Probably my very favorite watch. Magnificently sublime, it's perfect for me. In terms of strap or metal bracelet, I like both but steel is my personal preference.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Beautiful watch, as it has been for a long time. And what a gorgeous bracelet, compliments the watch in both style and finishing! (cool bracelet system, as well)
In short, it is a great piece, IWC is an incredible brand, I really like that the new version comes with a steel bracelet, it gives it a more casual and slightly sporty look but the adjustment mechanism of the steel bracelet does not please me at all, it fits to mention that the display window of the incredible mechanism of the IWC is something with which I also do not agree I do not like that my watch is a Christmas tree, the blue hands contrast perfectly with the dial color looks exquisite, the size of 41mm is very well balanced it dresses well on the wrist, it is a push and pull but my choice is the version with a leather strap.
@@WatchAdvisor On the subject of steel bracelet in terms of adjustment I would choose a convesional one but it is from IWC which demands better quality in design to be honest in this particular watch I would have liked to see a Rolex style system (Oyster / Bracelet) I mean links Screwed in that way it gives me the feeling of more solidity, I reiterate it is a great piece IWC is a great reference in Horology its designs are magnificent sober and classic by the way the one you showed from your collection (IWC 2001) is a very nice watch I love it with the golden hands, they give it a more classic style, they remind me of the designs of the golden years. Again : I'm only speaking fir myself . Thanks for the space !!
Dear Alexander, great video as always. Especially I love your explanations on each detail. IWC is great and a classic! I would be interested in your thoughts on Laco Frankfurt. Kind regards and continue with your work please!
@@WatchAdvisor The bracelet looks great, I'm sure it's high quality and many will like it but for me, I would have it on a nice leather strap, may be ostrich leather in a very dark / midnight blue colour. I think your watch on the strap suits the shape of the watch so much better. IWC make lovely watches, irecently looked at the IWC Mark xviii Le Petit Prince
Thanks for the nice video! From a marketing point of view I feel that it was high time for IWC to use an in-house movement! The size (mainly thickness) is borderline for my taste but aesthetically the watch is a beauty!
great video. In the IWC Portugieser chronograph I had always great interest because of the asthedic design and the size. The show stopper for me was so far that it didn‘t contained an inhouse movement. Thus I was happy about the new serie and bought the watch in July in a blue dial with leather strap. I use it as „sportive dress watch“ and it looks just awsome. I just wonder if the steel bracelet works on that watch. The integration in the case is in terms of design very interesting. But does it fit to the classic Portugieser Chrono dial? Has it an own characteristic or is it like putting Porsche rims on a BMW car. The similarity of the bracelet to PP is given. So, for me the question remains if the beauty of the IWC portugieser chrono design wins with the steel bracelet or rather makes it weaker. With white dial I think it is weaker. ...but with a blue dial this could be the opposite and this is my expextation. If so, would your advice to buy it additional now or will it also later available?
IWC sells this type of bracelet for years now and it is everything, but NOT a copy of the patek Philippe bracelet... Does it fit to the chronograph? That's a question of personal taste I would say...
Excellent presentation as usual Alexander. I like the *Green* Or *Red* dial models. Very nice :-) Funny thing, I would never thought you would be a watch collector ;-).
Lovely watch. I myself prefer the blued hands dial but like the leather strap better. I bought an IWC Watch also in 2001 and after a few years changed the butter fly bracelet to a leather strap. The Davinci model I bought had the option of strap or bracelet but bought the watch with the bracelet because it is cheaper to buy a bracelet when one buys the watch than as a stand alone item later. The watch you showed the 2020 mode is obviously a better watch in materials. I have visited IWC many times in Schaffhausen and if one want the hands changing it is just a few hours waiting and one has the hands changed for a small charge
I dont know why we use chronograph watch in daily life, except to tell the time? How often we use it specifically? But, honestly this watch is good looking chronograph watch.
awesome how there's feedback when you press the release button for the links. that's great machining right there. bracelet is a bit flashy but nice too i like it.
