The reason Mario Gotze downfall is his transfer to Bayern München. Bayern is famous with high workrate and efficient tactics, but if you got injured for only one moment you know you screw it. After disastrous season, he transferred again to Dortmund and battling his injury problem. Ofc he's not in the main line-up in Dortmund. And now he's playing for Frankfurt. Mario Gotze is famous great player with Injury prone trait. Afterall, FIFA game cover curse is real.

Problem was expectation and reality was never on the same level. Even during the 2014 world cup he was just a substitute player. Yet after his goal everyone treated him like the next Messi. He was a good player but nowhere near as good at what people praised him as. And imbracing that false hype didn't help his place. That one goal was the worst that could have happened to him. It elevated him into a position he couldn't handle and he was crushed by it and could never recover to his old form

A very memorable date!
Most important thing is he reached top of the mountain,although for a short time and then fell off. At least he made it to the top,much better than not making it at all. Other players reach the top and stay there for long,while others make it and fall off,while others toil entire career and still never make it.

There are some other interesting players on that world cup winning team, who, although never in the spotlight like Götze, pretty quickly disappeared from world class level football after the tournament. Erik Durm and Kevin Großkreutz, both team mates of Götze at Dortmund under Jürgen Klopp never played for Germany again after 2014. Durm playing at second german tier Kaiserlautern at age 30, while Großkreutz at the same age played in third tier. Also Christoph Kramer, who gathered the most international caps of these three players with 12, would never again play a leading role in international level football. Also Andre Schürrle and Shkodran Mustafi pretty much only declined after the world cup.
All of them were fairly young at the time and but none of them even remotly could reach this level of success again.
But they were all an integral part of this team, even with no appearances at the tournament, and embodied the spirit that lead germany to win the world cup.
