Let's face it, the elaborately choreographed synchronized dancing is what carries this number.
One of the legendary musical Numbers
Our family has watched this every 4th of July for decades.
Absolutely marvellous, Robert Preston was a genius
3:41 best part!
For some reason I woke up this morning with this song going through my head, so I had to look up the video
December 19th 1957, The Music Man opens on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. Ah to have been there ! Willson's valentine to his childhood with two perfect songs sung first and then sung again in counter melody. Brilliant.
Just perfect. Can’t put into words how wonderful this is.
A great work of art.
Do you see when they are dancing, and Preston is in the deep, left background, and a shoe hits his face?
I’ve always loved the song but I was kind of waiting for the vignettes to fade away, revealing the two sets to be neighboring one another, and the Buffalo Bills to stroll over to Shirley Jones for the closing verses. _Edit:_ I guess that can’t happen in the context of the film since the place where Harold Hill is staying can’t really be next door to Marion’s home but it’s a movie so it wouldn’t necessarily have to make sense.
For the memory of my mom who sang this when I was sick. ❤
You know, Harold Hill was a con man in it for the money but kids in a band or in some positive activity aren’t getting into trouble.
I prefer 'My White Knight' but this is ok.
How they don't recognize him from the town square singing about Trouble
I just picked up this record at an estate sale
DId you buy any estates?
Other people have done Professor Harold Hill and done well but Robert Preston owns Harold Hill.

I love the lyrics, they're spot on for how I felt. I found him, too, 45 years ago. Shirley makes it perfect, what a voice.
No name brought me here
And I don't give a sht.
I always thought in my heart that Marion was falling in love with Harold but she knew she had to be careful because she knew he was a con man.
Such an underrated musical and song
It's my favorite from this musical
Love this movie. The singing, acting, dancing and music was wonderful.
when she starts harmonizing with the barber shop quartet 3:46, this is what musical theater is made of !
A truly lovely, magical moment in American musical history!
Randy Rainbow brought me here 🇺🇸 Thanks for the music 🙂 🎶🙏🏼 💞
Me too, but I think his version is better and he edits all his own harmonies himself. ❤❤❤
@@sandrafraser7015 I LOVE his whole catalogue. He’s an amazingly beautiful and talented "stable geeneeus” 🎶 🏳️🌈💞🪩🥰
I will be uploading a better quality version of this soon!
Preston was a Hollywood great , they don’t exist anymore.
Will the romance ever return?❤
Perfect
Tell me again why Robert Preston wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for this performance? Smh.
Thank you for sharing this. I think of my grandpa when I hear it. I hope I have many years left to sing it with him.
Shirley Jones describes how she got her first big career break at 20 years-old, when she went to an open audition in NYC that Rogers & Hammerstein held every two weeks. When the audition coordinator heard her sing, he got both Rogers & Hammerstein to come and hear her. Jones stated she wasn't totally sure who Richard Rogers was. They hired her on the spot. First was in the chorus in South Pacific. Then the understudy for the lead in Me & Juliette and then the star of the film version of Oklahoma, all happening in one year. th-cam.com/video/S6E_iJ6v7W0/w-d-xo.html
What is Shirley making in the kitchen
I think fudge, though it's hard to tell.
This version is my favorite over the Broadway version. This one has more heart and more in line with what most women feel.
Shirley is perfect for this and what a great blend of the two songs. Beautiful
I heard somewhere several years ago that when they were casting The music Man they wanted Frank Sinatra to play the role of Harold hill. Meredith willson who wrote the music said you don't make the movie unless you take Robert Preston. I honestly applaud Mr Wilson. I don't think Frank Sinatra would have been as good. Nobody could have pulled off the trouble number better than Robert Preston
Frank Sinatra, LOL? Rex Harrison might have been OK if it weren't for his British accent. But Sinatra is laughable.
Not only did they try to get Sinatra, but the producers tried to get James Cagney, Bing Crosby, and Cary Grant. All of them turned it down pretty much for the same reason - Preston owned the role from playing it on stage, and they wanted him to play it. Grant even said he would not bother to see it if Preston wasn’t in it, which I imagine would have caused something of a scandal at the time
How would you know?
@@petesaria-hf1xh in the DVD it talks about the making of The music Man. Originally the studio wanted Frank Sinatra to play the role of Mr Hill

Monorrieeeeeeeelll
Mono--- DOH!!!
My father used to walk around singing this song. It takes me back to my childhood in the 1960's! Miss ya, Dad!
I bet he did a great job singing it too.
@@wurly164 Well ... 😄
How'd he hit those high notes?....Oh, you meant he sang the "Lida Rose" song.....
Hearing this for the first time makes Storm Front's performance way more impressive than it already was
😏
Robert Preston. Good grief. What a force of nature. I remember hearing it said that he did "talk-singing", with the implication that it was cheating, but here he is, belting out the melody with the force of a trombone. Jack Black did this number in a movie, and it was fine, but he didn't have Preston's voice.
I doubt many, if ANY have quite his voice... :D
He has a gritty melodic bel canto voice !
The very BEST of time’s!🙏💪❤️
My family loves singing this together (we choose an easier key for the ladies)
In the original Broadway show the song here was originally called my white knight. Personally I like this song a lot better.
Thank you so much for posting this. I've searched YT for several years without being able to find this, only the closing version of the song.
I don’t know how this actually helps my baby not to cry anymore, but this video helps he just wants to march with the 76 trombones
Shirley Jones couldn't be better in this role. No one else could be anywhere near as good.
Ronald Howard started as a child star, look at him now.
They wanted Cary Grant or Frank Sinatra to play Prof Harold Hill believe it or not what idiots
Don't waste your time thinking those two wouldn't have kicked the shit out of this role.
The music man would not have been as great without Robert Preston
Meredith Wilson told the producers, according to Shirley Jones, "You do not make this movie unless you use Robert Preston. "
You're the idiot for not seeing their potential to pull the role off in their own distinct way.
That's more like it ROBERT
American musical theater is one of the great achievements of mankind. Oh, and Shirley Jones is smoking buttoned-down hot in this film.