Nice review, I agree, you can’t improve on perfection but I love the new blue hands. Also thanks for explaining the ‘wobble’. I have the 7753 movement in my Speedmaster Racing and always wondered what caused it! I found it strange to begin with, but I love it....makes my watch feel alive because it has a heartbeat
A beautiful watch incredibly well presented, thank you for sharing. My personal opinion is it’s better worn on a strap though I do like the design of the bracelet, few do them better than IWC. However the end links would put me off to buying on bracelet, in the video and pictures they appear too large and without any polished elements a bit of a jarring transition to the bracelet proper. Huge IWC fan and owner but this I’ll have to see at my AD in person. Ciao.
Thanks 🙏🏻 for your feedback! In fact you have to try the watch on your wrist to know more... I would not wear it with a bracelet, but with a matching nylon/tissue strap with pin buckle... I love the simplicity and like to play with colors... once you’ve done it share your thoughts with us...
What about the past issue with this movement that it would lock up when the chronograph seconds hand passed the minutes hand Has that been corrected. Can they repair the older watches, so that it does not happen?
you're not correct telling nothing has changed on the face of the new model. IWC changed their logo slightly lately, specifically font face on the "schaffhausen" word, they are not using roman font face anymore. If you look close enough you will also see it's a little bit smaller, hence the width of the "schaffhausen" word is different. Also, if you compare the digits they are using slightly different font too. Look closely at 2, 3, 4, 12. You could also argue about the dot size for each minute, they seem a bit bigger now (maybe it's just a color that seems that way), or the letter spacing in word "chronograph" (tighter now?). Other than that, they are pretty much identical, which was intentional, that's correct. For coparisson, have a look at 4:10 it's clearly visible there. Great video btw.
Thanks for your feedback! Interesting read! Of course there are very, very marginal differences in between the two... already caused by/resulting due to the more modern and much better production quality of dials, hands, cases, ... today. All you mention is almost not visible at first sight and only then visible if you highlight every detail as you did. Once again that’s marginal and the Portugieser chronograph is almost identical to the “old” one. And this is what IWC wanted to do... never change a winning team/design ... IMHO, there is no real use to split hairs over a few details therefore...
@@WatchAdvisor I agree! I didn't want to be picky ;) but I remember it because I saw it somewhere else on different video review. It rally is hard to spot, only if you know about them. Once again, thank you for the video, really great material!

Hi Alexander. Thank you for your video. Your watch seemed more elegant. Not sure if it is the optics of the case against the strap versus the bracelet. Is the new movement taller versus the ETA? The thoughtfulness in your presentation was outstanding as usual.
Thanks for your positive feedback! I am happy to read this... The 69355 has the same size as the 7750... This was mandatory if IWC wants to replace the 7750 step by step in all its existing collections...
@@WatchAdvisor yes, I always liked this Portuguese chrono and I owned one until a few years ago. Now I am considering getting it again with the steel bracelet and the new movement.
I’ve seen this watch in person and was seriously considering it. I went elsewhere because the very clean and simple dial design struck me as a bit bland and generic. Instead, I got a JLC. But it’s definitely a nice watch.

@@WatchAdvisor sure, but sometimes it can be too much when it spinns around all the rime. the b01 from breitling is much more quite, no whobling-effect
I prefer the new bracelet and I really like the blue hands! I agree, however, that it is easier to quickly read the watch, if the chronograph hands are of a different color. Plus, I also think that 3 bar is really not a lot, I would even be afraid to wash my hands with it. Nice review, very balanced and impressive comparison to your „old“ watch!
I love this watch, now even better with bracelet although it looks great on strap too, I wonder if the 30m WR good enough to rinse the watch under the tap?
@@WatchAdvisor The Bracelet is good. It does compare to the cartier santos bracelet because both of them have facsimile adjustment styles. What would have been the icing on the top would be microadjusts like the Glashutte bracelets or formex in the lower end of the spectrum
Lovely and informative video! Was considering between the portugieser chronograph or the automatic 7 days, both lovely pieces but i ended up with the 7 days =).
I love the convenience of wearing a bracelet and this is a handsome one. However, your watch on the leather strap with the gold numerals looks so damn expensive compared to the sporty aesthetic of the new one
It looks great on all the options but if I was going to buy one, I'd probably go for the new stainless bracelet. One can always change out to a leather later. Beautiful watch, you're lucky to have one Alex.
