Okay so I have a question for you to help me understand...I am looking to shoot a 5mm full metal jacket for hunting and I shoot a 42 lb draw weight in my Mathews Avail and 25 inch draw length... I shoot a 26 inch arrow...I would have a 265 grain arrow and a broad head that weighs 100 grains. That puts most of my weight FOC...I was also looking to add a 50 grain insert in the arrow tip but if I'm already sitting that far forward on my weight I shouldn't add the extra weight up front correct?

I asked pretty much the same question on another video, but I thought this video was more appropriate for the question. I am trying to pick an arrow for my VXR, I have a 30" draw length with arrows cut at 30.25", I'm wanting a 125 grain point and I'm pulling 73 lbs right now, however, I plan to get new strings at some point so hopefully that gets up to more around 75 lbs. I was thinking the Easton Axis at 260 spine or Easton FMJ at 250. Will the 260 spine be stiff enough? Easton's chart had 260 on the softer side for my draw length and weight. Thanks for always being so helpful. I've asked questions multiple times and it's always really cool to hear back.
I am thinking about buying Easton Axis 5mm with 75 gr insert and 100-grain point weight, I have a 25.5-inch draw length and shoot 66-68 pounds, do you think 340 would be right?

Ok, im learning new things daily as I throw myself into bow hunting, I did just get my first bear with a bow 2 weeks ago, I got it with the first bow my wife got for me that we found out it was too small. It's a bear cruzer g2 set at 29" dl where I am a 31 & 1/2 dl, it is set at 55 ponds and used a 400 gold tip with 100g mechanical broadhead, little tough but it worked.. My new bow we just got is the PSE Freak sp, 31" dl set at 68 pounds shooting 340 gold tip with 100g mechanical broadhead, help me out please? Is this a good arrow set up for this bow with my huge DL ?? I am spending good money to have the cams replaced and everything gone through to get the bow to top notch new quality and don't want to be shooting the wrong set-up and damage anything now or later down the road, bow is currently in shop for another week. Thank you soo much for any information
When you said the goldtip bend test is irrelevant but then said that arrows break from bending and snapping in an animal? Wouldn't an arrow with more bend (some gold tips) probably wouldn't snap because they can give more?
Great video and explanation of arrow spine/weight/diameter. I started experimenting with different fletching (4 vane max stealth, blazer etc.) and with a 22 gr. Nocturnal nock this added a lot of weight to the back of my arrow which caused problems with my FOC. I like the added stability of 4 vane configurations for fixed blade broadhead flight but I needed a 50 gr. brass insert to get my FOC out of the single digits. Although my broadhead flight was very good my arrow speed was not. Struggling to find the right combination @ 62LBS. and 28" arrow. I think the Axis is a better choice for me. Thanks again.
I have a Mathews VXR on order at 27inch draw @ 70lbs. I have Easton FMJ 5mm 340 spine with normal hit inserts and 100 grain heads that are cut at 26inch that I have laying around. It looks like according to the chart I should be running 400. So should I buy new arrows? If so for the same setup would you recommend Easton axis 340 with 50 grain brass insert and 100 grain head cut at 27 inches? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the video. I had a question. 65# faktor turbo 29” draw shooting axis 340’s. I want more FOC and kinetic energy for my upcoming elk hunt. Do you have any insight on cutting the shaft shorter, adding a footer to increase strength. Current arrows are cut 29”. Ive got roughly 3” of shaft from the contact point of the rest, forward. I haven't played around with the footers much, but they do help toughen the front end up. You could try putting the 50gr. Brass inserts in your next arrows and cutting them at 28". You'd be right around 460gr.
Pretty good video!! I have had a lot better luck though since i started following Ed Ashby’s 12 step program for arrows and broadheads. Your recommended arrows weights seem quite lite. I get the lite arrows for unknown yardage 3D and things like that but for hunting 60lb or more people are seeing much better results across the board with arrows 500 grains and more. My personal setup 75lb V3 day six 275 spine 150 grain inserts and 150 grain grizzly stick Maasai total arrow weight 658 grain and go through whitetail shoulders and bury into the dirt 6 inches or more. Definitely recommend to heavys. Brandon McDonald has a great video arrows part 3 comparing a 450 grain arrow to a 875 grain and the difference in time to target is litterley almost unmeasurable at 70 yards
Another great video.. I'm shooting 28" carbon express sd badlands 448 grains total weight. I'm not really liking the durability of these arrows. I'm having a hard time figuring out what spine and length arrow I should go with. I'm shooting an elite ritual 30 28dl and 72lb the shop I got the bow from cut my arrows to 28" but another shop said it's too long. He said the arrows should be 26.5 to 27" what are your thoughts?
Trust depends on the spine. Personally I don't like cutting my arrows shorter than the front of thebriser for my hunting set up just because I don't want the blades of my broadhead behind my fingers.
Sorry but the last dozen of FMJ match grade that I bought had HUGE run out. I was really disappointed. I went back to Eaton HEXX and added brass inserts. They have amazing tolerances. Had 0.16 spine range for the dozen from weakest to stiffest.
What is spine at 14:30 :) The easton bloodline's lightweight allows to buy a 240 spine arrow in lets say 30"/31" and load the front and still have a stiff enough arrow without an extremely heavy shaft - so it has other uses than for light drawweight bows. Thanks for all your information :)
My Matthews V3X 29 with 27" draw and 27" arrows loves stiffer spines. I typically shoot at 65LBS but sometimes drop to 60 mods and up to 70 LBS mods. 80% let off. Easton online chat puts me between 300-400 depending on my draw weight. The chat shows me at the 350-400 at 65 but one small change and it shifts to 300-350. I run 300 and I am stacking arrows up to 60 yards. I don't shoot past that. My pro shop feels I am too stiff but. I can change my forward weight from 100 grain to 125 grain with no impact shift. Broadheads depend on the quality of the build. So far seems to be pretty close. I do have some 340 and 400 spine arrows cut the same and honestly the stiffer 300 seem to be more consistent even with 100 or 125 grain broadheads. My point to this is People need to experiment more and not take the charts as exact fit. Find what you're bow likes. I feel if you are on the edge go a bit stiffer.
There are 7000 grains per pound. 437.5gr per oz. if you have a scale that measure down to 0.1 oz increments, you can get within 50-100gr of your total arrow weight. You need a very sensitive scale to get a more accurate reading. You can buy them on amazon. They’re often used for measuring gun powder for reloaders.
each component has it's own weight from manufacture. just add 'em up ! arrows are grains per. inch - marked on shaft - length, times, grains. plus parts = weight ! ->>>>---------------------------> easy peasy :-) when you get components you want to know the specs. if you need a scale - $10 on ebay.

