrestled with getting my own raft but it seems like too big of a lift for the limited use...especially with the interval inspections. These guys I used were awesome. The other stuff,we'll after all of the military SERE & other survival schools, Im picky. Uncharted Supply is awesome. Light and complete. Please keep me posted on how your planning goes and I definetely want to hear about the flight.
Other comments are true !! Most You Tubers only show their best landings....Thank you for leaving this ''' really acceptable'' one in the video.! Don't be so hard on yourself!!
Thanks for doing the vids - I enjoy watching your fights & the Honda Jet. I am very interested in the instrumentation. More close ups of your inputs would be appreciated... Fly safe

Any time you land safely is a Good Landing in my book!! Enjoyed the video. By the way , enjoyed your video when you came to Charleston with your Daughter. Charleston,SC
Yep, agreed and I'm grateful! The landing was actually OK but the approach was just not acceptable. Bad piloting required me to trade off some skill for a lack of judgment. I should do better.
Flying to the Caribbean is a lot of fun and really easy, most of the paperwork is online and UV Air or World Fuel is accepted everywhere. My last flitght was to Montego Bay from Cancun in a C500. Greetings from Monterrey, Mexico. I'm Jaime or James.
Thanks so much, Jaime. You're correct. I've flown outside the US before but it was all as a military pilot - different rules! 😁 Fuel wasn't too bad at all but the "handlers" at the FBO were a huge (and really expensive) disappointment. You'll have to come back when I post the return flight. We went into Turks & Caicos for fuel - what an awesome place.
Great video. It's very helpful to hear you talk through procedures, but I happen to know you do that all the time. Watching a ground guide run backwards gave me anxiety attack, but that's probably just the guy who was around M1s, M3s, and HEMMTTs at night talking. Keep 'em coming.
Yep, I do like consistency when it comes to flying. It's funny that you picked up on the ground vs military ground guiding. Exactly what I was thinking as we were taxiing. Good thing there weren't any SGMs watching! Also...Let's go flyng
Thanks for sharing. That approach wasn't that bad, I've had worse. I've wanted to do this flight for awhile. I'd be interested in who you used to help with all the documentation. This will be my 1st international flight as well.
Thanks, I do think the landing was ok but the approach was pretty bad. Overshoot the turn to final..my a lot. 4 White on the VASI and about 20 knots fast. I had my hands full fixing all of those vs preparing to land. Had it been raining or a wet runway, I would have absolutely gone around. Maybe I should have anyway. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment
Start your turn earlier when the wind is pushing you wide, and keep your turn continuously in a circle. When you are level before your turn, start to slow down to your first notch of flaps and LDG speed. Look for a landing spot and draw an imaginary line from your jet to that and make your descent down that line.
Think about where your focus was in the visual. If the autopilot was flying the instrument section, that might have contributed. It’s an unusual approach. You did a good job of recognizing and correcting.
Thanks - I did edit out 2 items. 1) the visual approach chart that I showed in the video was in Foreflight but WAS NOT in the G3000. 2) I got an audible LANDING GEAR warning which eventually cleared. Both of these messed with my flow and lead to an unstabilized approach. Thanks so much for watching
That's a great suggestion. I know the Premier 1 Driver has a camera on a tripod that he moves around during his flights. I'll try that. I've pretty much found that during day flights, I can only use the GoPro 10 based on resolution. I'll try it on the next flight.
@@bluemaxsix Yes, the idea is to stream live every single leg. I'm planning legs no more than than 2 hours, except when doing ocean crossings. Big challenge with the flight planning.
Thank you for showing the approach plates so we can follow along. Any solutions to the instrument screens changing colors (blue, green, black)? It'd be great to see what's going on since the HD cams are so clear.
You know, I've been chasng that screen resolution issue for a few months. I think I have it sorted as much as possible now. Of course it takes me weeks after a flight to grt my videos up. So keep watching and keep the suggestions coming!
Appreciate your honesty on that one. Having trained without electronic aids and glass cockpit I sometimes wonder how you guys would cope with catastrophic instrument failure. My most enjoyable flight ever was seat of the pants: compass, tacho & watch only.... to a full stop landing.
Thanks Kyle, it sounds like you and I trained the same way. Since its the mental math that's always attracted me to flying, I totally get what you're saying about the level of satisfaction. You should watch this video where I lost a lot of the 'help' at FL410 and had to hand fly for about 90 mins while descending out of RVSM airspace into IMC/convective. It was a fun flight. th-cam.com/video/HWmHU8Z1484/w-d-xo.html
