The reward program at Ulta is far superior to Sephora. I love that you get reward dollars that can be used for anything. At Sephora, you get points and after spending $200, you can get a trial size mascara. Yippee.🎉

Their owner is Uber wealthy ass and I really am starting to buy direct from websites and I use niche science based skincare so honestly they do need to get their stuff together plus they treat their employees like trash.

  • @DeborahCarlston

McKinsey as a source! As someone with an MBA from Wharton, you had me at that. And yes, the high prices are real. And the reformulations that are supposed to be "clean" just have the preservatives removed. So those new higher prices are coupled with lesser quality and quicker expirations of products.
Angela Van Rose just released a video about how her Chanel products, especially her foundations, are going bad in just a few months. Unacceptable for a luxury, high priced brand. I did get two of the Blanc de Nuit lipsticks, and they're OK so far. But, if these go bad in a few months, I won't be buying new Chanel lipsticks any more. Also, Chanel is clearly trying to appeal to a younger audience. But they don't have the bucks. Like my hairdresser, they're buying Maybelline and Sol de Janiero. In fact, when I wear Coco Mademoiselle, she says it smells like an "old lady fragrance".
Amen about your Ulta assessment. As for Estee Lauder, who I call The Great Brand Destroyer, they are discontiuing and changing some of the best products from The Ordinary. I use that brand and I'm really annoyed. Also, have you seen what they've done with Bobbi Brown lipsticks? They discontinued some of their most popular colors (Raisin and Rum Raisin come to mind) and raised the price to $43. That is an outrageous price for Bobbi Brown.
I just looked up NIOD. Their serums under their brand name, make no sense. I can get hyalauronic acid anywhere. As for Puig, they seem to be decent brand managers. Charlotte Tilbury and Byredo seem to be staying true to their brand missions, which is refreshing. I hope Puig can resist the temptation to stir the creative pot.
    Excellent video. Thank you.💚

I have a love/hate relationship with ulta. . . I think a major problem is their shipping. It seems like every 3rd order I receive has a broken product in it. I’m sorry, but a thin bubble mailer envelope is just not gonna keep your eyeshadows from breaking. But shopping in store isn’t my fav either bc a lot of the testers/displays are gross and the product I want is out of stock anyways. Ok, rant over! Haha! 💁‍♀️

    • @SofiaSeesBeauty
      @SofiaSeesBeauty  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

That's a good point I forgot to mention. I am rouge at Sephora and I can use Sephora like I do Amazon with Prime: there's very little barrier to me buying even just one little thing. At Ulta the shipping is super slow and I have to spend $50 I think it is to quality for free shipping

I don’t have an Ulta because I am Canadian. I hear horror stories of Ulta shipping. If you are going to buy luxury makeup and don’t go to the stores or are not near them you have to have them shipped to you. Perhaps it’s the waste that offends me. If you get shattered eyeshadows and you have to replace them, it must be super expensive for Ulta. Maybe because Ulta doesn’t seem to care, customers are also not buying their luxury products from them?

  • @CandidLy1

I would LOVE if Ulta or Sephora would have someone just like you on their board of advisers. Your experience and well thought out considerations of how these beauty companies could cater in a much more useful and productive way to their customer base is so valuable! Excellent!

I don't live near an Ulta or a Sephora (or Target or Kohl's). The one reason that I order almost solely from Sephora is the free shipping. If Ulta had free shipping, I would definitely be tempted to order more. If my finger is on the trigger on an item that is below the free shipping requirement for Ulta, I will look at Sephora or Nordstrom because of the free shipping.

  • @ArchieMakeup
    @ArchieMakeup 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

My two cents about Sephora v Ulta. The biggest differentiator between Sephora and Ulta is the type of consumer that shops there. Ulta attracts customers that are looking for quality products but don’t want/have discretionary budget to overspend. Thats why the rewards program is so lucrative. You get more bang for ur buck. Sephora on the other hand attracts folks with probably more leeway in their budget to be able to spend more than an average American. So when economy dips guess which consumer stops spending for items that are not a necessity? We are living in a very uncertain economic climate. The consumer that didn’t have enough money to spend on “wants” to begin with, will be the first to stop spending altogether.