I didn't know that there is another watch nerd beside me. I do have a Breitling Navitimer from 2001. It looks similar as your IWC. Congrats for your care , you must be a very good man. Your collection is over 3 digits? Tell me?
I must admit that IWC's water resistance is very poor. That is why I am waiting for the new Aquatimer in 42mm in 2000 version and the new Ingeneer ... Thank you for always displaying extraordinary watches
Love the review👍👍 love the detials and comparison. I'm now torn between this, and the new 40mm portugieser, I felt that the detials of the new in-house has more decoration and detials on the 40mm comparing to this. But then again, this is such an icon, like my speedmaster 😅 keep up the great reviews 👍
Thanks for the positive feedback! This Portugieser chronograph is of course comparable to the Speedmaster... Both are icon watches and their design will probably never change...
@@WatchAdvisor any chance on doing a review of the 40mm portugieser? Hands itching to get a new watch... i currently owned a Pilot Chronograph le petit prince, so, thought of genting something from the portugieser range. Its either a 40mm as daily wearer or something more blink like this chronograph or the 7 days 🤔
@@jamiea1911 You mean to remove the butterfly strap or just to open the clasp. The butterfly clasp is very tight, normally I would use a little force to undo the longer strap side, then the shorter strap clasp. It's very tight when new, maybe in the future it would be looser. I have not changed the SS bracelet, as the price is SGD $2,400. With SGD $3600, I could get another Tudor 1826 or Tudor Royal. Hope this helps.
But then just get a dive watch, right?...it's really just a dress watch, so unless you are attending dinner parties at 40m underwater, it should survive the handwashing in the pisser...
The best you can do? Put both, one after the other, on your wrist and then let your heart decide... I am sure that there is that little difference why you prefer one more than the other... Try to decide emotional and don’t try to find any rational arguments...
Like you, I’ve been a fan of the Portugieser since 2001... The sizes of the letterings are larger on the new dial... Personally, the Nautilus-ish is bracelet isn’t attractive...although the easily ajustable link design is neat!
sutats +1 I agree, it looks too sporty for the design. I's really an afterthought. The sportier Portuguese should be left at the Yacht Club models. These classic 3716 should remain on straps. But then again, it's just my opinion. To each their own.
With regards to the Fish crown, I read theories that some Swiss body ruled that they couldn't use the logo because it was too similar to the Jesus fish. And to answer your question, I think the switch happened in the late 2000's in about 2006-2008.
I hear/read this for the very first time and I can't believe it... It was a decision taken bey Georges Kern and his team to use the Probus Scafusia instead...
Never had an IWC in my hands, but what I have heard so far IWC produce great watches... Unfortunately I prefer roman over arabic numerals🤷🏼♂️ What brand would you compare to IWC with respect to quality?✌🏻
Alexander , I am so close to buy one in a tax free zone with 20% off . Tell me to send away the guilt , it is so beautiful in life!!! Thank you, Alex. The second question it is a Pelaton movement?
Alexander ,today I was at the IWC boutique and after sorting out all the existent models I opted for portugieser yacht club white with the new bracelet. The classic was seamingly too small for my wrist 20 cm. I am not fat though. My wife gave the final cut. I am now with the shell shock!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the review! Could you please write out in German the expression you used for the look of the dial at 19:02 I love the way some concepts can be expressed in German that cannot be said in any other language :)
@@WatchAdvisor Thank you! Would you only use that term when discussing a watch dial like this one that is uncluttered and very easy to read? Or is it a more general purpose term for the general appearance of any watch dial? I mean could you use that term when discussing a cluttered dial like a Rolex Daytona? I wonder if the term is similar to the Chinese "feng shui" which is also doesn't quite have a one-to-one equivalent in English?
this one has always been on my list but the ETA movement did not justify the price for me. Owning a Valjoux 7750 powered watch I know there is absolutely nothing wrong with it though. But now with the in house movement I just had to put in an option on a white dial with gold hands version (like your 3714). Great review! Helped certainly drawing me back into the Portugieser Chronograph.
