My favorite Musical. Robert Preston was great in this role.

I heard somewhere that when they were making the movie they wanted Frank Sinatra to play the role of Harold Hill. Meredith willson who wrote the music told the studio that if they did not take Robert Preston they could not make the movie.
I really applaud Mr Wilson. I honestly don't think Frank Sinatra would have been as good.

The story varies. Sometimes it's Sinatra that said if Preston didn't get the role, that he wouldn't go see it. @@aminsadeghpour1549

To be honest, it wouldn’t make my top ten and I still find it incredible that it took so many Tony’s in 1958, including best musical, when it was up against West Side Story, which is a masterpiece.

Tell me again why Robert Preston wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for this performance? Smh.

Robert Preston. Good grief. What a force of nature. I remember hearing it said that he did "talk-singing", with the implication that it was cheating, but here he is, belting out the melody with the force of a trombone. Jack Black did this number in a movie, and it was fine, but he didn't have Preston's voice.

I heard somewhere several years ago that when they were casting The music Man they wanted Frank Sinatra to play the role of Harold hill.
Meredith willson who wrote the music said you don't make the movie unless you take Robert Preston.
I honestly applaud Mr Wilson. I don't think Frank Sinatra would have been as good.
Nobody could have pulled off the trouble number better than Robert Preston

Frank Sinatra, LOL? Rex Harrison might have been OK if it weren't for his British accent. But Sinatra is laughable.

Not only did they try to get Sinatra, but the producers tried to get James Cagney, Bing Crosby, and Cary Grant. All of them turned it down pretty much for the same reason - Preston owned the role from playing it on stage, and they wanted him to play it. Grant even said he would not bother to see it if Preston wasn’t in it, which I imagine would have caused something of a scandal at the time

You know, Harold Hill was a con man in it for the money but kids in a band or in some positive activity aren’t getting into trouble.