I was thinking spine was measured by hanging a 3lb weight on a shaft that is supported by blocks 28" from each other. The measurement is taken with a dial indicator placed in the center of the support blocks. A 400 spine arrow means the arrow bent .400" when the weight was applied
This is true, not sure about the weight that is used but the principle is the same. It's not how much the arrow flexes when shot from a 70lb bow. So technically he is incorrect in his explanation. A couple manufacturers use a different number system that is not the actual measurement of deflection ( Carbon Express for instance).
Phil Ward however if you go to carbon expresses website it will tell you the actual spine measurement for the model number . Maxima red 350 is a 300 spine arrow .
I used to hunt with XHunters but they kept breaking on game. So done changed to East Axis 5mm. No issues. I have 29" draw with my dang Triax and Vertix and H32 ( yeah that's right I have all three) I have had no broken arrow. It's pretty heavy arrow so the deer don't go very far after I arrowed them I'll tell you what. My overall weight is 486 grains and what not.

I shoot a Mathews Vertix with a 29" drawlengh and shot Axis 400s cut at 28" at 62lbs they seem under spined papertuning not sure if cam puts more energy to the arrow
@@InsideOutPrecision I haven't had top hats moved 400s tear tail left cut at 28 and 340s are cut long at 29.5 they shoot a almost bullet and slight nock low maybe 1/8 nock low I bare shaft papertune and rotate nocks for the best tare before I fletch them
Did you have a look at the Black Eagle Arrows. They measure over the complete arrow. So the .003 most of the time spine better as advertised.When it comes to spine they want you to take a 250 spine for 70 lbs at 30" draw. My choise are the carnivore
I have fmj match grade 340 at 29 draw and 29and half inch arrows a little 2 long arrows but I’m giving them to my dad he’s like 30 inch draw and I’m going to get more at 29 inch arrows
No not at all. If anything it would decrease the stiffness because it adds weight to the end of the arrow. Thay being said, they only weigh like 6 grains, and have negligible effect
If you want to talk about arrows eastern was almost out of business cause Beeman arrows took all of eastern business to the point of bankruptcy. Eastern then bought out Mr. BEEMAN for millions i heard in order to keep the name and business. Thats how eastern stayed in business, and got into carbon arrows. Anybody ever heard of Carbon Express guess who that person was. I think all eastern arrows such except for the axis arrows you get those you bought the best arrow ever made and guess what eastern does not make them the wear the eastern emblem but thats it. Eastern is still stuck on aluminum. Waste of money Hit the target they bend. Thats the true story.
I think they're extremely expensive haha ($299/doz), but they're a very nice shaft. We tuned some up for Cam the other day and they shot great. They aren't the first to make a tapered shaft, but they are the first to make a good tapered shaft. The theory behind it makes sense, but we will see the results this coming season! @@matt41770 we set some up for Cameron Hanes and they tuned just like any other arrow. Tapered shafts have been done before, but never as well as Easton does it. Should be a great arrow

Haha I like American Made things. There's nothing wrong with Gold Tip, we just don't stock their full array of shafts and my boss is on tue Easton advisory board, so I'm more familiar with their products. Sure Gold Tips are the "toughest" when it comes to how f ar they bend before they break, but ive blown the back out of countless more GT Hunters than Easton Axis.

