  • LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST presented by Black Barrel Media. On October 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang attempted one of the most daring robberies in the history of the West. Armed with Winchester rifles, they tried to rob two banks at the same time in broad daylight in Coffeyville, Kansas. The result was a running gun battle with the townsfolk that has become legend. Special guest discussion with Bob Boze Bell, Executive Editor of True West Magazine.

My grandmother's brother, Edward Pardon was a young boy in school that day in Coffeyville. He told me that he and other boy's han into town & watched them pick up the bodies.
When I was six years old, 1941, we drove from Middletown Oh to visit him & he took me to see the bullet holes in the bank on the point. He was a barber & had a shop to the south & across the street. I am now 87 but that is how I remember it. We went to the cemetery. Emmett is buried 2 or 3 plots to the left of my great grandfather. Maj. William Pardon 9th I'll. inf.

Grew up in Coffeyville that was where i called home. It never gets old hearing the story of the Dalton Gang. We got to learn a lot about them in school and took many field trips to the museum it was great time.

Except for the delay in identifying the gang--
a livery man identified them as they rode into town--
This was a very fine presentation.
The Coffeyville folks were an exceptional bunch of
    shooters.

I live about 30 miles from Coffeyville Kansas and what’s amazing about the story is there’s no way that people today could’ve done what the town people of Coffeyville did back then you got to think they had absolutely no communications and they took the outlaws down. There’s no way people today could do that.

Coffeyville Journal editor David S. Elliott watched as the whole thing unfolded right before his eyes. He took detailed notes from his perspective. Immediately following he interviewed several citizens that he knew was involved to get the first hand account from what they saw. He compiled the whole story in book form called The Last Raid of the Daltons. You can find it on Ebay sometimes, or at the Dalton Defender and Coffeyville History Museum there in Coffeyville. If you have a Facebook account, you can contact the Museum via their Facebook page. Or you can contact the chamber of commerce to see if you can order a copy of the book for yourself. You can compile that with Emmett Dalton's book, and get a basic idea of what all happened.
