That was the MOST lambs we've EVER had... but was it TOO MANY?! | Vlog 687

  • We made it!
Spring lambing 2023 is officially over, but wow... the hits kept coming leading into the final delivery which was by far the worst I've ever assisted.
Thank you all for being a part of this lambing journey... definitely not my finest days, and life can do that.
But we do what we can with what we have.
This was by far the most lambs per ewe that I've ever had on the farm... but honestly, with the losses associated with these numbers, I question whether it's something to re-assessed.

Sandi, your daughter has your amazing strength & tenacity, I *know* it doesn’t make this journey any easier, but Jess has caught this early (thank god you have such an amazing medical team who didn’t dismiss her due to her young age), she has every fighting chance of getting through this, you all do, & please, please remember you have nearly a million people from all over the world sending you, Jess & all of your family so much love, prayers & blessings through this journey. We aren’t going anywhere. We’re here every step of the way whenever either / any of you need us, OK? Talk to us, rant to us, get angry, use us as your soundboard, that’s what friends do, right? And I feel this community is more like a big friendship than anything else.
My father was a dairy farmer, he never took days off, not when I was hospitalised when I was 8, not when he was sick, any of my brothers were sick, mum was sick.. farming life is amazing, but brutal on your emotional headspace. Please take time for you. Lean on those around you when you can. You can only be strong for so long. Utilise any help others offer & don’t feel guilty for it (because I know what you’re like!)
Sending you all so much love, always, Laura xx 💗

Wonderfully said! Only thing I’d like to add for Sandy on that topic of accepting help when offered is, people want to help but don’t necessarily know what to do. Let them cook meals, let them grocery shop for you. It brings these people great joy when they can do something for you. You may have to be specific but they can accept that. My daughter was diagnosed with cancer when she was 2 years old. She turns 23 this year. I spent a lot of nights in prayer. God is good! Now I’m an oncology nurse. It’s gonna be tough in the beginning. Fully rely on God! ❤

@@trishavickers73 Amen to that! Sometimes it’s the ‘smaller’ gestures that mean so very much; meals cooked, after long & gruelling hospital stays, grocery shopping, a friend popping over to empty bins & pop the vacuum over, I know I’ve had friends who’s children or loved ones have had cancer who just appreciated a friend coming over for coffee, it just made them feel so much less alone.
I’m so glad your daughter is doing well now. X

Sandi, this has been a very busy lambing for you, likely the busiest ever. It has also been difficult for you personally with Mark’s broken wrist, and then Jessica’s cancer diagnosis. Being busy in difficult times, yet you’re hanging in there with all the determination and heart you can muster. You’re being the best supportive mom possible for Jessica, your #1 priority. And trying hard to look after your sheep #2 under trying circumstances. Take heart, you have a great family and friends supporting you. Draw on that support as needed, where possible. It will help. Vaya con Dios.

I’m a NICU nurse, and when there are outcomes that aren’t great I have a small group text with coworkers where we can vent and cry and celebrate and be silly and just understand each other. It’s okay to not be strong sometimes, just make sure you have your own “group text” where you can cry and yell and send silly gifs. I hope Jess has a fantastically easy journey with no side effects and a quick, complete recovery…and then someday you can be the strong one in the group text. It’s okay if right now you need others to be strong for you. ❤

Sandy, as a mom/homesteader, every time I watch one of your vids I say to myself “ so many people have no idea how challenging it is to be a mom/ farmer/homesteader “ Your strength amazes me. I know that your human family comes first and your wooly family comes running in sliding to a stop right next to them. These armchair farmers have no clue. Farming is every day, no matter what. Having a baby? You get 3 maybe 4 days to recover then back to the barn you go. Kids sick? Doctor them up and while they sleep, off to the barn.
We lost our oldest son to a water accident, as I grieved I took care of the animals and got things set up for a few friends to take care of them while we was in a different state, burying our first born. He was 29 years old. I didn’t get to grieve, I needed to be there for the other 3 kids, my husband, our 3 grandsons and whoever else was breaking down and needed a strong shoulder and a soft hug. Your going to be ok, Jess is going to be ok, she is her mothers daughter. 😊

@@bettablue2660 Your bringing attention to this slight overstep by the poster has caused far more disruption than the post itself! Yes, Sandy's family must look to their doctors for information and base their life choices on that information, but telling someone their child will be just fine should not be cause for comment! In fact, I would be surprised if Jesse's doctor has not already assured her that she will be fine...most do you know. Right up until the day they can no longer get away with saying it! Everyone facing cancer, whether stage one or four, should get nothing but our support and yes, our hope for a complete recovery. I was just diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer and have had many friends say that I will be 'just fine'. I take it as what it is meant to be, encouragement and hope.