Neither Patek Philippe, nor IWC designed this type of bracelet. It is a design that both manufactures started to use after Gerald Genta designed watches for them…
Bracelet doesn't look integrated at all, almost thought someone took a bracelet from another watch with same lug width and placed it on the IWC, should have left the watch on leather strap only
@@WatchAdvisor Mostly I don't like the very first(to the case) link. It looks like peace of soap. The good example for great looking modern bracelet will be Grand Seiko. But my personal preference go to Milanese strap or MOST likely the bracelet from some vintage Vacheron's that looks like fish scale. I saw this kind of bracelet on some vintage Piaget too. i.postimg.cc/8CwsRvp9/Screenshot-20210606-171253.jpg
It's not really sporty if the water resistance is that low. The power reserve is also really low. They have a lot of space to get those numbers to standard sports watch numbers, it's 13 thick. Could they not find skilled watchmakers? This is definitely not a "utility" watch. The dial is nice tho.

Great watch, great presentation - I heard that the calibre 69355 is very noisy..like heuers 02 movement. is this true?
What your hear is the sound of the winding rotor... Is it noisy? For me it is music!
Thanks for your feedback and sharing your thoughts with us!
The steel bracelet looks great with the blue hands.
Now imagine changing it and wearing the Portugieser with a matching blue textile strap... Again another watch... This design icon is so versatile...
@@WatchAdvisor You are correct. I can go casual or wear a suit. I am farsighted, so the blue hands are easy to see.
@@Gristow3 The readability of the time is excellent due to huge dial and good contrast... versatile, as I just wrote above...
@@WatchAdvisor Thank you
I love this watch, now even better with bracelet although it looks great on strap too, I wonder if the 30m WR good enough to rinse the watch under the tap?
Rinse under the tab yes... swimming, shower, jumping in the pool NO!
If you look at IWC webpage they say that 30m on their watches is enough for swimming, so rinsing should be no problem
Nice video, alexander
Thank you! What is your opinion of the new bracelet?
@@WatchAdvisor The Bracelet is good. It does compare to the cartier santos bracelet because both of them have facsimile adjustment styles. What would have been the icing on the top would be microadjusts like the Glashutte bracelets or formex in the lower end of the spectrum
Lovely and informative video! Was considering between the portugieser chronograph or the automatic 7 days, both lovely pieces but i ended up with the 7 days =).
All Portugieser simply look gorgeous... one of my absolute favorite watch line ...
I love that white dial and blue hands, on a leather strap!
I would wear it on a tissue strap...
WatchAdvisor Me too, Alexander. Lol! Hope you are well!
@@WatchAdvisor What is a tissue strap?
Triode 12 tissue = fabric = textile
@@WatchAdvisor Thank you!
I love the convenience of wearing a bracelet and this is a handsome one. However, your watch on the leather strap with the gold numerals looks so damn expensive compared to the sporty aesthetic of the new one
It is still the same watch in a steel case...
It looks great on all the options but if I was going to buy one, I'd probably go for the new stainless bracelet. One can always change out to a leather later. Beautiful watch, you're lucky to have one Alex.
I am not a huge fan of bracelets... If possible I wear my watches with straps... tissue, rubber, canvas, NATO, leather...
I didn't know that there is another watch nerd beside me. I do have a Breitling Navitimer from 2001. It looks similar as your IWC. Congrats for your care , you must be a very good man. Your collection is over 3 digits? Tell me?
I collect watches since I am 18... so I do have some of course... Be sure we are Mot alone ... Many here collect, sell & buy...
Wow nice IWC 😁 a little bit big but it is more a sporty look than dress watch... it could be a killer a leather bracelet. ☺
It is a killer also on a leather and tissue strap and it will do well with the new steel bracelet... the chronograph simply is cool....
I must admit that IWC's water resistance is very poor.
That is why I am waiting for the new Aquatimer in 42mm in 2000 version and the new Ingeneer ...
Thank you for always displaying extraordinary watches
The 30 meters are ok for a normal daily use, expect swimming, taking a shower or jumping into a pool...
Well done.
Nice video mate.
Thank you very much! Let me be curious: would your wear the Portugieser with the new bracelet?
In love with this watch! what is the weight with this stainless steel bracelet?
The watch is light an comfortable to wear... I didn’t weigh it though...
Thanks for sharing your video, I have the aligator strap with blue dial, might change to the steel bracelet once the aligator strap is wornout.
Thanks for sharing your passion with us! Please keep us posted!
