    A large part of me thinks that luxury makeup lines are what sunglasses used to be 20 years ago- a small piece of luxury that the average consumer can justify a splurge on every now and then. In the current economy, a $3000+ handbag is out of reach for many but a $45-50 lipstick isn't, especially if it's during the Sephora sale. As someone who has wanted all the makeup since I was a child in the 90s, bring on the new launches! I'll buy 50 makeup launches for every bag, and the bag is usually preloved- even though I know if I stopped buying all the makeup I could easily buy new bags. ETA: It wasn't fragrance for me, it was my first Chanel eyeshadow I bought in college in 2001 when I started working in a luxury mall. A single that I wore every day, a beautiful brown duochrome I think named Sphinx.

    When I think of "cash grabs" I think of the numerous celebrity launches, JLO, Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson...I cringe every time a new launch comes out. I welcome new makeup from the designer brands and think most of them are high quality like their fashion.

      I'm the same! I do wonder though if I had loads and loads of money if I'd feel the same, i.e. do my spending obsessions align themselves naturally with what's actually accessible to buy regularly? Certainly in high school I was obsessed with Revlon and the Estee Lauder counter was a place of luxurious mystery 😆

  • @LisaF_
    @LisaF_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    I think the luxury beauty brands do well because, although a $100 eyeshadow quad is expensive because you can find a good quad for 1/3 the price, it’s something that more people are willing to spend than $10,000 for a handbag. I’ll never do that, but I will appreciate the taste of Chanel or Dior I can more easily buy. Same with fragrance.
    And…if a new luxury brand enters the beauty space and releases products as fantastic as Prada Beauty, I say BRING IT ON!

    Love your input on the business side of things. Funny story: when I first started watching you, you said something about liking an Hermes lipstick. As one of your older viewers, I was outraged at the price. I had a $75 gift card from Saks, I think, and thought I would try it, fully prepared to come to the conclusion $75 for a LIPSTICK was outrageous. Unfortunately, it turned out to be probably my most favorite lipstick ever - so much so that when my color disappeared online, I started looking around to source a backup.

    I’m a person not into packaging, it doesn’t turn my head. I’ve purchased from every brand but the strike rate is better in more expensive brands. I want great quality and novel colour ways. I’m not an aspirational purchaser, I’m practical. I’ve never wanted to buy clothing, shoes and handbags from fashion houses but I like good make up and if fashion houses have the money to make good products I’ll buy them regardless of the name.
    In Australia, we have to order many brands from overseas as they aren’t stocked in shops, so we never really know what things are like until they arrive on our doorstep. I agree that this new launches are good for the competition reasons. As you said, quality is going down and prices are going up, it is good to bring new products with good quality just to make the big guys loose part of the market and maybe reconsider their strategies.
    I think similar happened to the bags, LV (and the rest of LVMH group) used to have 3-4 price increases per year in the period of 2020-2022, last year and this year they became very quiet and prices are mostly the same or were increased once. I think people had enough of their greed (and very bad quality) and turned more to other brands like The Row, Loro Piana, Ferragamo, Prada, Miu Miu...

    Sofia. I agree with you about how out of control the prices are getting. That said some of these brands, like Prada and Hermes, have great performance which makes you tempted despite price. I also hope that some of these houses like D&G prices are bit more affordable 🤔 and again if good, I think will be successful hopefully.
    I don’t think it’s a cash grab if the products are good. It will be great if more houses step up as it may bring some great new things.
    And I hope it will press the ones who have been around, like Chanel and Dior, try a bit harder to get our dollars. At least I can hope.

    The launch of overly expensive items - like limited edition $500 lipsticks and $1000 perfume bottles - isn’t a “new” strategy for brands though. That’s been happening for decades. It may seem new now, but that’s because each generation has to experience it for themselves. Anyone who is in their 30’s now (when they start paying attention to what aspirational items they can buy) wasn’t aware of those same things happening back in the 70’s-00’s. The bigger changes in the beauty industry are harder for individuals to see because we haven’t lived long enough 😂

      I have a lot of thoughts on your video. I’m getting to be over Chanel and Dior makeup because of their current launches. Dior’s makeup formula and packaging is going down in quality for each launch. I can get the same quality liquid blush and skin filter from Rare Beauty for half the price. Chanel is releasing the same eyeshadow, bronzer, and blush colors in cheep packaging. When they do come out with something innovative it’s limited edition, and before I can really think about spending the money it’s sold out. I feel this is a cash grab. I have never tried Tom Ford’s makeup and I don’t think I will. If he’s going to release the same color makeup in different packaging over and over again and increase the price I’m not buying. I just ordered the Dolce and Gabbana bronzer and blush, I’m excited for this launch! I really hope it will work for my extremely dry mature skin.