@@bettablue2660 My 2 year old son had a brain tumor. I spent weeks not knowing if it was cancer, wondering if it was operable, watching my baby be poked, prodded, confused, hurt, and eventually go under the knife and have his brain cut into. We also don't know if it will come back. I never got upset or hurt by people telling me he was going to be okay or everything was going to be okay. You're putting far too much emphasis on the literal meaning of the words rather than seeing it for what it is which is a kind, caring gesture of support and optimism. If you want to be that technical, we could ALL die tomorrow for all we know. A LOT of us aren't going to be okay, but that doesn't mean we have to dwell on it or spend precious energy worrying about semantics. Your son needs you, and YOU need you. Don't let comments on the internet or well-intentioned comments from others about your situation bother you so much. It's not good for your mental health. And I say that with absolute sincerity.

I'm so sorry that Jess has to go through this terrible time. I'm sorry that you and Mark have to witness your child being ill and requiring treatment. I'm sorry that Jack has to watch his sibling suffering from the sidelines. To you, Jess, Mark, Jack and your extended family, I'm sending thoughts and prayers to you all. Sandi, you show such amazing strength just to be out in that barn. It's so much to be dealing with, it truly shows how resilient and strong you are, even though you may not feel it. I cried for Jess when I watched her video. I cried for you during this video, knowing what you have going on. I have cried reading through some of these comments, seeing how you've touched so many lives and we all care for you and yours. I am a stranger, but I feel your pain. I hope that you all can take one day at a time, reach out when you need extra help, eat good food to keep strong, both mentally and physically, and be kind to yourselves. I wish there was more I could do, like cook a few meals, but Australia is a long way away and uber eats won't deliver! Big, big hugs 🫂

The fact that you have a place to talk out your frustrations, heartaches, sorrows, and mental health troubles, I believe not only helps you, but also those who watch your channel. It's so important that we have a place to share our burdens. A burden shared is a burden much more manageable.
You have hundreds of thousands of people praying for your family, and especially, Jessica, that she can handle the treatment, and has a complete recovery! As a mother, I know how hard it is to see a child suffer, and know you can't step in and go through the pain and suffering for them. Having you there with her, to hold her when she cries, and to laugh with her when she laughs, is going to be comforting to her.
    God bless your entire family.

You are doing great in all aspects of your life, considering overwhelming family stress. Saw Jess’ post. She is showing herself to be a very mature young lady. I can imagine how proud you are as you watch her sail these stormy seas. She gets prettier by the day, (has her Mom’s big blue bright eyes ❤), so bright, so articulate. You and Mark have equipped her well to handle the battles of life. It really helps all of us to follow the Brock example of deeply caring for people and animals, hard work, and connection to community. I know your ‘tube’ family are grateful that you are willing to pull us along behind you on the lammy sled, over the straw, to the comfort of a bed with our mom and siblings, big drink of milk, and a deep sleep after one of life’s major traumas. Yes honey Jess put up a video yesterday, explaining what many of us already suspected😢. As I’m sure the same goes for many others, Jess and your whole family are in our prayers🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
It’s heartbreaking. You have raised such a strong and incredible daughter. She puts up such a brave front, but this has to be like a nightmare that just won’t end. I think it’s absolutely wonderful that since this is supposedly caught early, that she is doing fertility treatments . Such a smart way to go if you can do it. It’s so very very obvious the love and support that your family gives her. That’s how she is who she is and is doing what she is doing. You are such an amazing family who just starts to get up gets knocked down again, but you still get back up. Though that is the extreme opposite of easy. Life is hard and sadly seems like some of the best people out there have the hardest time. Please hang in there. We love you also thank you for your support of mental health awareness and putting the word out there. mental illness is a horrific militating disease. It needs our understanding our love and our help and most of all our support. Take care all of you. You are in my prayers❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

Hi Sandi, Ive watched Jesse's vlog and I shared my medical journey with her. You are an amazing woman, wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend & a FABULOUS FARMER.!!!! I am the youngest of 9 kids, we lost our Dad when I was only 1 year old. We lost 4 of my brothers and Mom past away last year. She and I enjoyed watching your channel so very much, as she was bedridden the last 4 years. My mom was the strongest woman I've known. No matter how hard life was for us, she always found a reason to smile, sometimes through tears, but she just lit up our world. You remind me of her so very much. I saw Jess's post. In a week I , along with three good friends/ roomies from college are heading to the beach. We are all 65. ALL four are cancer SURVIVORS!!!!! So we pooled our best tips for the cancer journey.
    1) remember that whatever "survival rate" you're given, some one makes up that number. Might as well be Jess!
    2) the best medicine is family and laughing. Read that again.
    3) take it one day at a time. It will change day to day
    4) have a notebook with sections and pockets to write everything you're told by medical people. This really helps if different people are with Jess at different times. It's also great for helping memory. Ask for the medical papers on any drugs or procedures. Keep them in a pocket of folder.
    5) EVERY patient needs an advocate. Do not be afraid to speak up.
Lastly crying is allowed. But laughing is encouraged.
Prayers for a quick and successful journey.