  • @laursanity

Sephora does an amazing job marketing their annual beauty Rouge/VIB/Insider sales. I've spent more at Sephora the last couple years mainly because of these sales. We know pretty much routinely when they're going to happen so we get lists ready of products we know we want to buy during these sales. The issue I've had with ULTA is they try to also offer 20% off sales, but usually it's been after Sephora sales have already occurred and by that point I've already bought everything I wanted so they miss out on me purchasing anything. If ULTA offered their 20% off prestige purchases prior to the Sephora sale I might've purchased more products from them instead of spending all my money at Sephora.

    • @landcraftwellness9850
      @landcraftwellness9850 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I find the products Ulta offers in their sales are never the products or brands I buy from. The 20% Sephora sales definitely drive a lot of my purchases there.

I will not go into Ulta because I feel like they attack you the minute you walk in. I have actually had 5 people ask me if I need help within the first 2 minutes of walking in the door. It’s too much for me and now I only shop online. I often only buy Chanel items there or anything I can’t find on Sephora. I also choose Sephora more because their freebies and VIB Rouge offers tend to be high end options, whereas Ulta usually sends you drug store samples, even if you spend a lot.

The shipping for Ulta is horrible, and the customer service in store is horrible. If you are able to get someone to help you, they are not knowledgeable about products. I have always had great customer service at Sephora’s, and they are knowledgeable about the products. If someone is knowledgeable they can of course make more sales or better sales recommendations for things that you didn’t even know you wanted. It doesn’t surprise me Sephora is doing better. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Ulta should up their team training. If their team knows about products and can recommend items then they’ll be able to sell items within anyone’s budget. I’ve only been into one Sephora in Kohls recently, but I experienced the same great customer service.

Hi Sofia, just to let you know that I have the new Guerlain terracotta bronzer and the blush and highlight parts of it are not an over spray, for once😀. Just so you know. I find it really beautiful even though shade 3 of their bronzer is not my favorite shade, but mixing it with the blush and highlight parts makes it a beautiful color on my fair/light skin xoxo from Paris

I got it too because I couldn’t resist the design lol and I am SO glad I did!! And actually the wings of the bee as well as the tiny flower have a gorgeous duo chrome fuchsia/peach overspray but once that’s gone, the underlying pigment remains pink. Swirled all together makes it lighter than the original 03 Warm shade and the finish is different too; it’s way more of a satin glow than the original matte, at least on my skin. Basically, it’s worth getting this time! 😁

Sephora at Kohls feels more like a real Sephora store, versus the Ulta at Target. The Kohl's Sephora offers a wider range of premier brands, but with perhaps fewer products in the brand range. The Ultas in Target are confusing and don't offer many premier brands. I rarely walk through those Target Ultas versus I always browse the Kohls Sephoras when I''m in the store. I love the Ulta rewards program--it's so much better! But hate the Ulta store brand; the Sephora Collection is much better quality. Plusses and minuses to each.

I have used both Niod and The Ordinary. I definitely see a difference in formulation in comparable products. For example the texture of the each copper serum. While The Ordinary feels a bit sticky, the Niod one is liquid and lightweight. I think many products are overly convoluted in their marketing, but I do like their Survival 0 (an antioxidant serum).

    Hi Sofia,
After I watched the latest video posted by French for a Day (Angela) about Chanel I will be extra careful with my future purchases from this brand. They are now into clean beauty trend and they change the formula of their eyeshadows, foundations, lip pencils, eyeliners and probably more products. Angela said her Chanel foundations went bad after less than 6 months, same with lip pencils (became hard and almost unusable), people in comments said that the blushes released last year develop a hard pan. I am very sad and I hope Dior and Chanel will find a way to improve the quality of their products.
In my opinion Hourglass and Natasha Denona are two overpriced brands with a cheap look and average quality (best case scenario). I was never interested in their old/new releases.
Charlotte Tilbury, like you finally said, is a kitschy brand and I had this opinion from the moment I discovered the brand. So the new perfumes are in the line with the brand. But people are different and what is kitschy for me can be luxury brand with fantastic products for others.
Regarding Tom Ford, the multiple limited editions with Honeymoon and Body Heat are ridiculous and insulting for customers.
D&G and Danessa Myricks are not available in Australia but I’m sure your review will be very interesting and helpful for people who have access to the brands.
I am not interested in the new YSL lip balms and the new Guerlain limited edition bronzer.
Sephora Australia is like a bad joke compared with Sephora US or France and many other countries. When I need makeup or skincare I go to Mecca, Myer or David Jones.
Very interesting video and I hope will be more like this!🙂

