Playing Phantasy Star Online (Online) in 2022

- This isn't a tutorial on how to play PSO online in 2022 - plenty of guides exist for that. This is simply my own personal experience with reconnecting with one of my favorite games of my childhood.
There are plenty of options of playing PSO, though some are more costly than others. Gamecube players better snatch up the game now before the price continues to rise, but hey - it's free on PC.

Just a little update: This video says you can't play the Xbox version online, but with XBL about to be revived via Insignia you'll be able to play it online again.
Setting it up is too confusing for a layman
Not many people on it right now. It's not too hard to set up the network. Use their DNS and use a static IP. I had to change the last digit of my IP to make it work. Clearly it's old tech
I'm having a blast on Xbox p!aging but my level 11 pails in comparison to the level 100+
Yes, it was easy to setup and very enjoyable. I assume the servers are small, but the insignia discord helped a lot and I instantly found people to play with. I’m excited to play it for the first time soon!!

Nice video dude! I've never played PSO1 in the past (I'm too young to have known it), I never owned an Xbox so I couldn't play Universe, and PSO2 is blocked in my country... But your video made me want to play this classic. I'm gonna try to find friends to explore this universe with! Thanks!
I think it's so awesome you can actually play crossplay between GameCube, Dreamcast and PC Online on the same server at the same time in Phantasy Star Online.

I also went down the same (long poorly documented) road of playing the GameCube version on a modded Wii U. To anyone else who does this I would highly recommend patching your iso with a bunch of the QoL improvements available like USB keyboard support😬, additional pallets, bug fixes, widescreen support, etc… You can also inject the game into a VC title on the Wii U menu to play it and control it on the GamePad and not have to boot into vWii every time. But you would lose the ability to easily go back & forth from Wii to Wii U since the save file would be saved on the Wii U instead of the SD card.
For the network issues the best options for me was a cheap Wii/Wii U compatible USB Ethernet adapter or to tether to a phone setup with no security and 2.4ghz so I don't have to mess with my main router settings to play.
Running this on Steamdeck and having a ton of fun online. I’m doing GC 1&2plus with Dolphin just be sure to set the option for memory card in slot 1 or else Dolphin corrupts your network info every time you go back to it!
Episode 2 has actually only ever been packaged alongside Episode 1. However, there was a VERSION 2 which was released on Dreamcast.
Oh yeah! I forgot that it randomly gave you a profile and color scheme based on your name... well after a year or so any deviant like me would try to gain the system somehow. I figured out the naming scheme and ingeniously (if I do say so myself) made a chubby little robot that I hacked to use a staff named tERMINAL gAy (had to be spelled that way or it wouldn't work) that was, ofc, pinkal. No lie, I entered a game and one player was cracking up so much just from my name that he died on the boss :).
The DC version was so slow on the uptake that you could set cure to a face button than either lightning or megid (the flash of light that instantly kills) to the same button but with the trigger pulled. If you were fast enough it would target your ally and cast lightning or megid (auto targeting spells that's why the other spells didn't work). Lightning didn't hurt, it would only charge up ones tp meter (the thing that's like limit break)- but it could freeze up robots like all electric spells could- but megid would kill. Not many knew you could PK in PSO. I developed a 'hatred' for bot players and would hit them with lightning in hopes it would freeze them in the middle of battle lol so fun (and why I was so fond of good ole T-gay)
Such a great game its my all time favorite game used to play it on Dreamcast way way back!
i just got my file off of my gamecube memory card,and uploaded it to my steam deck. it's dope people are still playing this.

It’s funny, I owned PSO when it first came out on Dreamcast, but my parents wouldn’t let me play online. I missed out unfortunately, but I was lucky enough to order a Dreampi to take my Dreamcast online and it’s on the way. Won’t be quite the same as playing it online back in the day but I’m looking forward to trying it out.
That keyboard cost well over 150 bucks when it was only released in japan

PSO Episodes I&II are supported by Insignia for the original Xbox. and while getting registered for insignia isn't exactly hassle-free. it's a one and done thing rather than having to fiddle with custom servers and homebrew launchers. so if people want to play PSO on the Xbox that's an avenue to do it
Pso was so good, I wish I had my GameCube with my Network adapter still
@11:00-11:39 it's not really jokes on anyone who decided to go retro it's just really about supply and demand thing. As for the controller, there weren't many MORPGs that came out for Dreamcast but at least you can use that controller on games other than PSO.

I still have the Xbox version. I gave my xbox to my neice, which was a mistake lol. It had everything on it, the xbox live info, my characters, all their gear, hacked mags lol, the whole 9. Oh well.
Thats so unfortunate but join us on Ultima server, :) and bring your friends me and my brother still currently play and there's people from all around the world, im in Texas of United States but there's people from everywhere and its true any PC these days can run it with ease
