    I just picked up a bare TD-07 module for a mini e-kit that I'm building. Cool feature that I've discovered: if you hold down enter, you can adjust the volume of your Bluetooth paired device independently of kit volume. This essentially gives you a separate mix in volume knob, which is really handy when playing along to music, something even the TD-17 doesn't have. It may not be important for everyone, but I find it very helpful personally.

    Thanks for this review - clear and concise. This is definitely going on the list (new learner) - probably the best kit for around the $1,500 (AUD) price point, from what I can tell.

    All I can say is thank God for competition! This kit is almost identical to my old TD-4KX2 (just worse crash and ride) which back in 2011 cost the same as the TD-17KVX costs now. Yay for Roland being more competitive at lower price tiers!

      That's something I hadn't full considered, to be honest - the price compared to older kits rather than just what's been around recently. Will have to do some digging to gain some perspective on that front. Thanks!

    When I was much younger, I had a large Rogers set ( around 17 piece) but I haven't played with any regularity for over 20 years. Being married now and having a son, I decided to jump back into it. I'm blown away at how far electric drums have come in that time. So, I did my research and ended up buying this kit. I've had it a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it! The only thing I've found so far that bothers me is that it doesn't have a genuine rim click sound. It has a rimshot sound but not an actual rim click sound. Other than that, I love it.

    • @essenter4222

      But it has rim click sound, you just need to use manual and look for Crossstick or XStick function

    Awesome review!! Thank you! I’m trying to decide between this and the TD-17kv. I’m an intermediate drummer that lives in an apartment and just wanting to play drums quietly. Either route I would plan on upgrading to a 3-zone ride (either the 13 or 15) and I’ve owned a TD-17 in the past. I’ve also owned a td-11 which I feel was up there in the same league as the 17 and 07. I was a huge fan of the cymbal sounds that the 17 had but felt like the snare and toms on the 11 were WAAAY better. I know that’s just my ear and personal precedence but based on the couple reviews I’ve seen, the 07 may have a slight edge on sound editing? But also for 350$ you get more sounds, bigger pads, and a better hi-hat controller with the 17. So I guess I need to decide if I want to spend 350$ on the all-around kit upgrade or spend it on a ride cymbal. 🤣 sounds like I’m more venting my decision process than commenting but you did such a good job at reviewing and comparing!! 🙏🏼👍

    I'd like those overhead settings in my TD17. Also, I'm glad I managed to get the 17K-L (price was my limitation) before they discontinued it to this, proper outputs to PA and sample import have been pretty critical for me.
    A tip for 07/17 and maybe 27 to get rid of that "Roland signature sound" - for each pad EQ reduce 3-4kHz by at least 4dB. It's where that resonant "swish" sound lives and I found when I did that it improved the overall sound pretty significantly. I also still tend to boost bass and highs a little and remove more of that 3-4kHz on the mixing console but it's a good start having that already done on the module itself.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it would be great to have that feature on the 17 - it makes a surprising difference to the sounds. And good tip! I have a bad habit of using additive EQ a lot on Roland modules rather than subtractive, but when I do boost frequencies, it's usually on either side of that area so I'm not surprised you get good results from a cut around there. Roland sounds are definitely a bit top/high-mid focused which lends to their unnatural character.

    • @mikosoft
      @mikosoft 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop since I'm also dabbing in live sound and recording I heard a lot of pros talking about subtractive eq to quickly improve sound and I tend to use it when doing festivals where soundcheck time is very tight. Gets the job done quickly and if the instrument or player don't sound good to start no amount of eq will help anyway

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, definitely! There are areas of the toms and kicks that I tend to universally cut on most Roland sounds that carry over from acoustic drums too - cutting around 315Hz on the kick and a wide scoop around 630Hz on toms tend to clean up the boxy frequencies well, like on acoustics. It's just a shame that there's only the 3 bands on Roland's EQ settings.

  • @brandondrake8092
    @brandondrake8092 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Also, I really wish Roland would take a hard look at acoustic drums and realize that the floor Tom is NEVER smaller than the snare!!! 😂 idk why that annoys me so much but could they really not see that when setting these kits up?? When I had my td-17kv, I had already purchased a pdx-100 for my td-11 and used it as the snare and moved the pdx-12 as the floor Tom. I’m sure many people would roll their eyes at me for this but it seems like almost every Roland kit has a larger snare than floor Tom. 🙄

    I purchased this a month ago after not playing consistently for fifteen years and am having a lot of fun. In store testing and the first few days for me were NOT as "just riding a bike". I was terrible and after not playing for many years along with being a lefty trying to play righty kits on display was disheartening. Within a few days and while conjuring images and sayings from my amazing teacher "Muzz!" I was about where I left off except my sticking and grip is much inproved. Being able to drum in an apartment building at night is something. During each session I remove my headphones to make sure it's not real kit. I use #15 "groove" kit the most but I want to see if I can add the kick from #1 studio kit. Feels great to play again when ever I want!