Yay! I’m so excited about olive shades for Chanel Les Beiges! I have an Olive undertone but typically go for neutral foundations of olive isn’t offered. I’m usually B20 or B30 depending on the season though the shades aren’t the same from line to line. (SUPER frustrating when shopping online) but regardless, I’m pumped for this!
I’m so excited you decided to get D&G’s new makeup!!! Almost everyone else I follow was not at all interested so it will be great to see what you think! :)
I’m a Sephora girly, they just have more of the brands I’m interested in and I prefer the experience of going into Sephora over Ulta. The only things I tend to get at Ulta are Chanel makeup and the random skin care or hair care product that just happens to be on super sale when I look at their app.
Anyway, I love your videos! And I hope you’re enjoying your new life in TX! ❤

Guerlain Superbloom bronzer and blush compact is a refillable compact. There is a tiny hold on the back which is new. I looked at my holiday bronzer from Guerlain and it doesn't have the hole in the bottom.
The bee body is a peach blush, the lower wings are a pink blush, and the upper wing is a pink highlighter. The only overspray is the small flower on the bee's body, the rest is blush and highlighter.
I bought this instead of one of the Chanel bronzers basically because I am steamed up over their aggressive making strategies of "limited edition" which creates panic buying. They also don't offer a light palette with a pink blush which I would find more to my liking.
I also like the Guerlain bronzer shades a little more than Chanel because Chanel pulls orange on me no matter which year I buy it. I too want a cool-toned bronzer for a fair-skinned woman, or as Teresa was dead would say, "uncooked chicken" skin tone 😸.
As for the color shade of the Superbloom, it's not listed anywhere that I can find.
What I expect most comments about the Guerlain Superbloom bronzer will be is that it will be hard to get your blush brush in the blush and highlight shades only without picking up some bronzer. It's not a problem for me as I have quite the arsenal of face brushes that I use to make this work. Overall I love this bronzer and am happy to have passed on the Chanel. AND, it offers both pink and peach blush which I have used as eyeshadow!

I agree with u. I bought the Guerlain Superbloom bronzer last year and it’s so good. The designs r way more beautiful and in my opinion, the colors r more beautiful. I don’t know why the Beauty TH-camrs aren’t talking about this makeup product. Maybe they think it’s an overspray but it isn’t. At least we know which one’s better.

It’s not even close and luxury and it’s baffles me that they have Chanel when they don’t even have the associates that know about the product I’d rather go to my Chanel boutique. I don’t consider Ulta to be luxury. I think if they change their lighting, made their displays more lux hired really great associates made it more luxury and not so Poppy.

We have both within 1-2 miles of each other (1 Sephora, 1 Sephora in Kohls & 1 Ulta). Customer support is much better at our Ulta than Sephora. In fact, as much as I have spent at Sephora, I ended up paying $30 for the 1/2 hour to "find my color match on a specific foundation and the CD bronzer. Our local Ulta is more than happy to help you find a shade match.

@@jhy8191 Actually, I did go back the following day because it was bothering me so much that I witnessed others who were helped. When I asked about it, one very nice you worker told me they do not charge and referred me to the manager. The manager came and asked what had happened and I told her I asked for help to determine my shade in the Westman and Merit stick foundation and the Dior bronzer and was told I needed to schedule for time to get this. I did agree to the $30 FOR 1/2 hour because I just wanted to know and buy. She did apologize and said she would have someone help me with the color choice ...which she did (took less than 5 minutes) BUT never offered to refund me my $30 ... she did check my profile to see if there were any recommendations on it as I was promised and saw there were none and said they had been having problems with their system. I think it was just handled very poorly by the manager. I know shop at Ulta when possible and they are more than helpful in color support. This is our local Sephora and Ulta. Hi, again, Sofia - my personal shopping experience with Ulta has always been worse than at Sephora from a Customer Service perspective. Sephora will never, ever question a consumer. Once I ordered a hair straightener from Ulta and the box came empty.... they would not reimburse me. I get a broken compact from Sephora and without a question... they send a new one. I can give other examples, but in general, Ulta representatives, in store and over the phone, have never treated me as well compared to Sephora.