Sandi I have been thinking of you and your family all week. I have two young daughters and and small flock of about 50 and just can’t imagine how you are handling it right now with everything that’s going on. You’re amazing even though you probably don’t feel like it right now.
I also wanted to say thank you for posting all your bad with your good. Sharing your hard pills to swallow with the world where most only share the good has helped so many people. I have lots of friends starting out who whenever something goes wrong they think they’re the only one because so few post the bad. I have pretty much gone through all the bad at least once already and share that with them and I can also say look, this happens to other people too. So when they are wanting to crawl in to a hole and give up you give them enough hope that they are not so terrible so they can pick themselves up off the ground and keep going. You did this for me as well when I was just starting out. You’ve wiped the tears off so many faces. I hope you know that we are so thankful for you.
You’ve got a lot of people thinking of you and your family and you are loved by many. ❤️

Whether it’s prayers, positive thoughts, lit candles, dedicated meditations, distance reiki, or other similar methods, hundreds if not thousands of folks are sending positivity your direction. You are a much beloved family.

I really do love this channel. It’s truly a “slice of life” of Sandi’s life and all those blessed to be in it. I appreciate her honesty, compassion and humor as she deals with whatever life and lambs throw at her. ❤🐑❤
Unlike other creators that attempt this type of content, she comes across as relatable and genuine in a way that isn’t gimmicky or part of a schtick for more likes/views.

I never tire of watching the lambs taking advantage of the extra room for lamb races while their mums are eating.
I was concerned when last time you mentioned that Jess was having to go to Toronto for treatment and her recent video confirmed my suspicions. Best hopes and wishes for you and yours. ❤

Hi Sandi. Give yourself grace, and also give yourself credit. You had 360 lambs, and your ewe lambs were overachievers. You worked a lot of miracles with poorly lambs. You accomplished so much in this lambing, plus dealing with all that you are dealing with. I think you did a stellar job with your sheep. Please remember to take good care of yourself. ❤

RESILIENCE and CAPACITY - thank you for recognizing mental health. Life throws curve balls - Sandi and Mark are insanely proud of both kids and so you should be. Jess has built her professional team to direct her care and medical journey. She has an incredible support network. I saw her vlog and I deeply respect the smart intelligent woman that she is. “Little cuddle puddles”
“ Friday dude! Dont you have places to be?”
I love your comments. Thank you for cheering this homebound, lonely lady (me). 😊
Sandi, you have so, so many people here who care for you and are emotionally supporting you and your family through thoughts and prayers. Please know that we understand those 🏔️ mountains of “what’s next?” Because they hit us all. Everyone has a different mountain, but we can get through that mountain by moving one pebble, one stone, at a time.
Please make time for yourself so that you are refreshed and can spend quality time with Jess.
May God bless you and provide you with much needed strength and wisdom. 🙏🏻♥️🐑

Hey Sandi, I'm a long time lurker first time commenter. What you felt really resonated with me. I lost my mom last September. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. We found out she was sick in July and 2 1/2 months later she was gone. In those months the uncertainty almost killed me. We had so many hospital trips with no answers and then one with the worst possible one. We were told that we could have 5 years tops and we didn't even make Christmas. Watching someone you love be in pain and being unable to help was gut wrenching. After we lost her my mental health was so terrible that I hid for months in my house. I'm a farmer like you, except I have horses not sheep. When you said someone said something about the hooves being long I felt it like it was aimed at me. I had the exact thing happen. Someone made an offhand comment that my horses hooves looked a little long. The thing is, they weren't wrong. However at that point in my life I was living in a hospital room with my mom. They don't mean to have their words cut deep but they did regardless. I truly wish the best for Jess and the rest of your family! I'll send all the positive vibes from my side of Canada (Alberta) to yours!

When those baby lambs are hopping and jumping it is just the most heartwarming cutest thing ever! Farmers do not get enough credit for all the hard work it takes to be a farmer! Your amazing, your family is amazing and you are stronger then you know! I love that I have found these channels on TH-cam to get a small glimpse into this world up until now I have not thought about at all ever! And because of you and Cammy and a few other channels I am now obsessed with Sheep! Thank you for sharing not just just the good and the cute but that hard realities and truth of it all as well! Hugs, prayers and positive vibes from Washington State U.S.A.!

You can do this Sandi! I wish I were closer to give you help in any way I could. You are the best of both worlds…shepardess, wife, MOTHER. To me you are the most inspirational lady I know. The world may seem to be hurtling down on you but you’ve got this. You are very loved by your family and by all of us in your TH-cam world. Many are praying for you and Jess. You have a great friend in Carissa. She will keep things going while you are elsewhere. Sending you positive thoughts! We love youSandi!

As someone who also endeavors to be a grade A livestock steward while balancing the demands of every day life my heart breaks for you. The symbolic nature of your lambing season and how you reacted to your losses is so apparently linked to how not in control you feel with what’s happening with Jess. It’s just another reminder of how not in control you are in your barn with lambing and that’s so painful. That’s a hard pill to swallow even when everything else is going well. But to undergo and push through this particular lambing group with its saddest moments while going through something so scary with your own child… you are Wonder Woman. The sheep are your happy place and you identify with them. To watch these lambs thrive or dive has had to have had a very heavy and unfiltered effect on you. Just know you are doing great and those of us that have been with you through the years are praying for you and your family and willing the best results into fruition for you.