    Thanks for the video! Thinking back to my journey I started with the TD-1 series, primarily to see if I liked drums as an instrument, upgraded to the TD-25, and finally to the TD-50. My thoughts on the line:
    - For the beginner: I'd kill the TD-1K, offer a $200-$300 version of the TD-1DMK with rubber toms, with an upgrade path to mesh toms, etc. Total investment of $750 over time.
    - For the drummer ready to move to the intermediate stage, The TD-07 is priced right at $1000, but Roland should of added support for all the non-usb pads and the module features of the TD-17 and eliminate the TD-17. As with the low end, topping out at a $1750 total investment over time.
    - For the "pro" drummer - the current VAD/TD-27/TD-50 offering, but I'd start the lowest model at $2000.

    • @StanPuftone
      @StanPuftone 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1- Err....The TD-1K is the rubber pad version of the TD1DMK
      2- The TD-17 is at the $1750 price point, & to upgrade to USB pads would cost a fortune. No way can you add those & sell it for $1750
      3- The technology won't allow the price to be that low at the moment. Unless you want Roland to disregard all quality control & manufacture their stuff in back alley electronics workshops.

    • @Mr_Tummy
      @Mr_Tummy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StanPuftone
      1- Err....The TD-1K is the rubber pad version of the TD1DMK - Yeah so the beginner drummer has a few options:
      - drop $500 for the TD-1K and stop there, all good. The only risk, the cost comparison to a (probably cheaper) acoustic kit (max spend $500)
      - drop $700 for the TD-1DMK, assuming they are comfortable spending that amount before knowing if they like playing drums (max spend $700)
      - drop $500 for the TD-1K and if they like playing drums and decide to upgrade to mesh, sell the TD-1K and drop another $700 for the TD-1DMK (max spend $1200)
      So IMO, if Roland offered a single and expandable beginner kit, with a low entry point that's affordable for Mom/Dad, and if the drummer decides drumming is not for them, a lower amount of money risked, but if they enjoy drumming, spending additional $ to upgrade over time, to a level, just below Roland's intermediate kits.
      2- The TD-17 is at the $1750 price point, & to upgrade to USB pads would cost a fortune. No way can you add those & sell it for $1750 - I'm not suggesting the TD-17 get upgraded to support USB pads at a $1750 price point. Let's talk about the drummer who's looking for a mid range kit. It looks like the TD-07 is a dead end (e.g. does not support 2 trigger pads), so what's the upgrade path, drop another $1750 for the TD-17, or a cheaper option swap to the TD-17 module? Again, IMO I'd offer a $1000 intermediate kit that supports the full range of non-usb pads/cymbals and give the drummer the ability to upgrade over time, just below Rolands top range kits.
      3- The technology won't allow the price to be that low at the moment. Unless you want Roland to disregard all quality control & manufacture their stuff in back alley electronics workshops. - Clarified in #2 above.

      Glad you're enjoying it! I've just had chance to try out the TD-27 today, I'm really impressed with it! Coming off the back of using all the other Roland modules, it's probably the best value offering, but I agree about the cable snake being an unfortunate thing. I'd personally like it to be made of something a bit tougher than plastic too, but otherwise it's a great module so far!

With the TD-07KX, it has additional crash cymbal, but single zone toms, whereas the TD-17KV has dual zone toms and more upgradeable, albeit older module, plus the ~$114 saved could go toward a Ludwig Speed Flyer Pedal. The best things to use for amplifying electronic drums are PA speakers (most tend to use active speakers so you don't also need an external amp), preferably at least 12" PA speakers, but 15"+ is better.

      Yeah, overall it's a very good package for beginners, though maybe a little pricey. There's room to grow with the sounds available and the components are very durable and reliable, so it should last a long time and re-sell at a good price if you ever wanted to upgrade.

    Hi. Great video. I'm the target buyer.. I'm looking to upgrade my kit from TD 1 kv. I use electronic kits just for practice, and my wife and neighbour would love to know if this kit is quiet? That is a major requirement. My current kit makes a right racket, especially rubber toms and the cymbals. I'd upgrade hihat if possible. Anyway, all the best

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey! Thanks for watching! Hmm, the kit is quiet as far as eDrums go - the mesh all round helps that, much quieter than the thudding you get from rubber pads. The cymbals will likely be the same sort of volume as the cymbals that came with your TD-1KV setup (they're nicer but the construction is similar).
      The kick drum pad/tower is the one part of electronic drums that is always difficult to make quiet. It might be a touch quieter than your current one as it's a sort of fabric mesh rather than rubber and it's not attached to the rack, but the vibrations through the floor will always be a factor. This will probably be the only part though, as opposed to all of the toms like the TD-1, and you can get softer beaters or the Roland noise eaters that can reduce the noise if you need to. Hope that helps!

