    This summer, Ajax are set for another huge turnover of talent, with the likes of André Onana, Ryan Gravenberch, Sébastian Haller and Noussair Mazraoui all leaving the club. With Erik ten Hag also off to take charge at Manchester United, it signals the end of another great side produced by the Amsterdam giants.
    The departing players all have exciting futures ahead of them. However, they should be warned that sometimes the grass is not always greener away from the success and security of Ajax.
    Just take the clubs golden generation of 2019. Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, Hakim Ziyech, Donny van de Beek and Kaspar Dolberg have all left for new adventures, yet have struggled to find stability on the road.
    But why is this? In our latest Football Daily Explained, we break down the problems at Juventus, Manchester United and Barcelona, plus see how Chelsea’s style has struggled to accommodate Ziyech. We then decide whether the players simply had it too good back in Amsterdam!

    Somehow blaming De Ligt, De Jong and Van de Beek for their clubs miss using them and their general miss management seems like a massive stretch 😅

    • @thomasvrielink299
      @thomasvrielink299 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yes and no. You're correct they were misused, but they should've all known they wouldn't be used thesame way and I think all 3 chose the wrong club. At Barca, there was no way De Jong was going to replace Busquets. Barca needed a more attacking midfielder with depth at the time, maybe Van de Beek would've been a good option. Van de Beek himself went to Man Utd when Bruno Fernandes had just established himself in Donny's position with a completely different playstyle. Utd needed (and still needs) midfielders capable of progressing the ball, like De Jong. There was clearly no place for Donny. De Ligt went to Italy, where he knows not all of his strengths will be taken advantage of, as in Italy defenders are only there to defend, whereas De Ligt was capable of more than just that. So all 3 have themselves to blame. Only Ziyech was unfortunate that he got injured, Lampard did so poorly he got the sack, and then Tuchel changed Chelsea's playstyle in a way that doesn't suit him. Ziyech has occasionally shown he can excel when used correctly, but he's not done it enough to convince Tuchel apparently.

      @@thomasvrielink299 I think your right across the board, but I don't agree with the conclusion you draw. First of they were all under 23 when leaving Ajax, so saying that it was all their responsibility to pick the right club feels a bit harsh to me. Especially when Barca and Juve promised De Jong en De Ligt that they were the hiers to Busquets and Chiellini. On top of that Frenkie and Busquets are pretty different players so I won't see why his presence should've stopped Frenkie from moving there. De Ligt was clear in many interviews about his ambition to go to Italy because there he could develop the parts of his game he struggled at. Van de Beeks move was quite surprising to me, and to be honest Donny never had the talent the other 3 big stars of that team had, and needed a tactically elite manager like ETH to flourish. But especially if you're a player like him, a club like Man U only comes by once, so can you blame him for Man United just throwing money at us without know who they signed?

    • @edubrooke2753
      @edubrooke2753 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thomasvrielink299 My point is that yeah they would definitely had a beter tactical fit somewhere else, but outside of the Donny move, all three seemed completely logical at the time. The fact that Barcelona and Juventus fell of feels more like an coincidence than them signing players from that Ajax team.

    Seems really harsh, De Ligt is Juventus' best defender and if he stays future captain. Frenkie de jong was Barcelona's second best player after Messi but has never been used like he was at Ajax or is at the Dutch National team. Ziyech has improved as a footballer at Chelsea but never really settled having played a bunch of positions even fullback, Manchester United is an absolute shitshow so it's not really surprising that Van de Beek has failed there, especially since Fernandes was untouchable and Donny only got 3 minute sub appearances.

      But a necessary thing, sadly. I think he is a good fit, because Xavi knows how to play him. But he is the most sellable asset in that team, besides maybe Pedri. And they do need money. Their pursuit of Lewy could also get another boost, if they sold Frenkie. But I'd actually rather keep De Jong than sell him to finance Lewy, because, yes, Lewy is a generational striker, no doubt, but the defence and order in midfield could fall apart without Frenkie there.
      But as I said, this move might sadly be a necessary one.

    De Ligt: Is still good for Juventus but plays second fiddle to Bonucci and Chiellini despite both of them passed their best.
    De Jong: Was played out of position by Valverde, Setien, Koeman and Xavi plus Busquets is still killing it at CDM.
    Van De Beek: No question failed at Manchester United. Ole and Ralf had no idea how to use him plus Bruno, Pogba and McFred were ahead of him.
    Ziyech: Good player in a wrong system.
    Dolberg: Failed to kick on after his solid first season at Nice.
    These are not bad players but they either play out of position, don't fit the system, joined a wrong club or failure to maintain their form from their Ajax days. I could have included David Neres but he was a one season wonder at Ajax.

    Yeah not a great title choice today boys… the only one of the “starting XI” (even though he definitely didn’t start regularly on that ‘19 team) who left and who doesn’t have the explanation of being criminally mis- or under-used at their new club is Dolberg. I mean that I know of, to be fair we don’t get many OGC Nice games in the States.
    As football fans, we should really be more discerning about which players failed their clubs and which clubs failed their players. I see the same error being made with things like the “Bundesliga tax.” KDB came from the Bundesliga, did City have any tax to pay or was he *utilized correctly* and thus flourished? Conversely, does anyone know what position Sancho plays at United? Havertz or Werner at Chelsea? All three have been moved around, dropped, recalled, because it’s clear that the clubs did not have a solid plan for how those incredibly talented individuals would fit in their squads, even if Tuchel might be on the path to figuring it out at Chelsea and who knows with Ten Haag at United but it can only get better…
    Issues arise when clubs buy players for commercial or other non-sporting related reasons without ensuring that those players can come into the team and play the role that made them so successful. We should start blaming the profligate clubs who buy without a footballing strategy, not the players who get lured in by a big name and big money at the likes of Man U, Chelsea, Juve, Barcelona or Real (as we all would in their shoes).