I really like the incorporation of the Jeppesen charts on the ipad and I still have the additional paper ! (Whew, Heavy !!) but I can't get rid of them .
The glitches that make piloting fun (LOL). Considering that the Honda Jet Elite is the only aircraft suitable for my mission, I have one squarely in sight. The step up from the Cirrus Jet should be a fun one. Coincidentally, I am searching for property on Long Bay Beach, Tortola, it seems we have very similar interests. Great video and thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. The VJ and the HJ are similar in the way they leverage tech. I'll be interested to hear how it goes for you. Both platforms are great. We've really enjoyed it over the past year.
@@bluemaxsix the fact that the Honda jet has a lav and a refreshment center, along with the quietest cabin in the sky, for me makes it the obvious next step. Thanks for your replies.
BTW, I shared your comment about monetizing the channel with my wife. She was funny "1) get busy 2) does he know how private you are about everything?!"
@@bluemaxsix jokingly, I must respond, "But you are on TH-cam!" It can be a fun way to share and for some to make good money. I am aware of some outside of the industry who make millions by simply sharing their adventures. And these folks, some of whom I know, maintain a private lifestyle. They have their stage life (TH-cam) and there private life. In the jet world it is a matter of do you fly to cool destinations that others are interested in? And if you can fly a Honda Jet, you can navigate TH-cam just fine. I hope to hear more from you and I share a laugh with your wife. Keep the blue side up...
Very acceptable. You didn't over bank to correct.. I thought I might want to work for Honda Jet after retiring in 2003, but didn't follow through......wanted to stay in the mountains of NW NC. 26 yrs on the B727. Lots of Carribean and SA flying
Thanks so much. I did edit out a few of th complicating factors that messed up transitioning into the groove, but I thought it was important to show. Had it been raining or a wet runway, I would have gone around for sure. In this case, the wildly well designed speed brake on the HondaJet was my savior. Thanks for watching...we really appreciate it.
Just found your channel and as an aviation geek, I had to follow. Hopefully the issue with the fuel totalizer is just a sensor or a bad connection. Safe travels !
Thanks for showing up. It cleared up. I've had 5 flights since then and no issues. What I s by old habe done was shut down, power down, and restart to make sure it cleared.
Thanks so much. Having great speed brakes made all the difference in salvaging that one. We very much appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Question : most RNAV have FAF in alignment with (in this case ) RWY 7 - I assume you had VNAV engaged AND autopilot so at FAF the jet was configured for landing , at MINS and on VASI AND at VRF + additives So - on speed on final LDG configured You do not explain HOW you got “high /fast / wide? Some of your viewers might want to know WHAT an “RNAV “ approach IS and how it’s helpful for non ILS equipped airfields Anyways if you’re upset at “high and fast “ please explain HOW we GOT there if everything was perfect at FAF on the RNAV RWY 7 ?
Wow Steve, you're REALLY paying attention. Great observations and questions...AND exactly why this approach bothered me so much. So here's the extra detail that fills in a few blanks. The RNAV approach into Runway 7 terminates into a Visual approach. I showed both of the approach plates on the video. The catch is that the visual approach plate is in Foreflight BUT NOT in the G3000. There's a ton of detail in the visual approach - altitudes, speed, visual reference points, etc. When I couldn't pull it up in the Garmin, it threw me a bit. What I should have done was use my experience and just flown the entry, base, and final like I would normally in a visual approach. So as I was turning in (and below the surrounding terrain) I was trying to mentally recall the specifics of the visual approach while flying and completing the checklists. As I was on Base with Flaps - Approach, I put the gear down, and immediately went to Flaps - Landing. The flaps were down before the gear was fully down and locked. When that occurs, the jet sees a miss configuration and I got a LANDING GEAR audible alert with a flashing red gear handle. I need to keep my attention outside and knew I had put the gear down. So I put my hand on the gear handle while looking outside to reconfirm. The alert resolved itself but not before I got out of the groove as you see in the video What I should have done was execute a Go Around. I knew from briefing the approach, that the missed approach had a tight right turn to avoid terrain, so instead I worked hard and used the speed brakes to salvage the approach. To quote/paraphrase Charlie in the original Top Gun - While the landing was successful, I think this is an example of what not to do. I thought long and hard about just editing the whole thing out but that's when I realized that I was only compounding the issue and by leaving it in, I was reinforcing making better and safer decisions in the future.
