- Small investors using a Reddit forum appear to have driven the stock of the struggling retail chain GameStop up nearly 800% and it's causing some major financial losses for seasoned Wall Street investors. Vladimir Duthiers has the details. CBS News business analyst Jill Schlesinger also joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss.

Hedge funds shouldn't short sell a company into bankruptcy.
The fact they can short more of the stock than exists tells you the market is crooked.
They've been doubling down to make sure that GS fails, even after it reorganized in Dec 2020 and its stocks *should* have gone up. So they get what they deserve here.

The problem with institutional short selling is they make their own future in a lot of cases. Group of hedge fund guys get together and go after the stock of a company and bet it is going down. They then start doing interviews saying the company is probably doing to go under. They themselves are driving the stock in the direction they want it to go. They are the mast market manipulators and now someone has figured out how to hurt them for doing it.
So ironic that the platform is called Robinhood.

We have most likely witnessed a change in the way markets will operate in the future with the market more open and accessible to all. GameStop stock exposed many unfair elements to the supposed "free" US market.
Robinhood forced the stock down from 500 because they wont let people buy it.
There are no experts. never before has a stock price been so guarded with as many buyers buying worldwide. Do you understand how little is needed to create fomo again.
There is also the realisation among institutional investors that social media users working collectively are capable of exposing carefully hidden information and spreading it like wildfire.

I think GME stock will eventually end up where it started. However what hapoens between now and that future point in time is what this is all about. There is a chance both ways.. Be it small or not. Most people got the stocks early and made good choices with it. Such huge profits they must have gotten.

And they’re sharing it might be a start to complain to the fact personal Robinhood users can’t buy yet, all these wall st. Guys can continue to work with the stock 🙄

Hedge funds wanted GameStop to go bankrupt during a pandemic. Retail investors invested equity into GameStop to save them. GameStop could now raise capital, pay off debts, use equity for mergers, etc.
A stock is “worth” what someone is willing to pay for it. What people value something for rarely aligns with the fundamentals of the company.
This right here. That’s what I can’t stand about these “experts” on legacy media when they talk about $GME. Who are they to decide it’s not worth $350 a share? If investors are paying that for each share then company fundamentals are utterly irrelevant. “Company fundamentals” sure weren’t relevant when General Electric was trading at $50-60 a share back in the early 2000s, and then after everybody under the sun touted them their price completely tanked.
The “David Versus Goliath” tropes are laughable...this is the result of big Wall St firms “darkpooling”. ..Barclays, Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs “ Sigma” purchased over 200,000 GameStop shares since last December...this is killing us
Well there's one thing they got wrong. They didn't just short the stock. 113% of it's shares were shorts effectively making the company worthless. Someone saw an opportunity to make money based on that fact alone and there was no active encouragement to buy the stock. All that was done was information was given about the possible outcome and why the person bought it and continued to buy it which is no different then the hedge funds collectively wanting to short the stock considering the amount of capital disposed. At the end of the day they both took a risk.

It's not about money, it's about sending a message. I am a guy of simple taste. I like video games, DLC, movies, and Gasoline. You know what they have in common? They're cheap. I am sorry? There's nothing wrong with shorting the stock? That's the manipulation right there. You borrow other people's stock and sell them all at once in a huge amount, this will pull the price down and make other investors to jump out and take profit. Selling your own stock based on your own decision isn't wrong, but selling other people's stock when the owners still believe in the company is purely manipulation.

Friday is zero to do with shorts. Friday is a 3rd potential gamma squeeze (first was Wednesday two weeks ago, second was last Friday). What happens is 150k open calls expire ITM and are exercised causing MM to buy up 15m shares which is a MASSIVE chunk of the float.
