    I usually hate these "hand-drawn" videos but this one was explained simply and got straight to the point to help me understand just how much size each held. Thank you.

    1 kilobyte (KB) is actually 1000 bytes exactly, there is a common confusion about this. kilo, mega, giga etc. is always a power of 10. For power of 2 we use kibi, mebi, gibi. For example 1 kibibyte (KiB) = 1024 bytes. Part of the reason why there is a confusion about this is that Windows operating system uses wrong terms that does not comply with ISO standards. On Linux and if I remember correctly Mac OS X there is a difference between KB and KiB and they are calculated correctly. That is why a 8GB flash drive is "7.45GB" on Windows and 8GB everywhere else.

      Thanks for the comment, the abbreviations are indeed more complex than I had initially imagined!

    • @raprex
      @raprex 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was not always the case. 1 kilobyte originally was 1024 bytes. The definition was changed around 1998, when kibi etc was introduced.

    1024 TeraByte = 1 PETABYTE (PB)
    1024 PetaByte = 1 EXABYTE (EB)
    1024 ExaByte = 1 ZETTABYTE (ZB)
    1024 ZettaByte = 1 YOTTOBYTE (YB)

    There's a mistake in the video at 1:40. You abbreviated Kilobytes as (Kb), should be (KB). Just important for newer people to mind there is a big difference between small b and capital B (bits vs bytes).

    • @DaneHartman
      @DaneHartman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks ApexProd - Good catch. I'll make the fix on the next iteration of this video that I release. In the meantime, I have added a note at said time to note correction.

    • @jespernrgaard8710
      @jespernrgaard8710 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a distinction between bits (small b) and bytes (capital B) is important. However, so is the correct prefix notation. The prefix "kilo" has the symbol k - in lower case, i.e. kilobytes is abbreviated kB.

    I don't get it: so I have a Word document contains 100 characters without pictures or charts or anything, only characters. That is supposed to be 100 bytes, right? But when I check its properties it says it's 11,686 bytes. Anybody?

    • @DaneHartman
      @DaneHartman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Microsoft Word stores much more information than just the characters themselves (formatting information, etc.). If you choose 'Save as' and save it as plain text, you'll see the file is much smaller and should be about 1 byte for each character.

    I get the 1KB = 1024 Bytes but then every time you increase the value you keep saying "*Actually 1024" like 1000 KB is actually 1024 bytes? Or you meant to multiply by that value? In the same terms that you are using 1MB is actually 1,048,576 Bytes.

    • @DaneHartman
      @DaneHartman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right. It increases by 1024 with each unit. So 1MB is 1,048,576 bytes (1024x1024), exactly as you said, and 1GB would be 1024x1024x1024.

    1GB can hold 1000 pictures doesn't it depend on the quality of the picture like from 480p to 4k ??

    • @DaneHartman
      @DaneHartman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It totally does depend on resolution, bits per channel, compression, etc. A photo could easily be 50MB for a high-res raw format image, or 50kb for a low-quality JPEG.

  • @Fabien28240
    @Fabien28240 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    (at 1:35) you wrote 1000 bytes = 1 KILOBYTE (1 kb),
    I don"t agree with kb.
    you should wrote 1000 bytes = 1KILOBYTE (1 kB) , isn't it ? Like for MB, GB and TB ...
    1 kb = 1000 bits (1 kilobits)
    1kB = 8kb

    A single byte can be a single character. The comparison of: a short story of 1000 words require 1000 bytes (1kb), is really inaccurate unless it's a thousand one letter words and punctuation. But that wouldn't make for a good story.

    • @DaneHartman
      @DaneHartman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Microsoft Word stores much more information than just the characters themselves (formatting information, etc.). If you choose 'Save as' and save it as plain text, you'll see the file is much smaller and should be about 1 byte for each character.