@@bluemaxsix Blue : thanks for detailed explanation. In 1997 when I upgraded to DC9 Captain off 767 whey REMOVED “ONS “ (low freq) all we had was VOR - we always had to do “drop downs - shoot the VOR or vectors to ILS final . Lots of the VOR were offset from RWY - the FAF “did leave you high and fast I had a nice Captain explain to me (which helped as 757 Ca) “Steve - TERPS constructs ALL “Visual “ published approaches on a 3 degree slope - 10 miles 3,000 feet to commence . “Therefore Steve , you never want to be high and fast in a transport category AC “you can’t get down and slow down “ SO - just hit 10 miles , 3K drop gear and flaps sink about 700FPM Vertical Speed and be ON VREF you’ll nail it every time .” That advice was SO helpful LATER FAA & AA OPSPEC due to accidents said “ on ANY instrument or visual approach you MUST confirm “in landing configuration, on VREF stabilized ‘going through 1,000 feet AFL (AA used Radio Altimiters ) if you don’t meet the criteria it’s a Mandatory “Go Around “ AA SIM teachers would intentionally put pilots out on ILS final a little high and fast to forcr them to make that decision many in desire to “mission complete “ would blow through that hard deck 10+ KTS that was “”he failed that event “ time .
@@stevebelzer4758 I learned in Army aircraft with significantly less capability than you had in the big iron (although we did have Guns, Missiles, & Rockets 😁). Thank you for sharing your flight bag info so pronto 🙏
Hey, my dear Dad always said that "any landing that you can walk away from is a good one". Truly😄 enjoyed the entire video, thanks.
Your Dad is a wise man. Of course I'm still kicking myself that I didn't execute a go-around with such an unstable approach. Won't happen again
Is the Honda Jet that sensitive that you felt the unstable approach was hazardous?
@@petersnelling9047 2 seperate things. The HJ is a solid, capable, and forgiving platform. All unstable approaches are inherently dangerous.
Found this by accident! Superb content and Kudos for keeping it real. As a virtual pilot who's learning ATC communications I learned a great deal so thank you. Looking forward to checking more from the channel.
Great. Thanks so much.
@@ForestForTheTrees3283 British Avgeek does a great 8 part IFR VATSIM Series just completed - 'nuts to soup'. Flight Sim Flyer does a great VFR series too.
Thanks. It was super busy getting out of Fort Lauderdale. The HondaJet wants to climb! Come back and let me know how the approach goes in the Sim.
Thank you for sharing a very cool approach and landing. Virtual pilot here and this has been added to my list of destinations.
That's awesome. I have to find a way to get a re-do. Maybe I'll try out the sim!
I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for taking the time to put them out.
I've had my fair share of bad landings, I know how you feel. Nice video. Thanks for sharing your aviation adventures with us!
Thanks. Greatly appreciated. I sure do miss flying in the Sandhills of NC
No scratches, dings, or dents.... and you walked away. Good landing!
Thanks. The landing was fair...the approach was really bad. Had to trade some skill for some judgment to pull it off. Not good
Thanks for sharing!
Super beautiful approach! Awesome plane!
Stop yelling at me! 😁. Thanks. I'm still not completely over that bad approach.
@@bluemaxsix Loved the vid no matter!!!! Thank you very much for sharing. Much success to ya!
Thanks. Working on another video today
American Eagle was the connection. Please excuse the typo.
Thanks for the great video. It's beneficial for those operating Beef Island for the first time.
Thanks! I STILL want a do-over on that approach though.
Enjoyed the flight as usual. Wonderful scenery at Tortola.
Thanks. Wait until you see Turks & Caicos. Next video. Working on it now
Smiling hard here, with your left hand on the glare screen I keep waiting for the catapult to throw you back in your seat! Great video, thanks!
Good one. I won't mention that's where the Push to Talk is in the HJ and just look for that "OK 3 Wire" from the LSO.
Good stuff. Look forward to more content!
Thanks so much. My wife and I are sitting in London today and wondering about what to work on next.
Waaay better than my approach one Flight Simulator 😅
Excellent approach nice bank right and down we go
Thanks! It was survival but I want a do-over so I can nail it next time.
@@bluemaxsix Keep 'em coming! Excellent content. Thank you.
Working on one now. Thanks
Great to see that you left in the approach… and how not to panic.
Stay calm. Keep flying the Jet. Have a great Speed Brake!
I drove my wife nuts over our week sailing as I kept saying "I want a re-do on the approach"

