  • Matt and his family are trekking down to the Outer Banks in the BuiltRight F-150, so naturally we decided to install and outfit the truck with DiamondBack's legendary HD bed cover and our full line of MOLLE Panels. Matt will need every square inch of interior storage on this trip, and will be keeping the family's belongings secure from shifting, locked away and properly out of the elements. This being said, we love working with the guys over at DiamondBack, and truly appreciate their rugged products, so we immediately looked to them for the solution - they were able to hook us up with the HD bed cover, some slick touch-activated LED lights, and the Yakima Skyline system. Thanks guys!
If you want to outfit your truck with the most robust and ready-to-work bed cover too, check out the links below to find everything we used in this video! Tune in next week, we'll be tacking the interior Seat Back MOLLE Panels, reconfiguring our BuiltRight Dash Mount and getting our PowerTank installed in the bed for the sand!

Are two max trax sufficient, or is it best to get four? I like where you mounted them, good choice. One thing I'm thinking about doing differently is on each rear interior side putting a swing out case instead, but need to give that more thought, maybe a swing out case on one side and the extra gas or water tank on the other.

Looks like its now a pain in the ass to fit something thats a little too tall to fit under the cover. Usually theyre a breeze to take on and off thats got weight to it. Or they flip up so you have dull access

I thought of another question, if you will. The new 2024 F150's will offer a "Pro Access" tailgate, which in addition to folding down to open, also has a smaller side to side swinging door section in the center. Assuming the weather seal is just as good, do you see it being a big advantage to be able to open the tailgate side to side to be closer to the bed when the HD bedcover is closed, maybe has something on top that makes it so you cannot open the top? Thanks. You do lose the pullout step, so you get one or the other, the pullout step fold down tailgate or the pro access fold down or side to side swinging door tailgate.

We definitely see advantages of being able to stand right at the end of your truck's bed with the pro access tailgate, especially when using a rigid, 'loadable' cover like the HD. If that cover is closed and can't be opened because of a rooftop tent, ski box, etc, being able to reach in closer towards the front of the bed would be a huge help. Assuming the gaskets, hinges and locking mechanism hold up well, and the trim plastics at the top of the tailgate are not too different than what's on Ford's other tailgates, reliability and operation of a tonneau cover like the HD should remain normal. Diamondback's gaskets are robust enough too that they will hold up against different directions of tailgate operation. Regarding which tailgate option we'd choose - we use the pullout step enough that we would most likely opt for that again, especially versus an option that has more room for 'functional failure'. If our pullout step breaks it's not a huge issue, but if the split tailgate stops closing or sealing, we're not going to be happy campers! We appreciate you asking - happy holidays!

That Diamondback HD is such a beautiful bedcover, and so functional. Love it. A question. Do you know, does it get very hot if it's out in the hot summer sun all day, how hot to the touch, scalding being metal and all black? I really wonder about this. It's the only real concern I have. Thanks.

It's great, such a robust solution - there's nothing else on the market like it! And it gets warm to the touch, but I wouldn't say that it gets scalding hot. No part of operating it was really uncomfortable during peak summer when we had it on the sand all day in OBX. The bed-liner style finish on ours definitely helps, it's nowhere near as hot to the touch as black paint on a vehicle or metal panelling on other covers. The only consideration regarding heat for us was the temperature inside the bed, this thing does seal very well, so be conscious of storing more heat-sensitive items back there during peak sun.

Thanks. Just air it out every so often by opening it in the heat of the summer, even if don't need to access inside the bed regularly, that's my thought. Man I love it. I'm thinking the Ford's new "Pro Access" tailgate with the swinging center door would really help maximize ease of access thru the rear without opening the top, especially if something on top means I can't temporarily access it thru the top. Pretty cool that too.@@BuiltRightInd

I'm in Florida and my Diamondback gets extremely hot. I don't know if scalding is the right word but I wouldn't want to put my palm on it for more than a couple seconds in the summer. It's a huge piece of black metal so its gonna retain some heat. I don't consider it a negative, just answering your question. Absolutely the best bed cover on the market.