What I find different about Sephora in Kohl's is it feels more like it's its own entity. In constant to Ulta in Target where it seems like it was just crammed in as an after thought. There's no separate cashier as there is in Sephora in Kohls. Perhaps that plays into its success model.

I feel like I just got schooled!! I started to follow you through my algorithms, and this was my first video full watch. I will definitely continue to watch! I do like Sephora better than Ulta. When Sephora went into JCPenny it was a crappy, unmaintained store. And any good high end products were not carried there..I have not looked at the Kohls location. I tend to order online and live for the 20% off Rouge sale. However, at Ulta, I can always get color match help, and I do think the loyalty program is better as I always have dollars and discounts. They are also carrying more brands like Charlotte Tilbury (but I prefer to order from her directly as I have spent too much and have status). I hope Ulta continues to build more luxury lines. If I want a drug store, I go to a drug store. Anyhow, I loved the video and education. I am 51 and still love makeup!

Great video! I do think the rewards at Ulta are better, for me, the challenge with Ulta is the stores are usually a mess, and if you want the Chanel or Dior, etc, you can’t go into a store and see it. Most of it is online only so you have to see it elsewhere first and it’s a two step process. Just my opinion!

I CANT WAIT for your D&G review video! Have my eyes on this line. I totally agree with all your points on Ulta vs Sephora. I like the idea of changing the grouping of type of products vs each line. Sephora never has help but I do like the opening in Kohl’s which saves a trip to mall. Problem is they don’t stock a lot in those stores. Is convenient but very limited. I’d love to see more exclusives in Ulta which may make me tale a trip there vs looking online.

Let me explain, the store does not offer all products that you would find at a stand alone store and they were short staffed as well. Having said that, I will say that earning double points Sephora/Kohls when you buy from Sephora at kohl’s is a win for me.

I generally shop at Sephora because Ulta doesn't offer as many products that interest me. However, there's another reason why I believe Sephora has much more success. While this reason might not be significant for everyone, it's a deal breaker for me when deciding where to purchase products available at both Ulta and Sephora. The difference lies in their return policies. Currently, Sephora's returns are absolutely effortless and free. I can shop online, and if something doesn't work out, I can initiate the return and schedule a pickup from USPS, all from the comfort of my home. With Ulta, on the other hand, you have to cover return shipping costs or waste time going to their physical location. Shopping at Sephora just feels safer to me since I won't have to waste money or time if something doesn't work for me.

I have a target/Ulta and a Kohl’s/sephora and to be honest they are both the same in regards to experience. I will say even though I’m more of a Sephora customer, I slightly prefer the Ulta in target because they are bright and light and are very front and center. I feel like every Kohl’s has terrible old lighting and mine is just so dim that the Sephora just blends in.
I also did notice the past couple years that Ulta and Sephora are definitely competing when it comes to their sales. It seems like when Ulta has their sales, Sephora starts doing the same sale with the same brands.
I do love the drugstore section of Ulta because it gives you a wider option.

