    A suggestion for a new topic: Your Parker 2120 is now quite mature in terms of systems installs & mods. A 'tour' of all the electronic & electrical systems and the choices you have made in installing them would, I think, be very instructive. I haven't found such a 'tour' on your channel so far, so thought I would suggest it. Thanks for this video, too.

    Hi Capt.... Thank you for this Super-Helpful video! Our last boat had an external GPS antennas mounted high above the flybridge, which did great. I've always wondered how good the reception is with the internal antenna on our Garmin 1040XS in our pilothouse. On occasion I've checked to see how many satellites I receive, but it never occurred to me to check the accuracy 'system/GPS' section of the plotter... I will do so today. By the way, at times, in very tight channels, the Garmin 1040XS has shown me 40+ feet off, up on land! Yes, really!
    Thank you once again!

    Hi Capt... I'm 'reporting back' , as I promised.... Here are the results of our Garmin 1040XS.
    To Start With; It was a clear day. I have no external antenna. The boat was on the boat-lift; not moving/not navigating. I tested it over a 30-40 minute period. The GPS was showing seven satellites the entire time, with VERY strong reception. And, it was consistently showing 7' to 8' accuracy-range. The worst it showed was 9'... BUT, here is the interesting (or crazy? unusual? scary? ) part. Like I said, I was on our boat-lift, on the east side of our canal. The GPS was showing our boat to be in the neighbors yard, over 120' to the west of me! The GPS is 'saying' only a 7' to 8' variance, yet I was shown to be at LEAST 80' away from where it said I was.... If I had been relying on the GPS coming into this 80' - 100' wide channel/canal. I would have ended up with the boat sitting up in my neighbors yard! (They would not like that! ☺)

    • @OutOnTheReef
      @OutOnTheReef  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow cap. Tha scary 😨 but posible that that day the internal antenna was mot working good because those satellites are always moving
      Thanks for reporting and yes 7 to 8 is not bad but check some other time and you will see a huge difference cap.
      Have a awesome day

    Right on Capt. Sweet sled! Thanks for doing this it was exactly the info I was looking for. I have the same MFD as you in my boat. Its installed in a custom console that is mounted overhead with a fiberglass hard top over it. When I'm offshore I keep getting intermittent "satellite signal lost " warnings and the chart plotter will completely stop tracking me. Very frustrating when you cant see land. Again, its an intermittent loss of satellites. It sometimes looses signal for several hours before it regains a connection or signal and starts working again... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and so on.. Seems like the farther offshore I go the more it looses its signal. Weird, I know. I've confirmed the chart plotter is operating on the latest version of software etc .. I've lost trust in the internal antenna so I started exploring options and stumbled across your video here. . I'm thinking I need this external GPS antenna as my display doesn't have a clear view of the sky. Looks like a plug and play installation for the most part. I already have the nmea 2000 network to plug into too. Thanks for the upload I'm going give this a try and hope this works for me!

    Hi Capt... another update; I'm sure I would benefit with an external antenna, like you suggested.... Today I was out on the boat for about 6 hours. The Garmin 1040XS was receiving 12-13 satellites most of the day, and with strong signals. The GPS was showing only 21-22' accuracy. Since that could be in all directions around the boat, it means I could be 42-44' off course of where it was showing me to be. That would be no big deal today as I was mostly in the wide-open waters of the Pungo River and Pamlico Sounds, but coming back into our canal, it would not be reliable at night..... Interestingly, the GPS was showing only 21-22' accuracy, but when doing so, it WAS showing me in the center of the canal as I was coming in....