      Ah yeah, I saw someone post about it yesterday thinking it was just a store configuration, then stumbled upon the Roland email ad that had gone to my spam box 😅 Interesting that they've decided to put one out without the digital pads included, getting big TD-25K vibes from the setup. Seems to be around £2000 on the UK sites I've seen it in, £500 or so less than the KV kit. Much more value in the KV from my perspective, but I suppose the option being there for those who can't quite afford it is always useful!

    Hey there! So all I need to get a ride cymbal with a functioning bell zone is to get the CY-13R, plug it into the CR2 input, and set the sound to RDB? This will give me a 3 zone ride with the appropriate sounds for edge, bow and bell? And I can set the original ride to any sound I want?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, though there's one more step. In the SETUP > PAD menu, there's an option for CR2Usage. You'll need to swap that to "RDB". That will then make that input act as the ride bell. I'm a drummer for 12 years and never had a real drum kit before, because of noise issues and not having a place for a real drum kit in my house. I get married and moved with my wife to an apartment. In one of the empty room i decided to place a e-drum kit and i bought an begginers kit from a local brand (i'm from Brazil). The module is just a copy of some Carlsbro module, the pads are all rubber and all dual zones, having 3 cymbals (2 crash and 1 ride) and 4 tons (2 tons and 2 floor toms). But the sensitivity and the sounds were really simple.
    This year a sold it and in May i bought this Roland TD-07Kv kit. The sounds are amazing, the mash pads for tons and snare are really good and the triggering are tight! But i really get a little disappointed with the limitations on the module. Just one extra cable, making us obligatorily sacrifice an extra pad just to use the cable as a trigger to the bell zone on a better ride cymbal is barelly a shame.
    I reallt love the sounds of the samples, but is really limited. Just 5 snare sounds. Ok, we can change a lot of their soundings on the module, but we have a lote more kick drum soundings. Same for the tons sounding, there's not too much sound options. But for this price range, a module that make us able to change sizes, pitchs, muffleling, overheads, rooms, the drum heads and even the beaters is such a good thing!
    The foot pad for the hi hat is not that good, but we are able to upgrade it to and VH 11, which is very expensive here in Brazil, but is an awesome upgrade.
    I think i will change just the module one day, to an TD-17 just to be able of using more pads (i normaly use 3 cymbals on a real kit)

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop

      No need to apologise, we all start somewhere! Unfortunately not, no - the Bluetooth is only for audio coming into the module (so to hook up a phone to play music through your kit, for example). Bluetooth has too much latency (delay) for playing the drum audio through Bluetooth headphones or speakers - there would be noticeable lag from hitting the pad to hearing the sounds, so no manufacturers build that option in. For sound coming in, that isn't an issue. Hope that helps!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! There are a couple of things it might be. First off - is your module definitely picking up the fact that you are hitting the snare rim zone? When you hit it, the "SN" symbol under the Instrument selection should show an R next to it for the rim. If your module isn't picking this up properly, you might need to change trigger types, adjust the H/R Adjust setting (p.22 of the manual) or check that the cables or pad are working correctly by testing them with other pads/cables on the loom.
      If it is picking up the rim correctly and you've definitely enabled the XstickSens parameter, the only other thing that comes to mind is that certain snare sounds don't have cross-stick sounds on them. Only some of them do - typically the acoustic style snares in the first Snare instrument group (Mahogany through to Piccolo, I think).
      I don't own the module myself so I can't really try to troubleshoot it much further than that, but I hope it helps!

If as a beginner, It would make me really think twice before getting it. I would have looked a lot harder at the step up kit with far better upgradability, when your shelling out that amount of cash? Particularly when early on as your skill accelerates, you'll be looking far earlier to upgrade than some one with moderate to good skills with a kit your happy with..... bit like small children, they grow out of clothes very quickly as opposed to older kids..... hopefully that analogy makes sense? lol
    IMO, it needs a price point to reflect its target, beginners who would be looking fairly quickly to upgrade..Paying big bucks for your beginner kit is going to hamper those wanting to upgrade in the near future. As a long time musician and professional drummer there is nothing like the real deal. Singerland or Ludwig. Any thing else is like sleeping with a telephone pole.

      I cant practice at 11pm on my Ludwigs. I can on my Roland set. One of the main reasons people buy them.
      And they are just plain fun.

      I've never heard any acoustic kit sound better than an edrum kit. Never.
      They sound like tin cans in comparison to the high end, stereo, studio quality sound of decent edrums. But.... ea to their own I suppose. Once I'd heard decent edrums, I never went back to acoustics and probably never will. Too loud and zero bass with acoustics - not to mention the incessant DIN they create. No wonder most rock drummers are half deaf.

    the natural sounds of the snare drum are terrible, they all sound weak and plastic. Nothing to do with the old td-7 and I'm a Roland fan, a shame!

      Nah, there's a few 6 stroke rolls in there. And the first drum-only demo starts with a RLL fill 😅