Hi Sofia! I’m just loving the industry discussions. I find it fascinating: I’ve used both Ordinary and NIOD and actually the middle Hylamide line. I used to buy direct from the Deciem site well before any of it was offered in Sephora. I believe I was told at some point that the Ordinary offers tried and true basics and NIOD offers more cutting edge science. I really appreciate both in that it’s backed by research and you can create a customized skin care routine with help from the company or on your own. However, despite all the products working very well, I found that it was a very complex routine with a lot of different bottles to make the same type of skincare regime other brands achieve with just a couple of products. Also you need to be a bit careful about mixing ingredients and you need to do your research to make sure you’re not combining things that don’t work well together. I have moved away from it in recent years because it’s a pain to travel with 10 skincare items you mix together and I didn’t find anything to be super cosmetically elegant:)

I’m not surprised that Ulta is struggling a bit and agree with your suggestions! I think it would be great if they had exclusive items at Ulta. Yes, they are bringing in these new brands but they aren’t highlighting them in the same way as Sephora .The layout of Sephora grabs you immediately with mostly high end or luxury brands that cater to a broad variety of demographics; whereas, you walk into Ulta and you have the same set up besides now they have a beautiful Charlotte Tilbury set up, which they haven’t always had BUT they don’t really have sales personnel promoting them. I do shop at Ulta a lot for things that are duplicated at Sephora, so I can get points and reach whatever their high tier is, which is a little more challenging at Ulta than it is at Sephora. I also get my brows down there too. One thing I noticed that they no longer do or I haven’t seen is brand artist coming in to the store. They used to always have artists from the various brands in the store doing makeovers, thus promoting the. rand and getting bystander attention. Also, speaking of brands when you walk into Ulta, one would think their major brands were EL, Clinique, and Tarte because they have the largest displays. My Ulta has a Hourglass, Fenty, Sol De Janeiro, CT, etc., but you almost stumble around to them because it’s not in your face like in Sephora. Ulta feels more like I’m walking into a department store versus a place to have a beauty experience, or a place I want to stay and play, which Sephora definitely has!
I don’t like the idea of high end and drug store being mixed together. I like them separate for a couple reasons. Reason 1 is just visual organization. I don’t want to be overwhelmed by all the foundation choices. Reason 2, brand depth. If they are only focused on a product from a brand, how do you generate interest in their other products? For example, I might go to CT section looking for a lipstick, then I see she has powder and oh wait, she also has a bronzer. Now if they have focus sections like Sephora on the end caps for things like mascara, foundation, and the brands still have their area, I could see it working; otherwise, just a no from me.
Another area that could help Ulta is improving and highlighting their own Ulta brand. They typically have just ok reviews and are aligned with the drug store section; whereas, Sephora Collection is its own huge section between makeup and skin/body care. It is promoted as am just as good as their retail brands and at a reasonable price point.
Could we make Ulta a place to stay and play? Ulta isn’t a place I spend a lot of time visiting. It’s very transactional. I grab what I need and leave. Sephora has they get lost and visit everything vibe. It’s bright, they have music playing, and I have confidence in most of the beauty folks there but I can’t say that about Ulta. Some of them don’t even look as though they wear makeup.
Lastly, I’ve been to ultas allover the country and they all seem to have an aisle with nothing but junk. Some items are discounted, some are set up to be there, but it makes zero sense and every Ulta has the equivalent to a junk drawer in the store. If it’s going to be sale items, mark it as such BUT find a home for all the stuff.

I use Niod. They have ok products. Once you use high end skincare, everything is in the formulation and advanced actives, specially for (I hate this word…) anti-aging. Niod is at a price range where better ingredients are expected but in my opinion, they lack on the formulation and luxury feel. If they can provide that, then maybe they can compete against Skinceuticals and the likes for example. EL is right to look at that segment (Higher margins, customers who spend a lot on products…)

To me it seems quite random and something I can’t really count on. And it seems like when I do try to use my points, I am not allowed to with Chanel or other lux brands that I want to purchase.

The once beloved TF beauty line has become nothing short of a train wreck since joining the EL stable. I’m just glad I have all the TF items I want/need from when the quality was still great and worth the luxury price tag. I won’t be buying any more TF at the current prices (except if I have to replace my HG Indian Rose lippy, but I already have a backup). Here in Aus only Hermes beauty is more expensive than TF but TF quality just isn’t there anymore. H quads are AUD175, TF quads are AUD156. Chanel quads AUD120.

I am hard pressed to believe that they’d be able to upsell low end consumer but their high end brand buyers would realize that they can get similar quality at far lower price point. I don’t think changing layout is the answer but I do believe they can improve in store experience to better compete with Sephora.