Thank you so much. We really appreciate that encouragement and your support.

It's still amazing. Turks & Caicos was even more spectacular. Thanks so much for subscribing
Great video. I just found your channel and subscribed. There is no bad landing when you and your plane are in one piece back on the earth. We all made mediocre landings some times. I love the Honda Jet. Keep up good content with that plane.
Thanks. It's fun and I'm enjoying the interaction with the community. I truly didn't expect that - thanks for subscribing
Boy would I love to fly in that jet. Looks way cool. The coolest thing I've ever flown was a Navajo. Since I only have one eye my dreams have been squashed.
Rats. Navajo is a fun one for sure.
I’ve flown into Beef Island many times, but in a DC3. Great video.
I want a ride! That's a dream plane for me.
Always good to be transparent. But remember, every approach is a go-around opportunity!
Absolutely! Great advice. I'd briefed the 'Missed' which has a pretty aggressive turn for terrain avoidance, so with a dry runway, I opted to continue. My next mental check was at 200' agl. If I wasn't stable by then, I was executing the go-around
Thanks for watching.

Did that approach from Puerto Rico on a small twin engine prop many years ago. lol pilot didn't look old enough to drive. On that final approach plane was bouncing all over the place. I white knuckled the handle next to me and closed my eyes. Pilot did a fantastic job landed perfectly.
Hah. I'll bet you were white-knuckling it! The short-run pilot's in the Caribbean are pretty amazing.
Great flight and commentary, thanks for being human Cheers
Thanks so much, that's a compliment I'll be happy to accept. I really appreciateyou all watching and engaging.
Good day. It was great seeing this. I live in the USVI, on the island of St. Thomas. I am also a private pilot and have flown into Beef Island several times. Of course, our most common way of getting to the BVI is using the ferry.
That's awesome. Hopefully you don't get destroyed by the 'Handler Fees' like I did! I learned a ton on this trip.
What do you fly?
@@bluemaxsix Cessna 172. One day I hope to own a Beechcraft King Air.

Sure thing. I'm glad you enjoyed it. We're working on making these better
I miss Tortola. Last time I was there was before the storms raked them.
Nice aircraft. We've all had sporty landings.
Thanks so much for the reassurance. In hindsight, I should have gone around. BVIs are absolutely a special place. I want to try Turks & Caicos next.

