He never got over telling Buddy that he hoped his plane would crash, after Buddy jokingly told him that he hoped the bus would break down in the cold on their way home on February 3, 1959. Survivor's guilt had to be terrible. Two all time greats. So much talent lost, along with Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Very sad. It was the day the music died. Waylon died on my birthday, February 13, 2002.
Waylon Jennings was one of the replacement musicians when Buddy & Crickets went their separate ways. But Waylon Jennings was a good friend of Buddy Holly.
Waylon was a radio DJ in Lubbock, TX, but at 19 he tried playing the base for Buddy in that Winter Dance Tour, which I always laughed about & he called me crazy. I wasn't crazy enough to ride an old school bus in the winter out here on the northern great plains, but I booked bands & concerts and got driven around in my nice warm 1947 Buick limo with a straight 8 motor that got 4 mpg & 2 mpg at 120 mph. What a way to live which was sure better than an old school bus with no heat & I got a % of the ticket sales, so I made more money than scale for a musician. LOL! I sure miss that crazy Waylon who was a pretty good story teller. Thanks for posting this video for all to enjoy as much as I have.

Buddy Holly was quite The Talent. I was 9 when he was gone. I kept hearing his songs in the radio after he was gone. I liked to hear the songs, but I heard Only Silence after the music ended. I knew there was no more music from Buddy Holly I was nine years old.
@@moncorp1 you know that makes a lot of sense and I never thought of that. The fact that Paul McCartney bought the BH catalogue and gifted it to his Holly's family lends some credibility to that story - the pieces fit.
Paul bought the catalog and made a box set called The Complete Buddy Holly with every record Buddy ever made. He got everything from Norman Petty and Maria Elena Holly to make the 6 record box set. But Maria sued and had the box set pulled. Paul appealed and it was reissued. This was in the 80s. I managed to get a copy. It's no longer available so bootleg copies are the only way to get it. Maria was infuriated because Norman Petty's alternate takes and original songs were on the complete set. Paul gave her nothing and still owns the rights to the catalog. Maria was selfish depriving Buddy's fans. The feud continues even today. When the Buddy Holly Story was made in the 70s starring Gary Busey, Maria insisted that Norman Petty not be mentioned even though he, like it or not, gave Buddy his start. Paul had just bought the rights to Buddy's songs. The original Crickets and Buddy's family panned the movie. Paul made The Real Buddy Holly Story as a documentary and a true account of Buddy's life. Maria has held a grudge all this time for no good reason. Norman Petty was a part of Buddy's life and Paul included Buddy's family and Petty's widow. And so it stands.
Yep Buddy's got it clear winner he had a one in a million voice what great talent in his short life span one can just imagine the hits he would have made had he lived... Wow

Waylon gave up his seat to the Big Bopper. Waylon said in an interview that the Big Bopper was sick and the he asked to Waylon if he could take his place on the airplane. Waylon: Not a week goes by that I don't think about this and the guys.

Fascinating post - thank you! It’s odd, in hindsight, to hear Waylon singing (seemingly) before he had discovered his familiar “earthquake”-baritone 😎❤️! The first version is probably what Waylon sounded like when he filled-in for Buddy for two weeks after the fatal plane-crash 🙂😢. It’s also interesting to hear “Rave On” with the Mexican paired trumpets, a la the Tijuana Brass 😮!
Waylon not only sang with Buddy - he was Buddy’s electric bassist on the fatal ‘59 Winter Tour! From what I understand, the touring continued for another two weeks … with Waylon filling-in for Buddy on lead vocals 😮! Probably sounding very much like the first version, here! 🙂
Waylon gave up his seat on the airplane that night to J.P. Richardson (a.k.a The Big Bopper). Supposedly, after hearing about the seat switch, Buddy Holly told Jennings, "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." In an eerie response that allegedly haunted Jennings until his death in 2002, he jokingly replied, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes."
