A fellow Rose Madder reader thank god they do exist.
Any of his books without movies has me thinking that they were not popular enough to get a movie.
      So mostly not read.

I ended most of my bullying early on when I just Punched a bully in the gut as I was walking by with an upper cut style punch... and those that still did pick on me I ignored or joked along with at my own expense.
So yes I was bullied badly in kindergarten and 1st grade but the bullys learning that they'd be attacked back or at least get a reaction they did not find fun made them focus on others quickly. Plus I think I hung out with the popular crowd in elementary without realizing how popular they were.
Point is the way Carrie and many others handle it; is the wrong approach and can lead to mental snaps.
Bullys are trying to control you for entertainment or to prop themselves so if your boring or don't let them feel superior then why would they pick on you? That was my philosopher and it worked for me.

The bullet for teleken positive in Carrie even ties into other books. Not directly but in that some books you could see Carries story being apart of the back drop.

After reading the shining, I understood why King HATED the movie. The Shining feels so personal to his struggles with addiction and I can see that theme in the book. I feel like Kubrick strips away those layers to Jack and just makes him an evil monster for no reason instead of someone possessed by addiction. Also RIP Shelley Duvall you are an icon 🩷🩷🩷

    • @impertud
      @impertud หลายเดือนก่อน +7

YES! I agree with this so much. I loved The Shining because Jack's descent into that madness was so well done and you could follow and feel his struggle. I understand translating it into movie form can be hard, but when I first watched it and Jack had that evil/unsettling vibe from the beginning, I really didn't like it because that's now how he came across in the book to me. The movie can be enjoyed if you take it as is, but I'll always stand by that as an adaptation it is NOT a good one.

@@billiep1603 i read a quote in a review which was something along the lines of “the book is written by a man who has struggled with alcohol and can feel the evil corrupting him and the movie is directed by a man who grew up with an alcoholic for a farther and can feel the evil in the air” and honestly that changed my prospective on both the book and film

I remember going into the book after having watched the movie and expecting to hate Jack but when I read the book I found myself feeling bad for him. It made the ending much sadder. The movie definitely did Jack dirty. Have you read the sequel that follows his son as an adult?

When you read King's 'On Writing', it is really crazy to think that Carrie was his first book published. The fact that he was a school teacher at the time too. It is so impressive how his first book is a horror classic. It almost makes me sad that we don't get the opportunity to be surprised by the story now since it's part of pop culture.

I really loved ‘Salem’s Lot because I loooove how King can write characters so well! This man wrote characters for a whole TOWN of people and each one felt unique! They seemed like real people instead of copy and paste of each other. I also felt like this book was a metaphor for how ‘big business’ comes in to destroy small towns. We have this wealthy man come in and inhabit the most iconic place of this hometown. Then he basically takes over, killing off the original residences of the town and sucks them dry of their resources. This is reminiscent of how a big business will come in and drive out the people who lived there first to make way for their own gains, and in return sucks the land and people dry.

I love Salem's Lot as an exploration of the theme of the evil in small towns that King likes to go back to a lot in his horror. Just, how we know everyone in town so well and know the cruelty and darkness they're all capable of prior to the vampires descending on them is so good.

I loved hearing your empathy towards Carrie. It’s definitely a big theme that makes the story special to me too. I was bullied a lot in high school and a story like Carrie honestly gave me a lot of revenge fantasies when I was a kid. But now I look at the story with so much empathy and sadness for Carrie. The way you describe it really shows the different levels that story has.

I really dislike Kubrick's adaptation of 'The Shining' because it turns Jack into the villain although he's just mentally so unstable that he becomes an easy victim for the overlook which is the actual villain. Also, what I feel with a lot of King movie adaptations is that they cannot convey the characters in the same sense the books do. What I love about King are his well flushed out characters and really round characters; as you said also they feel very very real and every time I've watched a movie adaptation of his books they do not live up to that. And that's something that especially happened in the shining. Kubrick rid Jack of all his traits and though it is amazing visually, the sense of the story and its characters is somehow lost entirely.
Anyway, loved the video, I am very excited for the next ones! :) Also, this made me want to reread 'Salem's Lot' so badly

I don't think people nesecarly view 'The Shining' as a scary book. It's appreciated for its realistic and compassionate (but not condoning) portrayal of addiction. As someone with family members who have struggled with addiction, this book resonates with me very strongly.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Salem's Lot! I read it over 15 years ago and it still sticks with me and it's still one of my favorite Stephen King books, along with Cell and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

I didn't love The Shining either. That was the last book I read of Stephen King then I felt like I had enough. But hearing your perspective on Carrie makes me want to reread it and I am so excited for this series. You actually inspired me to read the rest of his books as well.

You not loving The Shining, one of my fave King novels, breaks my heart just a tad. Not too much because I get your perspective on the book and because I ADORE you. I like the book better than the movie because of the way Jack is more flushed out and not immediately crazy like in the movie. I agree that the exposition in some parts is just too damn much.

So, Ben Mears lived to be 55 years old. He wasn't 55 at the time of Salem's Lot. He was born in 1948, so yeah was 30ish during the events of Salem's Lot.

One for the Road is two years after 'Salem's Lot, and Jerusalem's Lot is set around the 1850s. Also, King publishing under a secret name had more to do with the rate at which he was finishing books. His publisher was concerned that his fans would be fatigued by too many King books coming out so frequently, so he came up with Richard Bachman.

Well, it could have taken me a lot less time but I've been parceling them out like 4-6 a year. For me, there have only been one or two stinkers in all the books of his I read. I cannot wait to see what you think of The Dark Tower.
