  • The Dalton Gang, brothers Bob, Grat and Emmet along with Dick Broadwell and Bill Powers wanted to do what no one had ever done before - rob two banks at the same time. After hiding out on Onion Creek, west of Coffeyville, they rode into town heading east on Eighth Street early on the morning of October 5, 1892. The Dalton brothers, being former residents of Coffeyville, wore disguises. They were pretending to be federal marshals who often came to town, the gang had planned to tie their horses between the two banks, but because Eighth Street was torn up, they tied them in the alley close to the jail. That was their first mistake. listen to this exciting account of how the Dalton Gang was wiped out by the good citizens of Coffeyville Kansas

This has to be one of the most incredible moments of the "Old West," and getting a firsthand account from one of the very brave men who shut it down is a real treat.

The marshal and townspeople shooting into the bank indiscriminately was so irresponsible

Nice. haven't thought about Coffeyville since the late 70s and early 80s. there was a game that had the Coffeyville raid as one of the scenarios. It never went well for Daltons.

A few years ago, I was thinking of buying the hardware store in my (kansas) town, and went to Coffeyville to discuss it with some attorneys. Their office was in the building on the right side corner, next to the hardware store.
After our discussions, I went next door, just to check the place out, totally forgot about the Dalton raid. The owner gave me a tour of the place. All kinds of interesting things there, one being the very first elevator in Kansas! Drawers made from the boxes and pallets that their goods were shipped in. Serious olde time hardware store.
He took me downstairs and showed me where people were at, shooting out of the basement windows. Fun tour!

read somewhere that Bill Doolin held the getaway horses but was never implicated in the robbery and that the “uncovered” money from previous robberies was what Emmet used to start his real estate business in California !!!

i love how people talk about this being in the way way back times. people like that are still here and kansas. there are drug and gun runners. there are bank robbers galore. there are people going town to town putting whole resturaunt staff in the walkin while they rob the place. there are shootouts and retaliation killings even in my small kansas town. there are fewer people in kansas so less regulation. less oversite for everything. i went to twin cities last month and the first place my group wanted to go out of the thousands of local resturaunts. they choose a dodge city themed sportsbar. like we literally just drove ten hours to leave small town kansas, and you pick a small town kansas theme first chance you get lol. not hating of course i love this state, and am grateful there are more people in brooklyn then all of kansas. they tried to lock everything down here during covid, like they did in nyc or la, and it was so laughable. vast majority of people just said no we are not going to do any of that. there was nothing anyone could do about it, because we live geographically and populationally in the middle of nowhere

No scouting the town, no external watch, splitting forces, just all-in devil may care. Probably would have worked 10 years earlier.