Hi @tonyyong, how do you undo the clasp on the alligator strap?
@@jamiea1911 You mean to remove the butterfly strap or just to open the clasp. The butterfly clasp is very tight, normally I would use a little force to undo the longer strap side, then the shorter strap clasp. It's very tight when new, maybe in the future it would be looser. I have not changed the SS bracelet, as the price is SGD $2,400. With SGD $3600, I could get another Tudor 1826 or Tudor Royal. Hope this helps.
The best bracelet I have ever owned was a bead bracelet from IWC.
For me it was always looking to massive... like a chain or something comparable... For sure top notch quality, but not everyones taste...
Beautiful 😍😍
There is nothing I could add... 😉
IWC has some great looking watches! They need 6 bar and micro adjust to sell me on this though.
60 meters/6bar would of course be better… no doubt…
But then just get a dive watch, right?...it's really just a dress watch, so unless you are attending dinner parties at 40m underwater, it should survive the handwashing in the pisser...
great video as always, thanks a lot! how about a review of the IW380802
INGENIEUR CHRONOGRAPH?
Not sure if I can do this... I’ll try... But we will anyhow soon hear more about the Ingenieur since IWC wants to reposition the watch...
I really like the IWC Spitfire Plannning to get one due this travel restrictions I cant .
Where are you based and where do you normally buy your watches?
@@WatchAdvisor I live in Denmark . I travel to usa or singapore its cheaper. I loves watches and I really like your review to the max.
I think what would look absolutely amazing would be the IW371604 with the stainless steel bracelet.
If you are into bracelets, yes for sure…
I can’t decide between this or the new 40mm with the sub seconds only. Both lovely.
The best you can do? Put both, one after the other, on your wrist and then let your heart decide... I am sure that there is that little difference why you prefer one more than the other... Try to decide emotional and don’t try to find any rational arguments...
@@WatchAdvisor thank you sir! Very sound advise indeed. You should produce a video about building a 3 watch collection soon 😉
Like you, I’ve been a fan of the Portugieser since 2001...
The sizes of the letterings are larger on the new
dial...
Personally, the Nautilus-ish is bracelet isn’t attractive...although the easily ajustable link design is neat!
The bracelet was overdue ... There is a clear trend for watches with bracelet...
Great watch! Not sure about the bracelet though. I prefer it on a leather strap...
I would wear it with a nice tissue strap... but there is Lear demand for watches with bracelets...
That bracelet looks like it should belong on another watch. It aesthetics don't harmonise with the case.
sutats Tastes are different! I can’t share what you wrote...
sutats +1 I agree, it looks too sporty for the design. I's really an afterthought. The sportier Portuguese should be left at the Yacht Club models. These classic 3716 should remain on straps.
But then again, it's just my opinion. To each their own.
The bracelet gives it a more versatile look. It was too dressy with the leather strap. Very beautiful watch.
Thanks for sharing!
@4:30 Also ich sehe da einige Unterschiede bei der neuen wie z.B.: IWC größer, Schaffhausen kleiner, andere Schriftart bei den Stundenindixes, etc.
Na dann...
Do you happen to know if the gold hands are gold or gold plated ?
Gold plated
@@WatchAdvisor thank you sir !
@@WatchAdvisor They charging enough for that watch to make it real gold!
Does Jesus have a trademark on that?
Never had an IWC in my hands, but what I have heard so far IWC produce great watches... Unfortunately I prefer roman over arabic numerals🤷🏼♂️ What brand would you compare to IWC with respect to quality?✌🏻
Breitling Navitimer and Chronomat
Jaeger-LeCoultre...
WatchAdvisor Wow so above Omega and Rolex..
love it
Me too! 😉
1:33 is the moment I realized, without a doubt, that this guy is 1000000000000% German. 😀
Whatever happened there… no idea… But, I am Austrian! Never mind!
very nice watch, just excellent. Single fish on the crown of the older model is better though.
The new chronograph calibre is a real update, the fish on the crown could have stayed ...😉
Alexander , I am so close to buy one in a tax free zone with 20% off . Tell me to send away the guilt , it is so beautiful in life!!! Thank you, Alex. The second question it is a Pelaton movement?
