Is PTH still Canada’s best-kept secret? They need more attention. More gold star tracks to check out: Drumhead Trial, Turn Soonest To The Sea, Cold Water, Bone Marrow, Moonlight
The Alliteration Rody (vocalist) does with the letter H at the beginning of the song is amazing. "Hapless hills of Hollywood hide half hearted happiness, a hardened heroine hangs her head. Hear her hyperventilate, here her hands had hammered home" thats honestly some bars. 🤣
I know this is 2 years late... But the final words of the verse: "her half-written history" also just tie it all back to the album's main theme: historical revisionism. Truly genius.
From The Sky and All Hands are killer songs from Palimpsest. In fact the whole album is incredible in my opinion. Other noteworthy tracks to check out Bloodmeat, Mist, Blindfold Aside, The Divine Suicide of K, Turn Soonest to the sea, Sequoia Throne, Limb from Limb
@@TheBunkhouseStudios it is a very cool album. PTH are masters of having each album sound different, while still all sounding undeniably PTH. Volition is the point, in my opinion, where their production started to really reach top quality. Skies, Mist, Plato's Tripartite etc. Off of Volition are all well-loved tracks by PTH fans because of how they each demonstrate their different sides of their style and production.
Yeah a lot of singers, especially rock/metal singers that use more distortion or screaming in their vocals end up having problems where they need surgery. His voice is awesome! Was really impressed overall by the track. Planning to check out more - any advice on where's best to start? Newer or older stuff?
@@TheBunkhouseStudios If you want to see where they came from and get a picture of the contrast, I'd check out Heretics and Killers. For something in between, try Dunsel and Cest la vie

I would honestly recommend checking out all of their albums in order of release. Scurrilous is my favorite album. But that album takes some time to see what's great about it. Most of their other albums are pretty accessible for the genre.
I would agree I used to have trouble listening to Scurrilous for some odd reason but then I just listened to it it’s a amazing album and now my favorite
Random question, sir, but are you from Cornwall? I don't claim expertise on English dialects, but my ears hear that region in your annunciation :) BTW, Protest The Hero has great production in general, and their groove/prog style really benefits. Rody's vocals are also great in the mix!
Protest the hero is excellent. I don’t know how I feel about the Sonics, really a lot of compression but I mean it’s the sound of the genre really. PLEASE CHECKOUT TOOL ANEMA THE WHILE PRODUCTION ON TOOLS ALBUMS IS EXCELENT ALSO ONE Of the best mixing engineers I’ve heard influence an album is Radiohead, especially their “king of lambs” he pioneered many excellent magician like mixing techniques.
yep I know what you mean about the sound, it's definitely a mix/production style that fits this genre. I'm a fan but I also like plenty of stuff with more dynamics going on. Yeah Tool is a good one to check out, I am familiar but not super familiar with their work. Everything from In Rainbows onwards with Radiohead is pretty incredible in terms of production, mixing, recording and mastering. Just stellar all round.
@@TheBunkhouseStudios you should really check out Tool, you’ll pretty much get instant traffic lol like “mix reaction video” they get a lot of views just saying
Love PTH, great reaction. Agree 100% with you on the bass tone, it's not my taste. Especially in comparison to the old bassist who one of my favorites in the genre.
Yep, although I though the bass tone change in the breakdown type section later in the song was pretty killer! Just would like it to sit at the back of the mix less throughout the rest of the song.
I love this record, but the somewhat glassy-sounding cymbals bug me a bit. I think it could also do with a bit more energy in the lower treble, but neither are critical issues and detract very little from the overall quality of the record. I think _Fortress_ is probably the best-produced and all-around most creative and well-written record in their catalog.
Yeah I think the mastering plays a part in the overall tonal balance too. I'll have to check out Fortress, I've mostly been listening to this album so far!
Did you really listen to the song on TH-cam though? Not exactly the best way with all the compression going on... which you should know as a sound engineer. EDIT: Nevermind, you mention it too in the video. Would be better to buy the flac on bandcamp for a dollar for songs like these...
honestly, as an engineer, if I couldn't critique/analyse a mix through a compressed youtube stream then i'd be worried haha! totally agree!
There's another (clever?) layer because the song is all about Peg Entwistle who tragically killed herself by jumping off the H in the Hollywoord sign.
