    Maybe the lack of oil caused the links in the chain to wear more, creating the slack.

    I am replacing the entire timing chain system now. Also doing a water pump. That's "dry start" rattle of the timing chain against the buffer arms and guides. Good job 😁👌 Now you know what your listening to NEXT TIME 😉

    Cloyes kits are the best, I’ve done a few timing chain jobs on these engines with them. Just bought a equinox,and plan on replacing timing and water pump as a precaution 😊😊

    Good video, I appreciated that you took the time to admit the mistake you made on the scanner, and you corrected as you were learning more on the scanner. I am experiencing the ticking sound and my 2010 Equinox just hit 194000 today, so I have started replacing the items I know have been on the vehicle since factory. The belt (not that the belt is causing the tick sound), spark plugs and boots. Now I am getting into the sensors that you were talking about early in the video.

    Those plugs looked pretty good. I don't think I've ever found a bone while working on a car. Nice work on figuring it out, you know that constantly never having oil is the root cause. What are the odds of having another same type vehicle coming in the next day, crazy lucky. Half an hour of driving??? You win the lottery? That's like $20! I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, your customers are extremely fortunate to have you to diagnose and fix their vehicles. Yer a good egg Jonathon. An over worked and underpaid egg, but a good one. Keep doing the right thing and the money will come.

      Low oil is definitely the cause of all of this. I was thinking the same thing about the same car coming in the next day. That's why I took advantage of the situation and got a scope capture. Lol with gas prices I know, but I asked the owner before hand. She said to do what I gotta do 👍

    Dude, the slack on that timming chain is unreal, I bet the guides are trashed, I have seen a little wiggle in a chain but DAMN that's nuts, that it has not jumped timing even a few teeth. I bet you that 99% of that is from the lack of oil condition the other 1% depending on the milage would be normal wear. You know as well as I do that no oil also means they don't check the oil or change it as they should. Good job and love your content and format of showing us the compete job in one video even if it takes weeks to months. Good job!

    • @themechanic6117
      @themechanic6117  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the reason why things weren't destroyed is because we caught it early on. If it were neglected and the owner kept driving it could have been much worse. Lack of oil is definitely the root cause

  • @jodyjr00

    Also there is a little orifice in the intake that needs cleaned out. Just don't make it too big otherwise you will have a intake weried noise. This can fix the same rough idle issue.

    Hey, I have an issue going on with my 2011 malibu ls. Just for some background context, I got the car at 136k & I have around 151k now and I'm close to being able to fix it since our other vehicle is almost done. I have to have the front camshaft sensor unplugged and have it run with the crankshaft atm or else it wont start or keep the engine running. I definitely plan on replacing the timing chain because it's obvious that there's ticking, it's not running perfect, and it should solve the issue for the sensor but after seeing this, I was wondering if you think differently. I just can't seem to find any issues of needing the sensor unplugged to have the car run and my mechanic doesn't feel comfortable doing it either.

    • @themechanic6117
      @themechanic6117  ปีที่แล้ว

      With the problems you have and the miles it sounds like a timing chain problem. Leaving a sensor unplugged is not a solution. How often do you change the oil ?
