What I Found at The Thrift Store

  • The last 2 episodes of Vlogmas 2022 will be trickling in over the next few days as I wrap things up. Thrifting isn't my first choice for picking, if you couldn't already tell, BUT I do enjoy it when the thrift store is fruitful. Thankfully, today they were! I actually found some good stuff. Mostly antique and vintage glass were but I was willing to make the investment. Thrift store shopping is usually the best option when thrifting for resale I'm ready to give Laura Caldwell a run for her money! So come thrifting with me and see what I found at the thrift store in my thrift haul at the end.

    I've also all but given up on Goodwill. Their prices now rival TJ Maxx and Marshalls 🤦🏼‍♀️. Love supporting small business

      Agreed. I still shop GW but it's hit or miss on whether an item is reasonably priced. I find great deals at church run thrift shops. They have the best prices and I feel better supporting my own community instead of a big corporation.

      @countrysister700 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same in Central Texas. I don't know who's on their boards that doesn't understand they can make up the "loss" on lower per item prices by increasing the velocity of sales (decreasing the time spent on the shelf) and moving lots more through the store. I know several people who don't donate to them any more because of their newfound weirdness.

    The flower plates remind me of the old "sandwich" sets. The larger side held your sandwich and the smaller side held a tea cup or glass. My aunt used these almost every day. Her's were usually china. Yours would look so good with a small clear glass on the side. A great snack tray! Good finds today! I could see the cottage teapot in your booth, wish you'd bought it. Having fun, keep it up!

      Snack trays was what I also thought of when I saw those plates. Very possibly some cups may have been on shelves elsewhere in the store.

    Your daisy dishes are snack plates. A cup goes on the small daisy. Gorgeous antique salt glazed bowl. People I watch seem to like that 70s avocado green glassware, but so far it hasn't yet made a comeback with my buyers. Maybe this year!

    Like you I never considered myself a knick knack person but I have had a booth in central Dallas, TX for a year now and am surprised at how well they sell. I mainly do metal or ceramic pieces but what i have learned is that they make great filler, can be just the right pop of interest once styled, and can be found so inexpensively its been worth it to add to my booth. Totally agree about Goodwill, almost never go, but my local and regional thrifts are great and the church oriented ones are the best. Nothing beats an estate sale though!

    I have to agree with you. In recent months I have far more enjoyed antique malls over thrift stores. You don’t have to filter through junk and even if you don’t find that perfect item, it’s fun going down the memory lane of yesteryear. I also find it so relaxing and would rather pay a little more for someone else to sift through the junk for me.

    I'm in central Texas where the thrift stores have lost their minds. They see us booth owners buy cheap goods and profit at resale, so they've quadrupled their prices. Now we can't buy and their low income clients can't afford them either.

    Found your exact wire-handled mixing bowl on Ebay. The seller is asking $117.50.
    I can't post the link here, but the title on the Ebay listing is "EARLY 20TH C AMERICAN VINT PRIMITIVE BLUE & WHITE YELLOWARE HANDLED CERAMIC BOWL."
    There's also an exact match to your bowl that sold - with the handle missing - for $125.00 on Etsy. Again, that's the SOLD price, and it was missing its handle. The title on that listing is "RARE Antique Stoneware Milk Bowl, Blue and White."

    I agree with you about the Goodwill’s falling off, it seems like ALL of the thrift stores I have gone to for the past 5 years have gone straight downhill, I have a few theories, but hopefully we will see a turnaround, if not fingers crossed garage and yard sales won’t be crappy this year!

    • @susanturner1171
      @susanturner1171 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not so much that they've gone downhill as the fact that they are now grabbing all the goodies as they come in and putting them up on eBay. How do I know that? Because my grandson was a manager at a Goodwill store for a while and that is exactly what he did was go through everything as it came in and give it to the guy to post it on eBay

    Hi Amanda, I looked in my Collector’s Encyclopedia of Salt Glaze Stoneware and I believe found the handled bowl you purchased. It’s ‘Apricot with Honeycomb Milk Crock with Bail’. Size is 5 1/4H, 10 1/2 w. Of course with the addition of Ebay and Etsy, prices are no longer commanding these prices, but mint value in 2001 is $175-225. The $65 tag you mentioned is probably about right due to condition. Also the bottom of this crock has a swirl design which the book says appears to be unique to this pattern. I started collecting blue and white stoneware. This resource has been invaluable.

    I find I'm only going to Goodwill and savers Tuesdays senior Day. But with goodwill it does help if you get the discount card they offer. I bought 2 years ago for ten dollars I think and have never had to renew it since. I don't know if that's for everywhere or just my area. Also get the text info where they will text you where you can get 50 percent off one item. But my favorite places are the small mom and pop shops.

But I DO hit up the flea market every weekend. I mean, it’s a treasure trove 😭. And yard/estate sales. Also, for mutual inspiration, I’ve got an insta 👉👈🥺 lol! And it’s a bit like the Jolly Roger booth in factory mixed with yours: aesthetically arranged weirdness 😅.

    Personally, I find thrift store videos boring. Most of the time it's wading through trash to find just those 1 or 2 items, and there goes my 20 minutes. Why does everyone have to buy something at Goodwill every visit? Because they feel like they have to leave with something even though it might not be that great of an item. The little wooden handle on that crock is called a bale handle.
