King has struggled in his life with alcoholism as well as drug and cigarette addiction and those themes and struggles show up a lot in his work, especially his older work when he was in the thick of it. So that's probably why there were at least a few stories in that collection that have to do with that sort of thing.

Just fyi: Quitter's Inc. and more of King's short stories were featured in the 1985 movie "Cat's Eyes"...it might be an older movie, but it's worth it.

As far as I'm concerned this is his strongest short story collection. You are right that he really shines with the shorter format. The titular Graveyard Shift short has always been my favorite from this collection. I had forgotten how many of these were made into movies. Trucks became Maximum Overdrive, Children of the Corn got adapted and The Lawnmower Man became the biggest turd of a movie ever and had absolutely nothing to do with the source material. Try picking up his novella collection Different Seasons. Three out of those stories were adapted into movies and I think has some of his best story telling of his career.

I just finished this book. I really enjoyed The Mangler and Trucks. Trucks was actually made into a movie called Maximum Overdrive which wasn’t the greatest but was extremely entertaining. It was full on Cocaine King, the whole soundtrack was Ac/Dc an Emilio Estevez killed it by playing the lead. I recommend watching it at least once for anyone that enjoys a little bit of horror with a few cringy laughs.

During this point and Stephen King’s life he was battling substance abuse with alcohol cigarettes and other substances. Also “The Lawn Mower Man” was made into a movie is 1992.
Synopsis:The eccentric Dr. Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) puts mentally disabled landscaper Jobe Smith (Jeff Fahey) on a regimen of experimental pills and computer-simulated training sequences in hopes of augmenting the man's intelligence. In time Jobe becomes noticeably brighter and also begins to fare much better with the opposite sex. But, as he develops psychic powers, he realizes that those around him have taken advantage of his simplicity his whole life, and he plots a bloody revenge.

I think Stephen King actually sued to get his name off of that movie. They kind of just named it after that short story and slapped his name on it so it would have name recognition and more people would see it. I think he won and they had to take his name off of it but by then it had done the job they wanted it to.

You NEED to read Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King! It's a collection of 4 novelllas starting with 1922, which I know you loved. And Big Driver, Fair Extension and A Good Marriage. I read this over a weekend around 1981 or '82 when I was in college and I had a semester with no out-of-class work and a weekend where I didn't have to work. On impulse, I grabbed the book just as the school library was closing that Friday afternoon. I thought i read all of it but years later I picked up the book again and found I hadn't read all the stories! Oh and John McDonald's and Mr. King's opening to the collection should be read; there are no spoilers. ("The shape under the sheet." Brrrr!)

I’m surprised you haven’t read The Stand by Stephen King... It’s always been my favorite. It’s the only one I usually read about every 4 or 5 years. So far it’s been 3 times.. The movies...eh... Anyway, my top Stephen King book, followed by The Shining and IT. I’ve never read the Night Shift, but have seen most of the movies. I’m gonna give it a shot. Enjoyed your video!

I’ve counted 28 books by Stephen King on my bookshelves, all except 11/22/63 were read in the 1990’s! One of the is night shift! I don’t remember it that much but I remember learning the meaning of “night shift” (English is my third language)
You are encouraging me to revisit some of his books now, and maybe pick up quitter’s inc tonight!

I was surprised to hear you dnf'd Mr. Mercedes, not that there's anything wrong with you opinion of it, it just surprised me seeing how you seem to LOVE thrillers. I'm am curious though. Did you quit reading because you didn't actually like the story or did you quit it because you went into it expecting the typical Stephen King experience and didn't get that(I totally understand because it's not horror, but outright thriller)? Would you have dnf'd it if it was an author you'd never read before? I'm an avid SK reader so of course I've read it (and actually loved it....still not saying it's not okay that you didn't). My mom (and a couple of friends) really don't like SK but love thrillers and (reluctantly) read it due to my recommendations. They LOVED it. These people loved the first book but the 2nd and especially the 3rd....not so much because typical SK started creeping in to the story. Anyway.....back to your video.

I remember reading an extract Stephen King said about his books/short stories. He said, I always think, hmm what if... happened. I thought that was an really interesting way to come up with a story.

I just finished Full Throttle by Joe Hill. I think there were 13 short stories, and I only disliked 2 of them. SK co-wrote two of the stories also. The stories really stuck with me afterward and there were a few I really loved.

Your videos inspired me to try out horror/thriller novels for the first time a few months ago, and now I'm currently reading my first Steohen King book, too! 😊💕 I'm reading The Tommyknockers which is one of his more sci-fi novels. I get what you mean about his stories dragging from excessive details 😬

Love this book and your review. Def my favorite short story book by King. "I am the doorway" was great and I loved the Salems Lot stories...there all great!

Some of these you might want to revisit again some day. I read Night Shift when I was younger and didn't like Last Rung On The Ladder or The Woman In The Room and neither resonated with me but now thirty years later they definitely have more meaning than they did in my late teens, early twenties. Lisey's Story was the same way for me. DNF'd when I read it in my twenties but later I absolutely loved it.

Nice to have another Stephen King reading vlog from you! Night Shift was the first short story collection that I reas by King and it was so good! Most of the stories were really good and I enjoyed reading this book :)

The Man in the Black Suit is my favorite Stephen King short story. It is terrifying and it won a prestigious fantasy award. Worth a read.

I’m so jealous of the rainy weather 😭. I’m getting sick of the sun and heat. It doesn’t even remotely feel like Fall yet.

I watched the movie the lawnmower man when I was little and to this day I’m afraid of being chopped up by a lawnmower blade lol and I loved the movie children of the corn. Such a classic.

Rats are actually not scary they are actually my favorite small pet of all time. They are like having a dog and a cat and a bird all wraped up into one personality. Very smart very social and almost ocd with cleaning themselves. 😁

Maximum Overdrive I think is based off of the short story Trucks, and it scared me so much as a kid. 🙈
