  • Bridgetown Church, a prominent church based in Portland, Oregon, recently published a video on their website announcing a significant change in their approach to digital ministry. In the video, a representative from the church shared that starting March 24th, they will no longer offer a full live stream of their Sunday worship gatherings. This decision marks a notable shift in the church's strategy for engaging with their congregation and the wider community through digital platforms.
The rise of live streaming in churches has been a significant trend, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when lockdowns and social distancing measures prevented in-person gatherings. Many churches, including Bridgetown Church, successfully leveraged live streaming technology to keep their congregations connected and engaged during this challenging time. Live streaming allowed churches to reach their members and even attract new attendees from the comfort of their homes.
However, as restrictions have eased and in-person services have resumed, some churches are reevaluating their commitment to live streaming. Bridgetown Church's decision to discontinue their full live stream is a prime example of this trend. In the video, the church representative explained that while offering a full live stream was essential during the pandemic, it is no longer considered necessary for living out their vision of "in Portland as it is in heaven."
Despite this change, Bridgetown Church will continue to offer the full teaching from every Sunday worship gathering in both video and audio formats on their website and podcast platforms. This move ensures that the church's teachings remain accessible to those who cannot attend in person or prefer to engage with the content at their own convenience.
The church's decision to discontinue live streaming has implications for different segments of their audience. For local attendees who occasionally relied on the live stream when traveling or unable to attend in person, the church encourages them to prioritize gathering in person for Sunday services and participating in midweek community groups. For those who have benefited from the live stream as a supplement to their spiritual growth while attending other churches, Bridgetown Church expresses gratitude and will continue to offer the teaching to support their journey.
However, for groups that have relied on Bridgetown Church's live stream as their primary form of worship, this decision presents a challenge. The church acknowledges the value that their live stream has provided to these communities but encourages them to find a local church community to gather with and live out their faith together.
Bridgetown Church's announcement reflects a broader trend among churches reevaluating their digital strategies post-pandemic. While some churches continue to invest in live streaming and online ministry, others are opting to scale back their digital offerings in favor of emphasizing in-person gatherings and community building.
The long-term impact of Bridgetown Church's decision remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly sparks a conversation about the role of digital ministry in the modern church landscape. As churches navigate the balance between online and in-person engagement, it is clear that the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital tools and platforms, forcing churches to adapt and innovate in unprecedented ways.
As the world continues to evolve and technology advances, churches will need to continually assess how they can effectively leverage digital platforms to support their mission and engage with their congregations and communities. Bridgetown Church's decision to discontinue live streaming may be a sign of a broader shift in priorities, but it also highlights the ongoing challenges and opportunities that churches face in the digital age.

May this church face a reckoning for ways they've atrociously mistreated and manipulated good people in Portland. They are full of sick leaders

What are you referring to? Why would you slander Bridgetown in this way, particularly when such a wise announcement is presented so graciously?

@@chaddonal4331 I have no intention to "slander", only giving truths towards justice they cruelly denied to many in their self delusion and arrogance

@@MarkIverson7 No intention to slander? And yet you demonstrate slander - yet again a second time! You have offered to factual data for which a reasonable person can judge for him/herself. Only scurrilous headlines with no specifics.
People online are listening to rich and gracious pastoral teaching from Tyler Staton in addition to founder John Mark Comer and Bible Scholar Tim Mackie and are deeply blessed! This announcement (which you chose to pounce on) represents their gracious leadership. What you are asserting is not at all on display.
You may have additional info including very real concerns, but why air those here on a public discussion board completely unrelated to the topic? Have you gone to church leaders at BT with your concerns? That is a place to start.

@@JunoHastings-pi5wv Well, for reviews, FB has 111 with an average 4.8 rating (out of 5). Google averages 4.4. Some neighbors don't like the loud music. A few people seem to think there is a disconnect between the leaders on the platform and in person. The vast majority have experienced it as an awesome place to grow and learn about how to follow Jesus. That's been my experience as well, from listening to dozens of online sermons, and visiting (from out of state) a handful of times over the years.

They are waning in influence and relevance. This "church" has bad reputations and getting worse. No wonder

Actually, the reputation of Bridgetown is quite strong nationally. God is greatly using the ministries of Tyler Staton (current pastor - suffering from cancer and still ministering),John Mark Comer (founder), Tim Mackie and others…
And locally - I could hardly find a seat when I visited in the dead of summer, when most churches are empty.
I presume you are a local Portlander. What are your concerns or basis for declaring a bad reputation? Parking issues?
