    Very handy to watch, I've also got a SH setup that I'll be wiring together over the next week, and this makes it nice and simple to follow. Thanks!

    Good video, you have a far better connection then a terminal block. Heat shrink works well at times, it can be hard to get a size the sealup splices. I like to use liquid electrical tape fully coated followed with regular electrical tape for added abrasion resistance. As for soldering, yes I do it as well. I like to separate the strands in 1/2 on each end, then twist each side together, following with twisting the two half's together. while soldering tricky with heat shrink nearby, need to really heat the wire up more so the solder feeds into the individual strands. With your setup you'll get years of service, far longer then a terminal block. Thanks for the video

    Just installed a NMEA2000 plug and play network on my boat.
    Connected my Simrad GO9XSE to the Yamaha outboard. Just ordered a Simrad RS35 VHF to connect AIS to GO9XSE via NMEA2000 also. All plug and play. No wires to get wrong. No wires to have to solder. NMEA2000 is easiest upgrade a person can do. Why stay old school with soldering NMEA0813 wires?
    NMEA2000 networking looks much more professional and organized.

    I considered using a VHF with GPS to feed GPS data to a Lowrance chartplotter that had a faulty internal GPS., but I am not sure if the speed and baud rate of the GPS's inside these are fast and strong enough to be as good as accuracy as the MFD internal GPS's or obviously an external GPS antenna.

    Very helpful video! Currently in the process of getting all my gadgets talking to each other and this... wiring is somewhat bewildering to the newbie! You make it look bloody easy!
    I'm curious, would you wire an Autohelm onto the same circuit? Would you suggest wiring plugs/sockets on each gadget or simply use blocks, crimps, etc? Cheers!

      i wired it to the autopilot, i think it was different wires. I would have to go over the install directions again. If i were to do it again i would use wire plugs
      tks for watching.

      If you dont already have all the devices you want to network or thinking of replacing old devices with new in near future than the NMEA2000 network is MUCH more better than the old timey nmea0813 network

    Nice Video! Thanks for sharing. (Question)~Will this system also transmit your location to other AIS users?

    • @VagabondEpicurean
      @VagabondEpicurean  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No you will need an AIS transmiter, Standard Horizon is coming out with one in early 2017

    You should have joined the wires using a terminal block and shrink wrap connectors for a neater appearance. Otherwise, good job.

      A terminal block might have made it possible for you to hook up or test the connections so that might be a good idea.

      Do you get your GPS information for the AIS from a seperate GPS Antenna or do you use the build in GPS from the Chart Plotter ?

  • @TOMVUTHEPIMP

    Product information says you need and external AIS receiver for AIS to work. You say it doesnt. Does it not?

    • @VagabondEpicurean
      @VagabondEpicurean  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      only to send your information not to receive, i don;t have an external receiver, just one VHF antenna and i receive AIS. see 8:06 on the video, thanks for watching

    • @TOMVUTHEPIMP
      @TOMVUTHEPIMP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VagabondEpicurean OK, looking into it, the VHF antenna will work with AIS, but its not ideal and performance will suffer. A splitter with a dedicated AIS antenna would be best.

    I have connected my SH VHF GX2200e with my SH CP300 plotter as illustrated in this fine video. Everything works well until approx after 1 hour where the AIS signal disappears from the plotter display (signal still presented on the VHF display). Switching on and off my VHF and plotter have no effect, unless they have been switched off for a longer time. This happens every time I use my VHF/Plotter. Are there any experiences/solutions in this panel, or at least anyone that has the same problem?

      If you are in a mayday situation in UK and you are unsure of your position our coast guard can get your approx location by Direction Finding. Talk to them to confirm procedure. You can't do this on receive.

      You will need an AIS transponder/ transmitter. Without that you only receive AIS signals.