Fuel wasn't too bad at all but the "handlers" at the FBO were a huge (and really expensive) disappointment.
Great flight. Little high and hot on short final…but nice job adjusting.
Understatement! Thanks so much for watching. Appreciate the comments.
Enjoyable video, hope to see many more and will be subscribing.
Thanks, Sir. We appreciate it. We've already started working on editing the return trip.
Thanks for sharing. That approach wasn't that bad, I've had worse. I've wanted to do this flight for awhile. I'd be interested in who you used to help with all the documentation. This will be my 1st international flight as well.
Thanks. I feel like I was able to salvage the landing. I edited out a few of the issues that caused me to be high, wide, & fast.
Oh sure, like none of us have EVER done that 🙂 Glad to see someone else do the "Sporty" spproach...
I'm glad I posted it...and get to relive it about 200 times a day.
Any landing is a good one when you can walk away. I really thought the approach was pretty good though...Nice flying Mike
Fighter pilot approach....If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing, as Chuck Yeager used to say! Great video!
Amen, Brother! Thanks so much for watching.
@@bluemaxsix You are welcome! my pleasure...pls keep posting these great videos.

Agree and I do find that watching these and engaging with the community helps keep me learning and improving.
It’s a Honda. It can take anything you throw at it. Good flight!
Yep, it's apparently (almost) Soldier-Proof
Start your turn earlier when the wind is pushing you wide, and keep your turn continuously in a circle. When you are level before your turn, start to slow down to your first notch of flaps and LDG speed. Look for a landing spot and draw an imaginary line from your jet to that and make your descent down that line.
Thanks
Thnx for the 2 angles on the landing.
Thanks. That was my first attempt trying that.
Great videos! Would love to see a closer view of the entire PFD display during different phases of flight (take off, descent etc)
That's a great suggestion. I know the Premier 1 Driver has a camera on a tripod that he moves around during his flights. I'll try that.
I've pretty much found that during day flights, I can only use the GoPro 10 based on resolution. I'll try it on the next flight.
Nice video, I'll start an around the world tour on the Honda Jet in MSFS 2020 this week. Beautiful aircraft.
Thanks so much. That's awesome. Will you post the content anywhere so we can follow along?

Your VLOG's are fantastic keep showing the use of the iPad that's easier then pen & paper . I have used both
Hey thanks. I have found the iPad with foreflight to be awesome and effecient in the cockpit.
I really like the incorporation of the Jeppesen charts on the ipad and I still have the additional paper ! (Whew, Heavy !!) but I can't get rid of them .
I ditched paper a few years back but am quickly running out of my never-ending supply of wrapping paper!
True. Although I'll never get to use it!

What I s by old habe done was shut down, power down, and restart to make sure it cleared.
just a bit fast on that descend before final, usually the attitude follows to be corrected but like you said "that was sporty" nice flight captain ! 👌
Thanks so much. Having great speed brakes made all the difference in salvaging that one.
We very much appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Question : most RNAV have FAF in alignment with (in this case ) RWY 7 -
I assume you had VNAV engaged AND autopilot
so at FAF the jet was configured for landing , at
MINS and on VASI AND
at VRF + additives
So - on speed on final LDG
configured
You do not explain HOW you got “high /fast / wide?
Some of your viewers might want to know WHAT an “RNAV “ approach IS
and how it’s helpful for non ILS equipped airfields
Anyways if you’re upset at
“high and fast “ please explain HOW we GOT there
if everything was perfect at
FAF on the RNAV RWY 7 ?
The alert resolved itself but not before I got out of the groove as you see in the video
What I should have done was execute a Go Around.
In 1997 when I upgraded to DC9 Captain off 767

We all have a messed up approach now and again. You seemed to have it together over the numbers.

Exactly the same thing.
I could be wrong but it did not look like you had any flare in that landing, just straight touchdown. but nice anyway.
Good eye for sure...you must a pilot. So this jet you fly to the runway. All of the other airplanes I've flown you level, flair, and stall right at touchdown. This jet you fly all the way onto the runway.