Used to run a Hoyt Pro defiant 30 set up the same with those same arrows. So I believe I might have been running the wrong arrow setup.
You should be fine. A little stiff is better than a little weak. Cut them at 27.5 or 28 next time and they'll be perfect

A 340 spine is perfect for you. I’d suggest pretty much any gold tip.

How do you weight an arrow? Add up manufacturers listed weight or physically weight the arrow?

I miss my Easton game getters and xx75's from 1984.
33" arrow 70 lbs. It seems that easton's chart doesn't even have a recommendation. Stiffer than 250 and I have to look elsewhere?
What’s a grain and how do you measure/weigh it when it is cut. Could you show how to get your total weight of an arrow?

I used to hunt with XHunters but they kept breaking on game. So done changed to East Axis 5mm. No issues. I have 29" draw with my dang Triax and Vertix and H32 ( yeah that's right I have all three) I have had no broken arrow. It's pretty heavy arrow so the deer don't go very far after I arrowed them I'll tell you what. My overall weight is 486 grains and what not.
That's exactly the same weight I shoot and puts the hammer down for sure!!

I shoot a Mathews Vertix with a 29" drawlengh and shot Axis 400s cut at 28" at 62lbs they seem under spined papertuning not sure if cam puts more energy to the arrow
You're right on the cusp of needing 340's, but at only 62 lbs 400's should shoot fine. Have you moved top hats around at all on the bow??
@@InsideOutPrecision I haven't had top hats moved 400s tear tail left cut at 28 and 340s are cut long at 29.5 they shoot a almost bullet and slight nock low maybe 1/8 nock low I bare shaft papertune and rotate nocks for the best tare before I fletch them
Did you have a look at the Black Eagle Arrows. They measure over the complete arrow. So the .003 most of the time spine better as advertised.When it comes to spine they want you to take a 250 spine for 70 lbs at 30" draw. My choise are the carnivore
Yeah back eagle makes a great shaft, we just don't carry them. I shot the x impacts for an outdoor target shaft a couple years ago and liked them

You can, but a 300 would be better. 260 is really stiff at those specs
I have fmj match grade 340 at 29 draw and 29and half inch arrows a little 2 long arrows but I’m giving them to my dad he’s like 30 inch draw and I’m going to get more at 29 inch arrows
You should be building arrows as heavy as possible for best pass-through penetration.
I've blown through all but 1 of the animals I've shot with an arrow between 440 and 500 grains 🤷♂️

No not at all. If anything it would decrease the stiffness because it adds weight to the end of the arrow. Thay being said, they only weigh like 6 grains, and have negligible effect

You mentioned tuning your broad heads if your bow is in tune and your shooting a bullet hole you dont need to do any broad head tuning.
If you want to talk about arrows eastern was almost out of business cause Beeman arrows took all of eastern business to the point of bankruptcy. Eastern then bought out Mr. BEEMAN for millions i heard in order to keep the name and business. Thats how eastern stayed in business, and got into carbon arrows. Anybody ever heard of Carbon Express guess who that person was. I think all eastern arrows such except for the axis arrows you get those you bought the best arrow ever made and guess what eastern does not make them the wear the eastern emblem but thats it. Eastern is still stuck on aluminum. Waste of money
Hit the target they bend. Thats the true story.
Really all depends on the cams on your bow. Hoyts Do Not like lower spined arrows. My Mathews v3 would shoot almost anything accurate.

Thoughts on Easton FMJ Taper 64?
I think they're extremely expensive haha ($299/doz), but they're a very nice shaft. We tuned some up for Cam the other day and they shot great. They aren't the first to make a tapered shaft, but they are the first to make a good tapered shaft. The theory behind it makes sense, but we will see the results this coming season! @@matt41770 we set some up for Cameron Hanes and they tuned just like any other arrow. Tapered shafts have been done before, but never as well as Easton does it. Should be a great arrow

Haha I like American Made things. There's nothing wrong with Gold Tip, we just don't stock their full array of shafts and my boss is on tue Easton advisory board, so I'm more familiar with their products. Sure Gold Tips are the "toughest" when it comes to how f ar they bend before they break, but ive blown the back out of countless more GT Hunters than Easton Axis.