    • @SofiaSeesBeauty
      @SofiaSeesBeauty  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's true but the difference is that back then the consumer who usually buys a $50 item probably would know about it. Those products were marketed to the consumers who came into the boutiques and not at Macy's. Because we live in this digital age, luxury seems more ubiquitous and we hear about products all over social media

    • @das_ein
      @das_ein 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SofiaSeesBeauty I almost came back to my original comment to say something similar! I agree that the instant availability of marketing and influencing (what used to be limited to ‘word of mouth’) makes it a different situation. We also now get to see people acquire these items, whereas if you didn’t run in rich circles back then, that only happened in the movies. I would love to know whether there’s been any increase in the ROI of this strategy over the decades and what are the factors at play. These are complicated, multi-factorial questions that market research companies dissect, but a mere mortal like me can only speculate about. 🧐 (at least I now can with ppl who I only see on my screen :))

    Hi Sofia,
    Happy Easter!🙂
    From my point of view cash grab are most of the skincare/makeup celebrity brands.
    When I started to use makeup I bought it from Dior, Chanel, Guerlain, Tom Ford (later), Estee Lauder foundation, then La Prairie foundation. These days I still buy Chanel and Dior makeup but much less because of the decrease in quality.
    I don’t mind if more fashion brands will go into makeup as long as they will come with very good products. I think more competition is necessary and beneficial for as, the customers, and will force the luxury brands to improve the quality in order to be relevant and profitable. So I will not consider a cash grab as long as their makeup line is high quality and innovative.

    I entered the luxury makeup world when the prices of those products were between 30 and 40 euros. Later I tried to find the products in sales, but now even this is hard for the luxury products. So, I actually started to back out from this makeup level. There are very nice middle level brands and products. The only category I have problem with is the foundations. It is hard to find good foundation even amongst the luxury ones and I haven´t been successful with the drugstore foundations. But I am motivated to keep looking for them. Even when I have the money, it´s just hard to justify. I´ve recently got my first luxury sunglasses and I regret it. They were quite cheap for luxury glasses (390,- euro), but I don´t see big difference in comparison to my 7 - 12 euros sunglasses collection. And I really do not appreciate an enormous logo on their sides.

My issue is department stores may not have enough space offering testers for demo since the prices are so high. I like the tangible experience of the products on my skin and package that gives me I am holding a luxurious jewelry. Not to
    Mention the turn into “clean beauty” which it is only a marketing strategy to
    make make up less long lasting and let me something a more wasteful society… who in this earth will buy a pallet for £100
    To through it away in a year or two????
    Most make up has always been made to last and lasting has always been a sign of quality… less keep it that way…. To this day (and I am 50) I have only finish 2 palettes… and I will be dam if I ever through i palette just because it is years old… I have paleta that I bought in my 30s working, smelling and performing as the first day and that is the way it should be.
    In make up sale by date is not expiring date…. Is the day by when retailers should sale by… so they make space for the new, coming collections.
    I have yet to have any make up including cream or liquid going bad … and many of those tend to last me for years (as mentioned before)

    Gucci’s bronzers and lip products are amazing but they are seriously lacking in eye products. I’d love to see higher quality from them with quads instead of those silly giant palettes that are way overpriced.

    @zeynepganz6066 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is an exciting topic. Like most who have commented already, I see the 'cash grab' piece of this coming from the creator/influencer/celebrity side of the beauty industry. As someone whose mother worked in luxury beauty for over 30 years, I feel like I've seen it all, and I tend to be very diligent about the purchases I make because we all work hard for paychecks! My mantra for beauty purchases this year is to use something up and buy another. I really want the new Prada foundation, but I have three other foundations/tints I'm working through before I purchase. I have not bought any Tom Ford lately; the $90 sticker price on those quads is a bit outrageous and cash grabby to me.

    • @SofiaSeesBeauty
      @SofiaSeesBeauty  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I dont really care about the brand, either new or established or even the packaging as long as the product is worth the price. I spend $90 on the Chantecaille future skin foundation because I have yet to find anything else that is as lightweight and non greasy on my very oily skin. But I won't spend even a dollar on dry, patchy eyeshadow just because it has a luxury brand logo on it. For me, the quality has to be there or it's not going in my collection.