So not surprised with the packaging of the fragrances. Supposedly some pretty famous noses created the fragrances, but still, a pass for me. And Ulta is great for one reason, you can use your loyalty points on Chanel and Dior. Not too often you can get Chanel discounted. But their coupons never apply to prestige or luxury brands so they are worthless to me. And Ulta stores always look sloppy and discount shopping to me. They need to class up.

But I tend to use it more at night, not as great under makeup in the morning because of the oil. Also love the copper peptides from Niod morning and night before moisturizer

I love that Sephora has free shipping on anything! The birthday perk is also better. I lost count of the times I’ve tried to get a birthday perk at my Ulta store and they’re always out of stock.

Hello Sofia, I'm in Canada and noticing Sephora prices are on average 5 to 10 dollars more for lipsticks and eye palettes etc. You can definately get them cheaper ordering them direct from Guerlain or Dior etc. Wondering if it's the same from the US Sephora site?

Hi Shelly! As far as I know, Sephora in the US matches the priced on the luxury beauty websites. There could be another answer out there, but I believe this is accurate. ❤

Nope I am not seeing a markup on Sephora US. I guess the brands are trying to makeup their margins by selling through Sephora.

I don't know what happened - wasn't interested in those Tilbury fragrances either but after watching Charlotte Holdcroft i passed out and ordered bc they are offered as samples right now. I'm just on a bit of a perfume kick and gladly get the Comète with my les beiges order as well. I think i'll review them soon. also Lolaliner inspired me to do fragrance matching looks which sounds like a fun experiment to attach

They are all ones you can get in other pallets. If you don’t have them it’s a great deal but if you have other pallets you don’t need them from hourglass

My big issue with Ulta is while they do carry luxury brands you cannot find them in stores. The Ulta’s near me are terrible. The stores are always a mess, they never have decent brands in store the testers if actually out are a disaster and the staff are usually clueless when I ask questions. Sephora isn’t much better but at least I can find more luxury in the actual store. Since I have to order online anyway I’ve been leaning more to the bigger dept stores or the brand websites.

Ulta rewards program is superior and I like the coupons, however their shipping is absolute trash. Each time I have ordered online the packaging is terrible and products come broken. I tend to shop in store more at Ulta. Sephora’s shipping and same day delivery option is something I personally love and also the more high end feeling and store layout.

I love the NIOD Hydration Vaccine. I use it with the copper peptide formulas and it is really nice and plumping. They give good descriptions. The line has been around for a while - it is not new.

My 14-year-old asked me to buy Hylauronic Acid from The Ordinary!! 😊 This tells me a few things. The youngsters know & understand the brand. Its simple and straightforward and that's what I like about it. NIOD....hmmm, looks like I'd be researching and cross-researching to make sure my actives weren't canceling eachother out. It seems a bit complex for the average consumer. On Sephora vs. Ulta......I am 100% a Sephora girl! Back home in Minnesota we had both Ulta and Sephora, however I've lived in Oregon for 9 years and neither store is near me. I have been to Sephora in JC Penny's in the past and enjoyed the experience because it felt like you were in a separate store! I had an online subscription to Sephora's monthly box for years!! It was a great way to try new products, and the online shopping experience with Sephora is better IMO!! I'm really enjoying your Beauty News!! Thank you!! ❤❤❤

I would settle for hourglass just making their premade palettes with removable pans so we can at least switch them around, e g. put our fave blushes in a 4-pan palette

I do shop at the Sephora in Kohls…but the selection is poor…no Dior for instance. And not restocked timely…empty shelves. So, I’m back to online which I hate for color selection! 😢

I never and refuse to go in Target. IMO Ulta teamed with the wrong company. I tend to shop online only at Sephora because they carry the brands I purchase from and if I do shop it’s only in store at Ulta (stand alone at the mall).

I live in Canada where the ordinary originated. Niod is amazing. High quality for those that know. Pricey but amazing quality. ..I continue to purchase. At their yearly sale. But well worth trying ……not to complex. My theory is if you are going to spend your money. Then take the time to learn ingredients ..well worth the investment.