Please find some more technical details about the Portugieser in the description of the video… Go for it! You will not regret your decision…
@@WatchAdvisor that was what I was waiting to hear. If You love very likely I will too
Alexander ,today I was at the IWC boutique and after sorting out all the existent models I opted for portugieser yacht club white with the new bracelet.
The word you are looking for is: Die Zifferblattschau ... If you know how to translate that to English please let me know...
@@AndyPanda9 An English term for "Zifferblattschau" is dial opening... so every watch has its particular dial opening ...
@@AndyPanda9 number plate show! ziffer -number blatt-plate and schau-show the look of it
this one has always been on my list but the ETA movement did not justify the price for me. Owning a Valjoux 7750 powered watch I know there is absolutely nothing wrong with it though. But now with the in house movement I just had to put in an option on a white dial with gold hands version (like your 3714).
Great review! Helped certainly drawing me back into the Portugieser Chronograph.
I am happy to read this! Please let me know if you have any questions...
Gorgeous looking watch.
3 atm is a shame.
I agree! The 30 meters are enough for normal daily life, but no swimming, shower or jumping into a pool...
Wow thats beautiful id still put it on leather strap though.
Me too and/or on a tissue strap matching the colors of the watch...
The bracelet on this IWC looks like PP's Nautilus bracelet, with just one minor difference that it's not an integrated one.
Neither Patek Philippe, nor IWC designed this type of bracelet. It is a design that both manufactures started to use after Gerald Genta designed watches for them…
@@WatchAdvisor yes, i know that, just saying that it looks very much alike.
@@adrianobanak2824 You are a watch history educated person, congratulations!
They are not flashy but practical the inginueir chronograph was best
Thanks for sharing!
Great review but I prefer the looks of the watch with the leather strap, it looks classier with it. The metal strap doesn't do it for me.
There is demand for a steel bracelet, I would not wear it either with it...
My wallet cries watching this im in trouble haha
Go and try it on your wrist... if your wallet cries already now it can’t get worse 😜
Is 3716 Bracelet compatible with 3714?
Yes, should be ... Dimensions and sizes are identical ...
@@WatchAdvisor Is it proven? If yes, can't wait to get one!
IWC is turning into one watch brand...
The Portugieser collection is my favourite one... Unfortunately they killed the cool Ingenieur watches from the early days...
They are coming back
@@WatchAdvisor Same here! So sad coz I'm an engineer! :(
@@robinhort6454 I hope they will!
Bracelet doesn't look integrated at all, almost thought someone took a bracelet from another watch with same lug width and placed it on the IWC, should have left the watch on leather strap only
I can't understand this critic - sorry!
This bracelet completely lacks of individuality, this is the main problem.
The watch can also be worn on a leather and rubber strap… What should be changed with the bracelet in your opinion?
@@WatchAdvisor Mostly I don't like the very first(to the case) link. It looks like peace of soap. The good example for great looking modern bracelet will be Grand Seiko. But my personal preference go to Milanese strap or MOST likely the bracelet from some vintage Vacheron's that looks like fish scale. I saw this kind of bracelet on some vintage Piaget too.

It's not really sporty if the water resistance is that low. The power reserve is also really low. They have a lot of space to get those numbers to standard sports watch numbers, it's 13 thick. Could they not find skilled watchmakers? This is definitely not a "utility" watch. The dial is nice tho.
This chronograph meanwhile is an iconic watch... one of the purest designs... couldn't be better... tastes are different...
Iwc is one of the finest watch manufacturers in the world with elite world class watchmakers, you obviously have no idea what your talking about stick to Walmart watches
@@bdegrds wow, you're comparing it to Walmart watches. You have low standards

A sport bracelet on a 30m watch..why..?
Because people want to buy watches with a bracelet... but I agree the 30 meters are not enough... I mentioned it in the video ...
Steel is best
The steel bracelet gives the watch a complete new look...
So this bracelet has no easylink (like Rolex has for example) for fast adjustment on a hot day? Thats a dealbreaker for me.
You can easily take out a link as I show in the video though...
dont like it on bracelet. makes the design so plain that it could have CK written on the dial.
You must be kidding!!
Still hate the cut numerals at 12 and 6.
What else should they have done?
Portugeser on a metal bracelet is blasphemy. Sorry.
I do agree! But the Asians want it…
