I quit driving when I retired and gave my almost new completely paid for car to my son who is just starting a career. I am so happy to stop the car expense on ins and gas. I live close enough to town to ride my bike. I can use my my husbands car on weekends.
This is the time to shop around. I had Farmers Insurance, rates almost doubled. So I shopped and found State Farm was about 30% less. Look at Berkshire's last monthly insurance. Geico reported near record underwriting profit on top of the billions they make on the "float".
There is a lot of fat to be cut somewhere. The max I have ever paid in Europe is $1200 - a year - for a Mercedes E class. Now I have a new, more basic car, it's $300 a year.
I am self employed and contribute to both a SEP and a solo 401k. The SEP contribution is limited to something like 20% of your NET income after all your business expenses. The solo 401k limit is the same as if you are employed by a company, $30,500 in 2024 if you are over 50. But the great thing is that you can contribute to BOTH the SEP and the solo 401k, so the combined contribution can be substantial.
My insurance has NEVER gone down unless I take the initiative to shop around. I do what I can to keep my costs low - price check at each renewal, buy 1 yr in advance, have the highest deductible offered, etc. I don’t compromise on liability, though. It’s always 500/250 minimum to protect my assets.
On January 1, 2025, minimum auto liability requirements for California motorists will increase from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15 ($30,000 for bodily injury or death per person, $60,000 for bodily injury or death per accident, $15,000 for property damage per accident).
I was in a minor accident where the other driver was at fault on the police report and the damage estimate is over 4000. When they told me they I was shocked. I have the insurance company app on my phone that rates my driving and I get nice discounts for that
This is bullshit the insurance company is going base your driving on a credit score, so if you do not have credit cards or not in debt you going to pay more.
If your car is older butva keeper, paid off, you can try in your state, to just get liability. I have a high deductible, and took a drivers course. That goes for 3 yrs. Erie, does not take driver course as a discount. Progressive wants you to put a gps in your car. It tells you if you can drive here and there. Some people are disabled but iwn their vehicle. Where i live, there are no buses. Electric bike is out (to costly) on fixed income. Can't walk far. So just like medicare, prescription drug plans coming up soon, prices will jump 170% . The dept of motor vehicle rose their registration fees from 135 to 161 for 2 yr registration. If your vehicle weighs more it goes up even more. I know in my neck of woods thousands will be driving around with No Car ins or Suv! Get a deductible thay is like 1500. And don't drive after 7pm when its dark out. Car is older than 20, get historic tags. But you can onky drive certain days and for shows. Ins on these cars is low. Soon, maybe sooner than we think, America will be stuck at home, paying super high taxes, and bills. This ain't never happened before. Its just gonna get worse.
I put the insurance companies app on my phone, while I drive they monitor my speed, etc. My insurance cost went down $54.00 per quarter. They just take the money off my next payment. Real easy. The agent installed the app on my phone and started it up, took her five minutes,
Be careful with that. My friend did this and the first year they lowered her premium, but the next year they raised it so much she ended up switching to another company. Companies are in it for profit, not to make our lives easier.

My buddy lives north of Tampa Florida. He did exactly what you described, sold his car and totally got out of the auto thing. He told me he lives a block from the mall and other stores, he bought an ebike. Flys all over the country too see relatives, grand kids, etc. Rents a car when traveling if needed.

I sold my car and take a cab. It works out for me.

I thought that was against the law for insurance companies to check your credit.

How do I lower my motorcycle insurance? It’s $75 a year! 😮
I still have a one year polices. Pay once a year. But, I due drive a older cars.

mine just went up another $20 per month..i’m calling them to raise my deductible..and after i pay off my car i’m canceling my collision to save more.
Legal extortion. Period.
My auto insurance has been going up every year since I don't know when! I use to have low deductibles in years past and it was affordable, now days NO.
I want to switch to pay per mile, but install a sus app and plug something into your car. Just get rid of the entire car indeed.
You have to roll the dice on low liability.
Cancel roadside assistance. Use to be free if used. Now it is a claim. Buy roadside assistance from others AMAC or AAA.

Is the $$$ he’s paying directly to the rental company for insurance, since he travels all over, still cheaper than using his personal car insurance?
One thing raising rates is the number of illegals driving cars and having no insurance.
These no fault insurance states are ridiculous.
Florida has entered the room.
The best way is to move to a large Northeastern city sell your car and take mass transit. Best decision EVER.
Definitely not a money-saving tactic
