    It will be interesting to see how well the dahlias perform in the newly set up no-dig bed. I grew dahlias for the first time last year and left 7 in my borders, and lifted and stored 4. I have heavy clay soil here in Surrey but it has been very well manured over the years, so just heavily munched them, and was amazed that very single dahlia survived the winter! They are about 3-4 weeks behind my stored and potted dahlias but seem to be doing well due to diligent application of Ferric Sulphate granules which are harmless to all wildlife (except molluscs!)

      Hi Laurel, That's really helpful to know. I am so tempted to leave some in - especially since the bed is all new soil and therefore not clay...Let's see how brave I feel in October! 🤣🌸

    Thank you for a graseat video. I am going to try leaving some dahlias in this year. I won't leavae my precious bought tubers in but m experimentiing with seed grown varieties. I run out of space tdo stote my dahlias with eaver increasing amounts I grow ea ch year. I did leave some seed sown dahliuas in a few years ago, without mulching, and about half of them survived so hoping with mulching and sheeting ( to keep them drier) it will be more successful. Wish me luck :-) x

      Oooh. Good luck! I've never been brave enough to leave them in - we have heavy clay soil and I like to protect them from slugs and snails when they're young...😬

    I love your videos! ...both content and style which always makes me smile but the out take made me laugh out lou😆 I have pinched out some of my dahlias so Ill be sure to do them all following your advice. Also interesting the size you've planted them out, I wasn't sure how big they should be to help resist the ravages of slugs.. And thats interesting that I can use FBB...didnt know that! Thank you!

    Have you yet decided whether to experiment on leaving all or some of the dahlia in your new no dig bed ? I have literally today made a new small no dig portion of an existing border using the classic method that you did and I’m planning to leave it over winter but I could easily adapt it next year to be my dahlia bed . I’d love to see how such an experiment would work if you’re willing to give it a go with some of them at least.

      Hi there, I haven't decided yet. I think I', a little scared but I'm also thinking that If I do lift them, I can put my ranunculus and anemones in there and cover them with a low tunnel to get an earlier harvest. It's all a game of trial and error at this stage but I will definitely post a video. At the moment my dahlias are still in full bloom, despite the rain! 🌸😁

      @@cottoverdi yes it’s a tricky one particularly if you want to use the space for other things.

    Just seen your video nice,you do all the talking and your husband all the hard work poor soul..... I'm only kidding.I have planted about 155 dahlias. Just one question do you lift your tulips or just plant your dahlias on top??

      Thanks Bernard, yes, Richard does the heavy lifting 🤣 I always lift my tulips - they really never come back quite as well the second year. 🌷

    what do you call that style of making plant beds? I mean the style where the soil where you plant is higher than the grounds, instead of leveled or digging deep.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michelle, I think you are referring to raised beds but actually, this bed will be fairly level with the ground around it once the soil has settled and we have laid the path etc. It does look a little like a mound at the moment though! 😜😁
